thx for bringing this topic to the mainstream Craig;Screenshots serve a very helpful purpose in showcasing skins & apps by many artists as it would be rare to use everything from one artist;ie.Sys Skin, Object Dock icons, DX Objects, Widgets - a screeshot last summer on a Vista Desktop showcased a Samurize WinAmp that has never been surpassed - a great venue for the cross pollination of ideas - they also show how differently we arrange our desktops & can be a source of great inspiration. In final, they, as CL Woods stated, are a terrific marketing tool for the potential for all the things the skinners & programmers put so much time & effort into. Without screenshots many skins & apps would otherwise be overlooked. As far as them making the 'Just In' list, no, they do no belong there as more major works get bumped because of their entry...but they certainly belong on WC in the main list...& yes, it is lame that an uploaded screenshot can't bear the itiemized list of the skins & apps used...a statement to laziness & sloppiness...it only takes a few moments to look up the sources of the works used vs. the hrs it took for the creators to create & upload them....it is also less than helpful should one wish to use something seen in one of the said screenshots...it does a disservice to the creators to treat their submissions with such callous disregard.

I think it would be awesome if the screenshots upload form had a checkbox for each component that can be potentially used to create a entire screenshot. Then screenshot authors would have to tick the relevant boxes for the components they used to make their screenshot in order to enter its name and author for each component used in the shot.
I think this should not be optional and that a comment could not be added until at least a number of the above checkboxes have been filled.

Personally, I see screenshot as a way of identifying awesome work or combination of works that I might have missed during periods of inactivity on the site, and it's so very irritating when people don't mention the names and/or authors of the skins they used to create the screenshot, so that you have to post or dig through comments in order to ascertain which components were used.
There are those who do regularly add this information and to those I would like to say "THANK YOU, your thoughtful contributions make this site a whole lot better."

I do think screenshots an integral part of the Wincustomize and believe they should stay but like all here, do believe that they should not be in the "just in" box and that their names should be truncated.

Yeah, I don't like seeing a huge list of screen shots there. If screen shots are going to be included in the 'Just In' area, there should only be a maximum of 3 or 4. Let the rest go to actual skins and whatnot.

comparing Wincustomize to DeviantART.. they don't pay as much attention to screenshots there as they do here. Indeed, i personally post screenshots for my own joys as well as other reasons.. i search for new WBs and post them as screenshots to let people get a better look at them. i recieve e-mails asking for links etc and therefore i believe that screenshots are a bit important for users and skinners.
DeviantArt, on the another hand, is not all enthusiastic about screenshots and since Wincustomize is i do support this petition. i believe longer names are not necessary and that ALL screenshots should not be allowed in the Just in section. this doesn't mean to not recognize them but leave them to people who care. i am going to stop posting mine and learn something more advanced... your obedient friend, darkdes.

Well nice idea but..but, seeing that the screen shots are still in the " just in " section and some are still uploading 5 + shots a day...making screen shots nothing more than a " picture " contest and now the new trend of " Check my To Do List " for what I used for WB, IP, and the Authors Etc, rather than list them in the proper place and oh God forbid anyone take that extra few minutes to obtain links to the artists work cos thats just too much trouble.( Listing on the To Do List is like trying to force people to hit the download button)

Like I said...nothing will change here. Same 'ol same 'ol

JJ ying's Halo skin released this morning that he worked a month on has been pushed to the 3rd page of the just in list.

Look again....

Like I said..this subject gets brought up..then the " Yes, I agree " comments and then..nothing changes. I look at the screen shots to see what others have done to change things or have found unique items, walls , applications they are sharing. Right now, all I see is repeats of what the authors have made. How hard is it to set limits and stick to it ? NOONE should upload 5 shots in one day. Thats taking up a whole page in the screen shot section by one person. Unless you have something outstanding your showing the world...then noone is that important.

As for JJ Yings blind..im sure most will find it. I did. And his winamp.

In the last day or so...there was a backlog of pending screenshots...all of which would have been posted on the same day...though were uploaded over the past week or so.

This was due to a site 'bug' which stripped the 't' from the nick of the uploader causing the submission to 'fail' if clicked-on.

Example....'treetog' in an upload link became 'reetog'.

T-Man fixed this with a site 'update' around 24 hours ago...or so.

Generally there are not floods of screenies by any one individual [at least not anymore]...

No....it's not all that great an issue...and sometimes it's better to be less 'restrictive' than more....though I do agree that screenies would be best excluded from the skins' 'this just in' section.  I'm sure that will be 'adjusted'....as it's more an aberration than a feature...

They need to be uploaded 'somewhere' before they can be put into that thread....and here's as good as anywhere...

Screenshots - good to see how people use DX/WB/And all the other skins it makes me really happy to see someone using one of my widget etc. I have no problem with them, and think they do have a place here.

Just in - Screen shots should NOT be in this list.

Length of names - Agree as well.

Maybe we can pick what the "just in" list shows? Add that to our settings, maybe i only care about DX/WB Skins nothing else.
Its like the list of librarys to show, maybe we can have a list of JUST IN librarys to show? This way those that want to see their screen shots listed could, or those that could care less can remove them?

Just an idea.

I think Craig is absolutely right here... I love to look at screenshots, but keep them out of the "just in" list. That would be so simple, and so effective. No need to limit name lengths, no need to limit how many screenies uploaded in a day, just simply keep them off the "just in" list. They don't belong there, and that would solve this whole thing! The screenshot gallery is only a click away in the library list.
