Morning Weyr...

Morning Diplomats...

Part way through my 2nd game. The Altarians are proving to be 'resistant'.

Need a resistance is futile button in the diplo screen. I see we moved to second place. WOOT.

Why? I've got loads on the main map - it's just that the game insists on calling them "Troop Transports"

Go kick some lily-livered do-gooder butt Moosey!

OK, DG if you're around at all, can you let me know who to contact at Stardock with saved games / smart exception files etc if I can't get this annoying CTD issue fixed tonight. Bottom line is that I had a complete system lockup on Monday whilst playing and had to hit the reset button. Now I seem to be getting random CTDs, and strangest of all... if I go straight to "Load game" from the main menu after launching, the loading screen appears for what seems to be an appropriate length of time then CTDs with no debug or event log entries. Happens with every saved game I've got from either before or after the lockup. If I launch the app, go through the new game setup process so it brings up the main interface, I can then load every saved game happily over and over again. Game was running fine before the lockup, so I'm 100% sure it's down to my PC - but I'm getting nowhere in finding the cause for it and could do with seeing if someone could find some time to have a look for anything obvious.

I've just deleted all traces of the game from everywhere on the PC (registry, SDC etc) and am currently downloading it fresh to see if that can fix it (restoring from an archive in SDC didn't). At a bit of a loss if that doesn't fix it, save for rebuilding the PC... (or hijacking the wife's - but that's not as fast).

How come there are no medals for anyone on this thread ?
We all have medals. At least I can see them.

Game 8 is in. Just about every one surrendered to the Yor during the game. You don't even know how sad I was kicking there butt across the galaxy.

Hi All,

First post! (Althogh I have loitered silently around these forums for some time).

I've been contributing my points to this empire, mainly because it includes names I recognise from GalCiv I, and also because most of my victories are diplomatic, even the ones which say 'conquest', which usually means I switched off the other three victory conditions.

I thought I'd post to say that I'm impressed by those of you who are getting victories on suicidal/gigantic, and to ask a question - I can cope with crippling, but step up to the 200% bonus the AI gets on masochistic-suicidal usually sees me outclassed pretty quickly. My question - if the AI on masochistic-suicidal settings are all 'incredible' (and therefore getting the healthy bonus, at least if i'm reading the manual correctly), what's the diff. between the three most difficult levels?

I'd also be interested to know if those playing (and winning) on suicidal (Magnumanaiac and E-Stab at least..) are getting into aggo with the AIs relatively early? - My problem, I think, is that I'm spending too much of the early game powering up my infrastructure and using diplomacy to avoid conflict - this works out well eventually, but I realise that the defensive ships I do build is missing out on combat experience (hitpoints) meaning that I am always under-military until late in the game when I suddenly pile out a fleet way in advance of what anyone else owns. This is all fine on challenging, but on Suicidal the AI is noticably more aggro, pumps out huge fleets quickly, and I don't have sufficient diplo-tech advantage to be able to prevent them munching me up well before I am ready to overpower them.

Basically, is it possible to win on Suicidal through pure diplomacy, or am I failing because I am not mixing it up with at least one AI from the start?

PS. I think when the metaverse refreshes we should have diplomats in 2, 3rd and 4th place (with me 4th). This won't last, though, as I think I need to go up to Suicidal to have a chance of staying near the top, I think I milked as much score out of my last game as is possible without facing the 200% penalty, and that included the population boost from one of those 'all planets within 2 sectors are PQ 13' events which happened in a torian area of space. I rushed out an armarda of hyperwarp-engined colonisers, and grabbed more than 40 (!!) PQ 13 planets (abundant everything). At the end of the game, I had around 6,500 billion citizens.

i ended up getting a alliance victory on my first MV game. I feel I should have done so much more though...

Yes! The key is fighting wars on your terms, or (a much better option) to have all the AIs fighting wars on your terms while you sit back and watch the fun. If an AI is at war with everyone else but you... they have limited options as to where to send their freighters, and most importantly, who they are going to surrender to when they get creamed.

I have won a suicidal / gigantic / military conquest without ever being in a state of "at war" with anyone! I usually don't build any military at all until medium hulls with Phasors or Harpoons.

Not sure if there is any difference between Maso / Obscene / Suicidal difficulty levels - certainly haven't noticed anything so I just always select suicidal with max opponents.

P.S. Welcome aboard Lurker, nice to see you in our little corner...

No worries Coolrush... That's what I got my first too.

Cheers Moosey - you are a fount of wonderous knowledge!

Total re-install did not fix the issue, so I'm left to the mercy of the Stardock folks which, with Brad's obsession about creating an unforgiving human-destroying Drengin AI, has me a little worried it must be said - if I don't post for a while, please send someone to check the queue for the Drengin furnaces...

Yes, yes, honestly Mr. Wardell, sir, your most honourable majesty, sir... my video card drivers were up to date. What? No, I know it says 1st Jan 2225 and my driver date says 2006, but that really is the latest available and sending me to the furnaces really isn't going to alter the time space continuum enough to make Nvidia jump 219 years into the future....

Welcome all to the Galactic Diplomats

As you are aware the main senate for the Diplomats is made up of the admin for The Galactic Core. However i have extended the numbers of Senators here by one. That position is given to Magnumaniac for being the top points scorer for the empire.

Congratulations Mag

Plus i have launched the new look logo for the empire.

Should anybody require a custom logo for themselves with their inits on (see mine) i am more than happy to do this for you.

DG

OK, I just wrapped up my game 3 for a tidy 113K (thank you very much!). Problem...It wont submit!!!

Is there something going on with the MV right now that is preventing submission?

EDIT: [Side Note] If you'd like to see an example of DG whipping up an avatar, see mine. DG made this one for me for "The Core". (Thanks again DG )

Wow! Thanks DG. I'm already looking over my shoulder though, with e-stab and Lurker joining up I also know that Tech has got the game now, so it's only a matter of time before the machine gets rolling...

Got to take a break this weekend for a stag do, but have a game nicely brewing at the moment - ahough the damned Altarians are being a right royal pain in the butt, and are actually out-teching me still in the 4th year.

Nice one Chip - hope you get it submitted OK

On a side note - I finally tracked down my CTD problem and appear to have fixed it. Turns out it was a corrupt dll from the sound card drivers, which I discovered when I got a BsoD from another app. Game running sweet again now.

Congrats, Senator Magnum!

Don't worry, I won't have much to time play in the next days (exams...), I guess I'll drop out of the first places for the time being.
