I love reading the game examples in the Journals section, but there aren't enough of them! Anyone else have an entertaining story to tell about the AI? I got the game yesterday and fooled around a little at the easy levels, when I get home I should finally be ready for a real game. I just need some nice reading material to distract me from the fact that I can't play right now. (Much the way GalCiv itself will help me stay sane until Oblivi

It'd be nice if there was at least an alternate female portrait for each of the main races (even if there's no telling what females would look like with some of the weirder ones...). The leader of my race, at least, usually has a girl's name, and it's a little strange having to use a guy's picture. I find myself playing as a sentient squirrel pretty often, possibly this is part of the reason why. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/g

I'm glad I decided to browse around through the older journals, great story! If the full version was ever published I'd definitely buy it. From the synopsis alone I can tell they'd be much, *much* better than most of the garbage books that are usually set in game worlds. (I made the mistake of picking up some of the Halo books not too long ago..ugh!)

I've been staying out of this, but I just wanted to point out trhe fact that a debate isn't always a bad thing. Nobody's flaming anybody else, and from what I've read things have stayed surprisingly mature. (mocking someone's opinion while hiding behind cutesy emoticons might come close to crossing the line, but for the most part spite hasn't been part of the equation.) But I do have to wonder if there's any point in continuing this discussion. You've all repeatedly made your points, a

I had one game where I was way up by myself in the corner of the map, with just Sol and two other stars. One was useless, but the one right next to Sol belonged to a minor and I had to research impulse drive immediately so I could get a couple of transports over before their population got to big. That game was actually kind of interesting, because I just concentrated on research and building up my economy; I had a huge amount of money by the time the majors found me, and even though t

I play at the easier levels so I'm not sure how well this would work for you, but you can still get a decent amount from the majors by asking for less for a longer period of time, say 100 for 15 months or so - even though they would outright refuse to give that much in a lump sum. But if you need a lot all at once you have to rely on the minors, assuming they haven't been wiped out by the time you really need the money...lol, in my last game I went broke because the Alexians flipped to me ri

A formulaic approach completely leeches the fun out of anyhing, IMHO. I don't understand why someone would want to get so entrenched in using just one strategy, to the point where even having to make the slightest adjustments to their playing style throws them for a loop and completely "ruins" the game.

It would be intertesting if you could have more options, maybe kind of like the invasion screen where you pick the way you'll be attacking, (traditional warfare, information warfare, etc.) only instead you pick different ways to target morale, economy, military, or improvements (maybe starbases too?). Each method would have its pros and cons. And your espionage ability could not only effect how likely you are to succeed, but how likely other races are to succed against you. (I'm not really clear

I normally grab any resource I can find just to keep the AI away from it, but if they're not next to one of my planets does that mean all the modules (except the cultural ones) are basically useless? For instance, if I install factories or whatever it only effects the sector it's in, not my overall production? That's what I've always assumed, but it'd be great if someone could clear that up for me.

Has luck been changed any since the patch? (I didn't read through this whole thread so I apologize if someone already asked this...) When I first started playing I used it alot but didn't notice it doing anything. Then I used it recently and I got like nine Rangers and an event that gave Sol a PQ of 43.

I'll occasionally take a 14 if I want to spread my influence into somebody else's sectors, but I usually don't bother with them. However, in the last game I played there were no yellows at all in my cluster, so I had no choice to take 13s and 14s. Luckily I'd chosed the +5 PQ as a pick, so most of them ended up as 17s :) I have a question though, does PQ effect your influence, and how much? I seemed to have a lot less this time around and had to give up my plans of cranking u
Or you could just cover that part of the screen with your left hand so you can't read it while you're using your right hand to click the "Random" button
Lol, thanks for the help everyone. I actually tried that (it seemed easier than messing with the text files) but then the Torians came in and crushed me before I even got to Corvettes, so I think I'll stick to adjusting the levels myself for awhile :D [Message Edited]
Yeah yeah yeah yeah. You are so much smarter and better than me, it's just bloody amazing.
I hate to single anyone out like this, but elkabong, I've been reading your posts here and in other threads, and you just strike me as being incredibly negative and belligerent about *everything*. I'm sorry you don't like the changes to the starbases, but does that really justify being rude to everyone? I'm just now starting to play with the AI at sub-normal and normal, a

This isn't really a big deal, but I decided to try out the 'random' feature for a little more challenging game. (I've been scared to move the other races off beginner so far :D) Only I was kind of disappointed to see that it's obvious what each races intelligence is; the little box of text describing them completely gives it away. If I see that the Drengin and Yor are destined to sweep across the galaxy while the Altarians think nose-picking is a form of communication, I end up adjust

Even if you see things like morale or funds dropping, a lot of things can cause that, there's no way to directly tell how much of it is by you. I know the stuff I mentioned would be just for show, but it would still be nice to see the game in some way acknowledge the money you're spending.

I just wish the game would give a little more evidence that all the money I spend on destabilization is actually working. Even if it was just something like an occasional report, ("Our operatives have incited a riot on the Altarian homeworld, blah, blah, blah...") it would add to the feeling of realism.

This may not work with other settings, but as soon I start a game I set any planets I get to building constructers; if I find a yellow star later I just switch Sol to a colony ship. I play with rare/large/loose clusters, so I typically don't need that many colony ships right away anyhow. And I always start with 80% Research and 20% military and go straight for the Impulse Drive before anything else, it helps a lot.

They're like roaches; the trick is to stomp them out as soon as they appear. Otherwise they'll spread so far and so fast you'll never get rid of them. The I-League completely wrecked my game once, now as soon as I get that event I drop everything and rush a bunch of transports over. (though it's nowhere as easy as with the other minors because they seem to start off with such a large population.)

I've always thought that this online card game "Star Chamber" might have stolen some elements from GalCiv, but then again anything in the TBS space genre is going to have so many similarities it's kind of ridiculous to talk about copying.
But, in a recent game, a good and chaotic good AI on close terms would not form an aliance with me because they thought I was barbaric even though I had the white good colors (don't remember my alignment number). Eventually they both decided they could live without me, and proceede to make it happen.
Could it just be that your diplomacy isn't high enough?
