No need to google for Star Control 2. Here's the link: URL: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

A new random event in GC2. A minor race pops up, and starts destroying worlds. You have to kill them before they kill off your worlds. Whee! It's what they had planeed to include in GC1 but never implemented. It really sucks on maps with low world count, and it's completely ignorable on maps with extreme world count. It's a world destroying event, over and over and over again until someone wastes the buggers. That's really fun and challenging isn't it? It forces you to make a bunch of starbases
As far as that goes, I remember reading in another forum that they'll most likely add terror stars in another expansion. The reason the aren't in the release is not because they wanted to abolish them but because they ran out of time. This is the truth. StarDock has stated that Terror Stars aren't in the game, because they didn't have time to p
BlizzardGR, with enough work, anything could be made to work. But the point is, does it fit into the game play? Look, there's already enough game destroying events in the game. There are eco-terrorist that go around, and destroy planets. This is the same thing as your "nova" event. The only way to stop it is to waste the terrorist. Complete pain in the rump. Spoils the game/fun. Why? Because GalCiv is a strategy game, and too much randomness that changes the power balance destroy the
So, we can just disable whatever features we don't like in the game? Like all the other game ruining random events? Except, of course, if you are playing the Metaverse. Metaverse games will have to be standard... no modding! In the earlier gamma builds, I had every good (fun!) game of GC2-gamma I played ruined by a serious random event. Every one of them. A retail game does that to me, I toss it away, and put the world out to my other gamer friends that the game is a complete waste of
No hotseat at this time. But any TBS MP game that can hotseat should be able to PBEM. PBEM is just hotseating with an additional load/save wrapper on the hotseat process.
It seems that you are being completely unreasonable. Consider: #1) Stars are already many times bigger then the planets. Turn on the gridding and zoom in. You'll see that a Star is much bigger then a single square already, while the largest of planets are still only about 50% of a square. So, stars are 'significantly' (tell at a glance) bigger then their worlds. Enough to show they are a big thing (a star), without wasting too much screen on. Besides, stars are
"Must have" ? For an RTS game, I can understand that. Most RTS games stay fun through the MP challenges and experiences. But TBS games? Most TBS games just cannot give the same experience being MP as SP. Except through PBEM. "Must have" in a TBS game is a great SP experience.
Hey, I do agree that you should be able to put honking big lasers and missile bases on your planet. Then, your planet could defend itself, or at least lend aid as a military starbase does, to the ships defending the world. That is an excellent suggestion, that has been made time after time, both in GC1, GC1 AP, and now GC2. Now, in GC2, you'd only do this on your military hard points, as plaentary tileage is just too precious to waste like that on safe worlds. <img src="smiles/Wink.gif" border=0
Well, remember that moons range in size from large cars to full worlds. So we should establish what a "moon" is if we want to say something is more or less massive then a moon. You do raise a good point. However, as transports are smaller, they've be able to overtake a running world and still invade. So you still end up with needing a local defense force to intercept the transports before they can land on your worlds.
