The one time I worked for a computer game developer I spent the entire month of December at the end of 3 straight months working alone to turn their empty engine of unrelated parts into a playable game for them in just three months. But I guess you are right, I was alone in the office for most of the month with just one programmer there most of the time just to make me feel like I was not finishing their game for them completely alone while everyone else was on vacation. And, of

The "Star Clusters" are like the "Octants" of the SFU. Places far away from the "Alpha Octant" of the "main game" that Stardock is making. So when you make your own mod "universe" it will actually be said to be just a place in the universe, or this galaxy, far away from where the events of Star Control take place. That is all it is, an explanation for why and where all these different "universes" that players are creating are.

From what I can see from the screenshots the "FTL-style combat" is a group of more simple ships on the screen instead of a single more detailed ship. So, a Fast Patrol Ship "Flotilla SSD" instead of a single ship this time... You'd think somebody would be paying ADB for all this blatant theft of our work... or at least mention that "This is from SFB" like they would it it was from D&D. I guess stealing our work while keeping it a secret where it is coming from ha

They approved mine, too. I went with the comedy choice to match the Star Control theme:-) You know that big planet destroying monster in TOS that Commodore Decker flies into to destroy it? I used the name of the planet that monster had just eaten right before that happened in the SFU that became kind of the comedy planet of the SFU over the years with, I think, almost none of all that comedy stuff ever actually being published anywhere, haha. But we had got the name

All I get is a Login screen, then when I login it is just a Logout button. Nothing else comes up. EDIT: I figured it out, just had to go back again. There was nowhere to leave a comment. If devs want to know the origin of the name I submitted just ask me in a personal message if you are wanting to keep the names secret for now. That name has appeared in several places before and is a ref to a lot of different things. I'm used to bring

Us SFB staff guy's have a bit of experience with this stuff, he... They need to speak as little as possible for us to be useful too them. This same effect existed in the forums that the SFB Staff operated in. There was a time when even I had this effect on some people, but the really big examples are "The Steve's" and Chuck Strong. They are the top guys ever in that world, by a long long way. And they long ago learned to generally only speak publicly in

I guess comparing it to Faster Than Light they mean it is "rogue-like" because it has nothing to do with FTL, haha.

Doesn't the mushroom make you want to know why there are giant skyscraper tall mushrooms on Venus, which should be completely inhospitable? Especially with the kind of half-serious, half-comedy story Star Control II is known for... I had the exact opposite reaction to that picture, I really want to know the story of why Venus is like that...

I actually like the look of the planets, it goes perfectly with that Looney Toons look and feel I am hoping for. Hey... How about an entire race that is reminiscent of Looney Toons... and they have a god that holds a big pencil with an eraser that he.. she... it... uses to rule over its world. Their "God" uses the pencil & eraser like Buggs Bunny did against Daffy Duck. Anything it draws happens in that world, anything it erases ceases to exist in this world. And

I think you could do a great story with the original Star Control races, and that is the safer way to go. But I think it is actually better to make your own races. That gives you much more freedom in what story you can tell. And it really is all about the story we are talking about here. If they create and even better story, with how for off the scale better looking and more immersive this version will be... People won't forget about the Star Control story as

We would know about the planet long before ever visiting it. We woulnd't know what they call it until we met them. Until then, we would use a name like you often see in sci-fi... Sol III, for Earth, for example. It's not that we are ignoring their name for the planet. In that kind of situation, out of respect and not wanting to insult a new people we had met, I would imagine that we would immediately begin using their name for their planet. But until we m

When you are naming fleets of ships you normally come up with specific names for the humans... and then only refer to all alien ships by their "human supplied code names" with just a single name for any ships of that class. You have names of cities, countries, people, etc to name the human fleet. Just try making up 300 nonsense alien ship names for an enemy fleet and see how far you get. This is based on the real world. The "names" you hear for Russian military equipme
HG appear to be good programmers but sure don't know how to design a game.
No offense to anyone at Stardock, because they are among the few in my view that this does not apply too, but... You've just described 90% of their industry absolutely perfectly:-)

You really can't miss the gravity. If you want something visible for gravity, though, I like Hunam's idea for it. Some kind of effect coming off of your ship would actually be pretty cool. That square grid just seems like cluttering the entire screen just to show gravity... which you don't even need to see. Gravity is actually a huge deal in my universe. Most games just ignore it because it is hard to deal with. I long ago decided to us

It's such a hard decision... Kalan (from my universe), Syrinx (the Space Egyptian planet from Rush's 2112 that might have inspired Stargate), Klinshai (name of the Klingon homeworld in SFB)... or Sheboygan III (the "planet of comedy" from SFB from "The Creature That Ate Sheboygan III"). I'm going to have to think about this for a while... :-)

I was just mentioning that it is very easy to handle making it work well with the 1v1 combat they are planning on having. I used to play Subspace where most zones had 32-64 "Star Control-like" ships fighting in the same arena... that's why almost every ship carried 1 "Repel" to fling everything away from you, for when you found yourself with 5 or 6 people all converging on you at once, haha!

It's all about the story telling. If it is a good story, encompassing good "Star Control-like" aliens... then people will love it. Taking it to an extreme if George Lucas wrote it, with his first 3 movie level of storytelling... it would be a smash success, right? Or JMS, my personal sci-fi writing idol... it would be even better! :-) There aren't a lot of people still playing games who would know Star Control. They are a critical audience, becaus
I agree with the OP, that we need DOTS representing the crew. A bar is like a health bar to me. Doesn't feel like I'm losing people. Health bars make me feel like they're okay to be sacrificed and its just a tolerance level and it might regrow if I pick up some health boost.
Maybe then, instead of dots, they should be th

I completely agree with having exploration mode be an angled view. Top down is more than restricting for the artists, it takes away almost everything they can do to make the scene look good. There is no depth perception from a perfectly centered top down view... which is what makes it so much better for the arcade style combat. But in exploration where you don't need to fight, they really do need to take the handcuffs off of the artists and let them work. I'l
