Just like in SC2, combat is most probably something that I will have to do once in a while or, even, regularly(depending on design). I do not really care about the mechanics (although nostalgia orients me towards top-down). My only criteria for combat is that it be, just like in SC2, relatively easy to become good enough at it. If I have to spend tens of hours in SuperMelee to try to hone my skills so I can try to get by in the galaxy, y

This isn't going to be another "monologue", I just thought I point out a few things... I have no idea if more than 6-player multiplayer is a possibility, or if the 6 player max decision was made long ago and won't change for whatever reasons. So I wanted to point out that only 2 of these scenarios require more than 6 players. Base defense and hockey won't work with only 6 players, all the rest of these concepts will work very well with 6 players. Especial
We'll have to agree to disagree. I find it disappointing, especially the fleet battles. Funny when indie games like StarDrive 2 or the upcoming Polaris Sector offer more depth on the battlefield than the successor of Moo. Cute graphics and great voice acting are not at the core of what made the original a cult classic, but that's what seems to have been put at the forefron

When I first mentioned adding the classic "beer & pretzels" scenarios of the genre to multiplayer I had actually mentioned a couple other scenarios but quickly cut the list to "The Big Three" of base defense, capture the flag, and space hockey. Here are all the other "beer & pretzel" scenarios that I can think of at the moment, I am sure I am forgetting a few, but this will provide a more complete set of options to choose from should they decide to do this. They might like
What I want out of the voice is someone with a memorable voice like Michelle Forbes...
This was considered very important by the makers of both Babylon 5 and the original Planet of the Apes movies. The people who made both of these talk about how important it was that the people behind the makeup had unique voices. That's why you see people like Karl Malden in Planet o

I like stories like that too. I liked Babylon 5 a lot for a similar reason. The humans are not the most powerful race in B5, and are even on the bad guys side for most of the story. I really loved that about Babylon 5, and my favorites episodes of B5 were the half-dozen or so that revolved around liberating earth and bringing them back on to the side of the good guys.
Will single player be 1-vs-1 only, or will we encounter 3-vs-3, with the other 2 friendly ships being AI controlled?
This was one of the reasons I suggested system defenses, to provide some more variety in the fights. My guess is they will use the same "champion" combat system as the original game, and have all the fights be 1v1 (and maybe some 1v2-3s) where the concept is that each fleet is represented by a "champion" to resolve the fig

I will promise you that the combat for Star Control will not play like Star Control 3 and it will be a fun experience.
This has to be the best thing you could have possibly said...
The game is not being tailored to top-down view first and foremost and there has never been any promises that it would be. Even SC2 tried to fake depth perspective in multiple views. The game's combat is being tailored to what is going to make it fun to play.
I don't think they were trying to fake depth perception, the 8 or whatever levels of zoom were necessary due to the screen res

Yes, most of the primary surface ship tactics are hundreds of years old and have applied to naval combat from the days of three masted "ships of the line" to the present day. And that part about "if the enemy is stupid enough to follow you" is you recognizing the effect of what SFB players call "The Kaufman Retrograde", which I have mentioned here before.
I don't know if it's a PERFECT example, but since we're still only dealing with 2 planes of movement (unless I missed something), the system in place with an option for (3rd person) camera might actually be akin to something like World of Tanks or World of Warships. I don't know if you've played either of these titles (or *sigh*...War Thunder), but these actually have pretty solid camera systems that I was even going

Hmm... I was certain someone would point out "But Kang, space isn't filled with colors, those cloud looking pictures are the result of filters designed to detect and display heavy concentrations of particles in space". Why thank you for asking, imaginary person:-) My uncle raised the same point. I had him review the electronic warfare part of my game because he spent his life working on real-life electronic warfare systems at Raytheon. He gave me lots of advice

This idea hit me while driving today. In Subspace all ships had the ability to "Attach" to a team mate, and you became a turret on their back. Your whole squadron could attach too you, creating a 5 turret supership that was very fun, but weaker than 6 individual ships would be. One of the ships in SC could have the "Attach" ability as it's device/secondary. Maybe it can attach to any ally, or maybe there is only one other ship it is able to attach to that makes s

I would really hate that. That would be a completely different thing. I would definately prefer it work like Subpace, SC, Asteroids... really every game like this I know of. EDIT: I had to think about this for a while before responding. The problem I have here is that I can't remember ever having played a game that works like this. Normally I can speak authoritatively on most issues within this genre because I have literally wound up ma

If you want to be competitive online you MUST use either a gamepad or the keyboard. Any other device is inferior. At least, this was considered proven and settled among Subpace players. Gamepad and keyboard are equal but different control devices for this kind of game and which of those you use is just a matter of personal preference.

I am not certain of this, but I think the action may actually be too fast paced for "looking around" with the camera to do much for you other than getting you killed. You may be correct, it might provide an advantage to those who use it (which would make the ability to manually rotate the camera even worse than just removing the fun and addicting quality this genre is known for for those who make the mistake of playing in 3D Iso) but I suspect trying to use a manual view will most often