The distance is significant for hyperspace folding. It's just that it takes less energy to fold space out away from star systems then it takes to fold it near things like stars, planets, starbases, ships, etc. That's according to Brad. However, since you can make a starbase the size of the Moon (a planetary object), then you can just as easily put engines on Earth and send it into hyperspace. Why you'd want to, I don't know. But it is just as feasible. It's just a matter of energy. And energy ge
Should fighters really be so restricted spacewise, then it will be very hard to have combined battlefleets with a capital ship and some small ones for protection as then you would limit the range of the whole fleet by adding the small ships. Thus I am still not sure if I like the system, for I still see a penalty for building large ships. I can only see myself build
Not a parsec. Otherwise, the planets would be 2 real parsecs away. Check GC2. All planets from Mercury to Pluto are all 2 parsecs away from the Sun. That's 2 GC squares away. The Terror Star would be how many away? 1. Inside Mercury's orbit. The Terror Star is using its own shielding to remain untouched by the nova. If a piddling little starbase (with really big engines) can do it, then the worlds in GC2 can do it just as easily. And somewhere inside Mercury's orbit means the Terror Star is no
Franco fx, today, at this time, we could terraform Venus. And given a choice between Venus and Mars, Venus is a better target because anything done to Mars isn't going to last for long. It's too small to hold a human appropriate atmosphere. Venus not having a moon isn't even an issue. If it was, then it would also count against Mars, because Mars has two asteriods that are spiralling in to their death. Second, they aren't large enough to help stabilize Mars (the #1 reason people want
Ah, but you use heavy shielding and don't let it through. If you can tap serious power, a planet could shield itself. The Terror Star does not escape. It sits there and watches the results. I'm sure that GC2 Terror Stars will do the same thing. Otherwise, it would be too easy for a civ with a few Terror Stars to do an "Alpha Strike" and eliminate a well spread out race in one turn. That's something Brad seems to dislike, so its a safe bet that Terror Stars will be big and forever slow
The starting scout sucks all around. The problem is it has a sensor range of 3 for all non-Torians. Your starting flagship is a good explorer because it has a sensor range of 5. It might not see that big a difference, but that's a radius figure. And considering you can just build colony ships or constructors and get the same sensor benefits, well. I now design a cargo hold that holds 1 extra engine, 1.2 extra sectors of range, and all else is crammed with sensors (giving it a total se
I have never tried sector sweep in GC2. I didn't find it useful in GC1, so never even thought to try it. Sector sweep will do a Civ4 style auto-explore? Or do I have to keep setting its auto-pilot to go to the next sector, at which point it goes back to sweeping until interrupted?
if you can shoot a large bulky starship with a weapon (laser/plasma/focused gravity beam/.9c lead slugs/controlled micro-singularities/etc) then there is no such thing as a "super-fast" fighter that you cannot shoot. Your guns already have to move very quickly. In addition, in GC2, the largest ships are just as nimble in combat as the smallest of ships. So a tiny fighter tries to swoop, that huge battleship attacking it goes just as fast and swoops just as easy. So there isn't anywhere for a fig
Terror Stars are not a super weapon. They just blow up planets.
Well, I don't know about "dead". There are certainly processes that occur on Venus. We can find examples of life that live in very extreme conditions on Earth, so the slim possibility does exist that it could have life. But that is a far extreme. However, we could terraform Venus, if we wanted to. We could shade it, move its orbit out, crash a bunch of comets and ice-bearing meteors into it ... we could get it started into becoming very earth like (although it would take a very long t
It isn't a true nova though. You create a nova like condition. A true nova, the whole outer mass is blown out. But you don't get that, because the core can still support the upper layers! So what's that mean? Smaller boom. Smaller boom, that means it doesn't eat as much space. Second, a terror star is the size of a moon. But it survives driving right up to the star and blowing it? How? Shielding. The same way a planet would surive. Which, by the way, are all located further out in the
If there was most of the sun's mass left over, then all of Earth isn't necessarily dead. First off, there's a lot of heat in our core. That is what causes those little things known as volcanism, tectonic drift, smokers, etc etc etc. So life in the deep vents wouldn't even *notice* the loss. Second, none of the races in GalCiv would be in much trouble either. Sure, their exterior would be ruined on a natively supportive world (ie, Earth), but most are going to be have access
Er? So you'd blow up a star and the planets would be left on the map? Or would it remove the star and all its planets?
Terraforming Venus is really just a matter of time. Heck, we've got the tech to do it ourselves in reality. Although the amount of time it would take is so long that we humans (as a species) probably wouldn't be around to enjoy it. In terms of the game (which only last a few decades), it might be out of scale, but hey... it's a SF game, so why not?
When you say balance, what does that mean? Right now, you can in the gamma build ships that would wipe out a 30/30 star base. Of course, you can build starbases that end up being the equivallent of 120/120 now too... but powerfully designed ships can still swat down those starbases. Why aren't they in the game? Well, Star Dock has been busy with other things. They may eventually get added in an expansion, I don't know. If enough fans ask for them, they just might. Star Dock
