Internet Explorer 8?
I just got a popup from windows XP telling me that there is an update available. Turns out the update is IE8.
I use Firefox for all my browsing so is there really any point in installing it?

You can use both but I like Firefox more than IE 8 because there are still more customization options in firefox.
IE 8 is not ready. Avoid it in my opinion.
If it was just a browser like Firefox, then I would agree. Howerver, IE is so integrated into core Windows that it would be a mistake not to keep IE up-to-date.
Opera, doh.
I've tried to install IE8 twice. Each time after it's done, when I click on the IE icon, I get either nothing, or an error message. Lucky for me, I was able to restore.
I agree with this - it's not just another browser, it's the core rendering engine in Windows and many Windows based software. If you're still in XP, then it's also the way you access Windows Update. In any case - it makes sense to update IE, even if you don't use it for regular browsing tasks.
m1...same craptastic here. You can just roll back to ie7...don't need to do a full restore.
IE8 is very buggy. It will crash going to some sites and has other issues. I tried it and reverted back to IE7 until it is sorted out. I suggest you check the Microsoft forums before updating to it.
Been using IE8 since final version came out. Loving it and it's fast. ![]()
ive got that new ie8 too but it seems to take a second or two to actually start loading a page and when i hit open in new tab it takes a second or two to grasp that...other than that no real difference
Well, I set a restore point right before installing, so it wasn't really an issue. Took a couple mins is all. Can't figure out the problem though. Bugs me.
Have IE8 running on an XP Home 32bit system and on a new Vista Home Preimum 64bit system. I've not experienced any problems. I think we should keep in mind that we all 'tweak' our computers and possibly that could be some of the problems.
@ m1- Actually there's a way to do it by just uninstalling the "update". It's the one that's buggy...and did "bug" you.
Yeah...crashes left and right...not good. They've got a lotta work to do on it. I just let it sit there. I'm concerned about uninstalling it all together because of all its hooks in the OS. ![]()

Possibly. But that means that something in IE8 doesn't like something on my current setup. Which works fine with IE7. In the end, it's not a big deal right now as I'm happy with IE7, it gets me on the interwebs and that's fine. But when the time comes that I can't use IE7 anymore...then I'll need a solution.
IE8 is awfull. IT takes for ever to open new tabs, and while its trying to topen the new tab, everything else comes to a complete halt. if i wanted to say, open the Sins forum it would actualy be faster to just open google chrome or fire fox and go directly to the forum on one of those browsers.
(emphasis mine)
I don't see this changing anytime soon. If anything, the gap is only going to widen. Firefox is free and open source and well documented. It's past critical mass, there are more people working on it.
Internet Explorer is used by people who don't care or have no choice (e.g. in the workplace). It's not surprising that these people value quality less.

I have it on 64 bit vista. It is fast and dependable. I do not know why so many people are having problems with it.
Vista came with IE7,it works well and is fast on my rig and will let me cut and paste in the WC forums,so I have no need for another browser at this time.I had FF3 for quite a while when I needed it but reinstalled my OS and didn't reinstall FF.I simply have no use for it now, it has nothing to do with my values which you know nothing about.
Yup, I would say that Phoon is right on with his analysis. ![]()
So if someone doesn't have the same experience as you, in your mind they are automatically classifed as a fanboy? ![]()
Nope, not at all Night Train. Because of the different ways we set up our computers one persons experience may not be the same as the next one. If you look at my reply to the link that Phoon posted, my response to questions like "Which is the best broswer' will always be 'the one that works for you'.
Yeah, I'm supposed to pick one, I know.
I had quite a few crashes .. after all the talk about it .. when I found out that it is easily uninstalled , away I went ..
Downloaded IE8 ... fully aware that it was still a bit buggy .. after a couple of days I got fed up of the IE8.exe crashes , so
back I went to good ol'IE7 ... I probably will install it wnen its been out a few months now .. at least they will have hopefully ironed
out the problems ..
Incidentally ... I also use Safari .. which I think is faster .. even when WC is running slowly , it comes in superfast ...
Dunno what to make of that .... I also use Deepnet Explorer and I have never had a system crash ..
There y'go folks ... my 2p's worth ..
I just checked out IE8 today, it's actually faster than FF3, but a good measure. Too irritating to use though, smart software is dangerous. I hate working around "helpful" guesswork that hoses what I'm intentionally trying to do, like select less than complete words. If I switch, it will be so much faster browsing this forum than it is with FF3, but I'll break my keyboard when I fly into a rage.
For those of you that are going to go "NUH UH!!! FF IS FASTER!" STFU and die. If you were on satellite, you'd know what I'm talking about, since you're not I hate you. ![]()
