Accolade paid a $15,000 advance plus a royalty schedule to license something from Reiche, when they made Star Control 3. What, exactly, is Stardock claiming was licensed here? I'd consider SC:O's Arilou just as derivative as SC3's Orz were, so it's presumably not just the copyright to the exact visual representation.
Indeed. Reiche represented he owned a lot of things that he did not. What you should ask if did they
@GMOrz: So are you saying that that agreement is live or expired? There is no such thing as Schrödinger's contract. More to the point, and I'm not a lawyer but Addendum 3, 1998, was for a future Star Control game that was never delivered and was not one of the agreements Stardock assumed so I'm not sure what it has to do with us. As Paul and Fred have said, they have no business relationship with Stardock. Fair enough. Then it boils down to what copyrights
Well now that Stardock has recently supposedly "registered" trademarks* for the classic aliens (Chenjesu, Arilou, etc) your theory will no longer apply. P&F's copyrights to the aliens are now at the mercy of those trademarks in question. How convenient. ^__^
They always were, tingkagol . I realize you spend a lot of time listening to the theories of people who have no experience at this who

Fleet Battles: yes. Chapter 1? Not until September.
With Star Control: Origins now less than 60 days from release I thought I’d spend a few minutes writing up a status report on some of the murky legal issues between us and the designers of Star Control II. As many of you know, Stardock acquired the Star Control IP from Atari in 2013. This acquisition didn’t include all of the copyrights to the second game in the DOS trilogy. Notably, it didn’t include the art, source code or music. Stardock was able to team u

Making alien worlds is very fun. But how realistic do they need to be for players to have fun? In Star Control, we've opted for cool over realistic since, in all likelyhood, most planets are either just big rocks, big ice balls, or balls of gas. So having worlds made out of diamonds and rubies and gold and iron and other weird things allows players to cons
Great feedback. The Arilou are not quite what I think most people imagine. They do kind of look like “generic”aliens don’t they? You might even say they look exactly what we’d expect aliens to look like..
Greetings! I am pleased to give you a head's up that for those who have pre-ordered Star Control: Origins that we will be including a host of additional DLC as part of that purchase. https://www.stardock.com/games/starcontrol/store As some of you know, Riku Nuottajavi and Dan Nicholson, the two primary composers from Star Control II, have signed on with us to bring the Star Control II music to Star Co
It's quite a challenge to find that right mixture between what is realistic versus what is fun. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/55_Cancri We have 55 Cancri in the game and it has the exopolanet that NASA discovered. Of course, we can only speculate what that planet is and we do have a red dwarf in that star system as well. One of the more interesting things players will discover is that many (if not most) star s

I have watched this so many times. With our work on Star Control: Origins, we now have an engine that really could create a truly sophisticated battle system like this. I wouldn't want to do this for Star Control since the charm of its battles is that they are fast and and simple. But I bet I'm not the only person who would like to see a modern game that takes all the various systems into account. T

The Arilou Observer was designed to keep an eye on us. It will make its debut in the Fleet Battles beta 3 coming out next week. Its is not generally designed for combat but its primary weapon is a plasma spreader that shoots bolts slowly in every direction. Its secondary weapon is a cloak which allows it to escape detection from curious humans. In the abo

Today's the day for BETA 2. We've tried to incorporate as much of your feedback as possible in the past couple weeks. This post will go over some of the highlights: Start of game introduction The biggest amount of feedback we got was the general abruptness of the start of the game. Beta 2 begins the process of addressing this by adding two new screens after the story intro. <img src="https://cdn.stardock.us/forums/0/0/1/048f8f5f-e
Okay...but...that's not the sense I meant at all. I was really asking about, like, how much we can go off-script story-wise. Not code-scripting but scripting in more of a screenplay sense. Like, how much we can affect the face of the galaxy without having to have chats with aliens to do it?
If you go around and destroy ships it can affect how things go. However, again, only to a limited extent because
Ehhh, I'm not sure the blow them up part is very in-line with Starcon IMO. Asides from selling people as slaves to the Druuge (which you eventually get heavily penalized for), you generally don't do anything like that on a whim. Honestly, I'd change that to be a little more light-hearted than implying genocide for entertainment.
We don't tell you how to play. We simply give you the option.
From an expectations point of view: Your direct actions won't have a massive effect on the galaxy one way or the other. Your actions will affect things a little but not cosmically. You are, after all, just a single ship.
