There are reasons to take a low class world. Political - Small planets have small populations that just love you. Many small planets can help you carry an election (when you run the democratic governments). Cultural - Small planets are still your planets. This means they help extend your cultural reach across the galaxy. Useful when you are trying for a Culture win. Military - A simple fuel depot, extending the range your starships can travel. Their are a few diff

Every star, on average, has 5 planets. At the most frequent planet usability, roughly 1 out of 5 of the worlds will be a usable world (it's slightly higher from my small sample testing). So, for a gigantic map at most/most/most settings, you are looking at about 1000 usable planets, before any random events. (Based on CariElf's numbers as reported by Yarlan ). Of course, that's near max amount of stars. On average, it's a fair bit lower, but
Brad has mentioned that they consider, from time to time, making an RTS version of GC. However, I think the current game projects are GC2 and their MMO-RTS called Society (IIRC).
No, you are not. The original colony ship, as well as survey ship, cannot be designed as is, when you start the game. They are carried over from GC1 (You know, your starting colony ship and survey ship). Quirk of the game. A few researchs into the game, and you'll be able to build a better vehicle, so its not a major advantage. Just a small gift from the Frog.
The latest Gamma builds are doing great!
If you do the unhide and list unowned at the start of the game, then the minor planets in the home systems won't be "owned" yet. No-one has had a chance to grab theirs.
Brad... I can always get more missile value out of the same tier and minor revision then I can get out of the other 2 weapons. The space difference between missiles and the others is trivial for all hull sizes. You just cannot get a higher beam or driver for the same amount of space on a hull, due to that doubling of missile strength. Square or half, the difference doesn't actually matter when you are still in the teens. The economic cost of building those lost small ship i
A few checks show that the rate of PQ 0 at max/max/max to be about 85%. I do find the odd PQ 5 to PQ 9 worlds. They do exist, but seem to be a little more rare then PQ 10. And they wouldn't be useless. Not even a PQ 1 world is useless. A PQ 1 world makes a good fuel base (range extender), and helps your approval numbers look better (they are always happy with you, at least in the open betas).
The percentage of 0s, even at the highest habitable planet setting, is fairly high. I haven't recorded actual totals, but my *impression* has been it's somewhere around 50% or higher. I haven't tried the very lastest gamma build as I was busy with paying the bills last night, but I'll generate a few maps tonight at the highest habitable level and take a good look at the maps to try and get a more accurate number to report back on.
I find the weapon split to be completely pointless as it stands. Here's why: Missiles rule all. At least at the lower tech, and I've never played a game where anything past tier 2 weapons were deployed so for. Why do missiles rule? Simple: Each unit of missiles is twice as strong as the other weapon types. But defenses are the same, regardless. Meaning that Missiles pack twice the punch, making them twice as good in all circumstances. What's this lead to? Watch o
You know, as I recall, StarDock actually started taking preorders on a GC1 MP expansion. They stated that if they got enough pre-orders, they'd make it. Less then 100 people pre-ordered the expansion (at the price of $15 or $20, IIRC). With over one hundred twenty five thousand units of the game *sold*, less then 100 people were willing to pre-order an expansion to provide MP. MP is a troll. Most MP vocalists wouldn't use the feature more then a few times, by thier own admission. GC2
Well, I'd be happy with the PQ 0s to not being present at all in the game. If you can never use them, they don't serve a purpose. I personally don't find them adding much to the game. But that's just me. Other people like seeing all those minor dots on their maps. Go figure. There is a real point to the fact that if only useful planets were on the map, then you'd know where to go to find colonizable worlds. I suppose that would el
And yet, in all the polls that Stardock has ran about "would you use MP?" the response has always been less then 10% yes. Indeed, before work began on GC2 or Altarian Prophecy, Brad (Owner of StarDock, and Lead Designer of GC) ran a poll asking if they should make an MP expansion for GC1, the survey results were very small "Yes" (around 10%, IIRC). When GC2's development started another poll was ran on what features should be included in the game, and MP got only about 5% of the votes
All I can say is... THANKS FOR ALL THE HARD WORK! The GalCiv2 team has been doing a great job! And it is being appreciated!
Actually, we aren't talking genocide for a major race, are we? We are talking about the taking of one world. It's just an island colony, after all. For most instances in the game, there will be other colonies of the same species elsewhere, so that isn't a true genocide. It's "genocidal". However, when you cannot economically use something, then it is worth being "genocidal" and doing a small bit of research into eliminating a problem on your planned new conquest. What would be more economical fo
Actually, it would be trivial to wipe out your bio enemies on a planet, all within a week (1 turn), if you had a few "basic" techs. It would just cost you a small cycle of research to create a nano-plague that targetted those beings, spray it on the planet, and then move it. Of course, for an advanced civ, we can presume that the dieing rebels send a sample to the rest of their brethren (or its info break-down via secure comm), so that particular genocide agent could no longer be used. But you j
Isn't that part of what the Drengin did to the Torians?
Who would waste the tileage on "Scan jammers"? Tiles are way to important for something like that.
Hey, I didn't see the council forum listed when I posted this (and my other bug posting). No worries, I'll be posting all future 90x there. But I like Moser's workaround. Thank you, Moser the Alchemist, that will be most useful.
Hmm.... I admit that bothers me a little. I wonder why Stardock is doing it that way. Not being a programmer, I don't understand why opposing fleets couldn't fire simultaneously. Can anyone answer this for me? This is just a matter of giving the attacker a slight advantage. If it was simul, then it would not matter if you attacked or let the ot
Beta 90b Started a new game as Humans. Had listed as available from the start a design I made in an early Human game. This design was a very primitive small hull with starting beam component (2 beam 1 for a total of Beam 2). Problem was, I didn't have access to beam technology yet! The ship had my write up on it, but its picture was empty, and its actual stats was 0/1 hit points. It was also buildable instantly, and the built blank ship was launchable and findable in my ship list and
Well, in my second game tonight (I told it was a rough start. AI ate my lunch, supper, and breakfast ), I got my own home star system again. So, it looks like I was just extra lucky with that start... being able to start off with the Chosen People of Cari.
First game I started under 90b had me, playing the Terrans, start off in the Cari system. Earth was named Cari 1, not earth. The Caris home world was Cari 2 (Mars equivalent). I have a save demonstrating this if need be. If all races get their homeworld systems in thie beta as in previous, then I would guess that when the Minor Cari race spawned, it selected "Mars" (or some other world in the Terran Home System), and renamed the system after the new, more famous occupants. However th
Barbarian tribes are not actual civs/races? Really? Go check how many actual Native American civs are still around, compared to the Europeans coming to the New World. The answer is very, very few. Heck, for the matter, check out how many Arabian tribes are still around. Or African tribes. Or South American. Check out how many were wiped out in acts or wars of genocide. It's a good proportion of the now extinct tribes. The history that has survived to us from such events and wars often
Pardon? What use do they serve? Eye candy is the only thing I've seen so far. It's silly to say the game would look silly without them. Second, random events do not target PQ 0 worlds. They target low PQ worlds. Especially Wisp. Oh, most especially Wisp. Indeed, I've yet to see a random event that improves PQ to target any world OTHER then Wisp until after Wisp has been improved. And that includes in the lastest Gamma build, 90b just published to the gamma testers. After that, all the
