Also, we should take a close look at eye-nose-mouth placement. 10 out of 14 races in Origins have the same exact order of eyes above nose above mouth. Doesn't anyone think, realistically, that order would be the exact same as humans, when evolving in an entirely separate solar system?
Too much panic over ratio of representation of non-humanoids in the game. It's never about ratio, but about how good is specific alien design, humanoid or not..
Hey, that's fine too! I respect your opinion - I just think the chances of everyone wearing clothes, standing upright, evolving a head with eyes, nose and a mouth, all in relatively the same spot, with arms and hands and legs and feet, are very

Never played SC1. I guess I can't judge, but get your 4x out of my adventure game....
"I would not hype the game up too much."
Right, but that's what YOU would do... and that's fine. But, I vehemently disagree. What a sad day to be aiming for mediocrity. I say, Stardock, aim for the stars. Never, ever stop until you've made an instant classic.
What??? 99% of people played SuperMelee the most? I don't think that's accurate. SuperMelee was very fun, I'll admit, but it doesn't stick out in my mind, or get brought up consistently for being the best game of a bygone era because of its ship combat. http://kotaku.com/the-game-that-won-our-classic-pc-games-list-if-it-ha-1349952997 People remember it for being an adventure game th
I'd like to know something about player ship design. When we get to design our own ships, will there be more primary and secondary attacks to choose from, or can we only choose from the attacks of the super melee races in Origins? As a possible follow up question, will we be able to design our own attacks in-game or through modding?
I believe this is answered in this month's vault. I didn't read all th
This is the July Vault Update, people! Jeez! Not the official Microsoft Word troubleshooting thread. smh
That was a doozy of an update, Brad. Here are some thoughts on this month's vault: I am so very tickled to see that the concept/theory called The Dark Forest is being incorporated so heavily. Like... giddy with excitement. If ever there was a hypothesis about the nature of space to be explored, The Dark Forest Hypothesis is IT. It's so very cynical and delicious! Imagine you're in a forest. You have your camp, and at night...it is very, very dark. You have no clue what's in the
It's not an editor you need, Kavik. You're 50 years old. Haven't you seen the words "to" and "too" used in sentences before? I know, I'm nitpicking, but I can't read a paragraph of that, I just can't. So, most commonly: "Too" means when there's too much of something, or a substitute for "also". "To" most commonly follows a word ending with "-ing" - walking to the store, flying to Paris, talking to your mom. I only say this because, if you're going to<
I disagree with your statement, "There is no game too it, no dynamic too it".
No, it wasn't that... it was actually that "there really is more too it"......
"'Super Melee Passives' could be similar too this" - really, Kavik? REALLY?
Forget that dirty word, scope, it would be an absolute nightmare to balance! Because to truly balance, you need to make 15 ships that can fight against each other and have a chance, right? But then... 15 variations of each ship? You're now looking at 240 ships (including unaltered ships), that have to somehow be balanced against each other. I don't know. The whole things seems like it'd be terrifying to have 240 states of ships that can somehow fight each other in meaningful ways... doesn't a
I really like this idea. I wonder, shouldn't we really stop using the term "scope creep" as founders? What are we, StarDock's CFOs ? We should raise things we believe will make this a better game. Shoot them down more in terms of gameplay rather than game dev planning, which we don't really have the inside insight to know anything about. Brad kept saying SC:O has to succeed, has to be awesome.
Another problem with passives is they go against the uniqueness of the ships. adding more abilities should go with the uniqueness and not against... (if they are going to happen, then definitely I'd take more functional ones over just stats upgrades)
This is a good point, and to be honest, I'm struggling with the idea of passives already. I think it adds yet another layer of balancing that doesn't necessarily NE
@Vol - Stellaris does that. They have multiple MULTIPLE space-born organic entities that travel space only, never planetside. Giant Amoebas bigger than planets that go to different systems to soak up the sun's energy. Sentient crystals floating through space. A giant void dragon in space near a very prosperous planet. Living beings that somehow survive the vacuum of space. Very cool ideas, full of wonder, and would be perfect for Star Control... kinda like the Greegrox.
Stellaris does this, as well, with incredible effect.
I'd like to say that I think adding "+2 damage" based on your fleet's chosen ship, is a mistake. Star Control has never been about numbers. It's been about IDEAS. You never even had a set damage amount for ANY of your weapons (because that's ludicrous, anyway - does the new U.S. fighter jet do 78dmg to enemy armor? Does the M16 now do 376dmg to enemy flesh? Ridiculous. No.) As I've said before 20million times, I don't WANT incremental weapons-upgrades. I don't want to go to a pl
I would think that the danger of "scope creep" is doing a lot of work for little real gain. This is the opposite of that, this is a force multiplier in many ways. It greatly increases the variety of ships in the game and it greatly enhances the immersion of the player. The universe seems incomplete if every species only has one kind of ship. And it is not a ton of work because you are just adding two thematically si
@inferno - I wasn't talking about you - I was referring to the addition of multiple ships per race, from Brad's vault update this month, lol - oops.
How is this not incredibly scope-creep?!
We intend for the game to include multiple ships per race but only 1 in super Melee. In super melee you will be able to add your own ships with ships made by others and play online with others with them (ranked mp will be limited to official ships only).
