Internet Explorer 8?

Internet Explorer 8?

I just got a popup from windows XP telling me that there is an update available. Turns out the update is IE8.

I use Firefox for all my browsing so is there really any point in installing it?

So if someone doesn't have the same experience as you, in your mind they are automatically classifed as a fanboy?

WTF was that all about? Did you even look at the link I posted then look at Reply #10.

This thread started as an announcement that IE8 was now available as a windows update. It, like all other browser threads quickly turns in to nothing more than people "whipping out their wangs" and saying "my wang's better, bigger and faster than your wang". Personal insults and name calling soon follow. (and there are some in here already)

I am an Internet explorer user. The OP asked for advice, I gave them my advice. I don't use any other browser.... ever. It is an arguable fact that IE7 works better than IE8.

I am insulted to have been classified into a group of fanboys automatically because I made a forum post. PHOON- Your comment was an insult and the following comment acknowledging your post was an insult to. Do you not see how trollish it was now? Do you not see how you discredited anything that anyone had to say?

Features which I dont' like about IE 8 -

Web Slices- lets site operators designate areas and information on their pages that can be saved and viewed without actually going to the site. However, site owners have to take the initiative to do this, and so far not many have.

Visual Searches- If you use the search field in the top right of the browser window, results cascade as you type that include summaries and images. Again, the search provider has to enable this capability.

Internet Explorer is used by people who don't care or have no choice (e.g. in the workplace). It's not surprising that these people value quality less.

Just check the acid3 test for all the browsers here and you will know how much better firefox is than IE8.

Also I had been using IE8 beta since the time it was available and I rolled back to IE7 , even ie7 is not comparable to ff3 in my opinion.

The short answer then is no.

Just keep IE7 for what it is needed for and continue to use FF for everything else.

Everyone happy now?:)

Nothing I said was an insult nor did it discredit any LEGIT comments.

What it DID discredit are statements like...

It's not surprising that these people value quality less.

STFU and die.

and this...

Probably is a good idea to install IE8, since it update the absolute garbage that is IE. but it will be a mad idea to use it, since in no time your computer will be full of virus.

These browser threads are a dime-a-dozen here and they all essentially accomplish the same thing in the end.

Sorry if you feel... offended.

IE8 has added some significant security features. It has strong protection against certain kinds of attacks that involve masking Web address, as well as an improved ability to block what are called Cross-Site Scripting attacks. And these new features don’t appear to have a major effect on IE’s performance.

Personally, I'll keep IE7 for now and use it along with Firefox.  IE8 will probably be ok once the bugs are worked out, but I don't care to beta test it for M$.

For those of you that are going to go "NUH UH!!! FF IS FASTER!" STFU and die. If you were on satellite, you'd know what I'm talking about, since you're not I hate you.  :)

But I'm not on satellite.  Maybe you should try Firefox.  It's faster, you know?  :P

Denny,

That isn't something that I'm familiar with. If you provide a link to the form you are having issues with maybe I can discover something. Shoot me a pm.

IE 8 final version is alredy out so you dont need to or have to test beta. :jafo:

No Rules, IE8 was having that problem if you also were running WBs.  An update to WBs fixed that problem and one or two others.  Are you running the current version of WBs?

Sorry, amitsaran.  I wasn't being very clear.  M$ puts out stuff when it should still be in the beta stage.  The bugs for IE8 probably won't be worked out for some time.  That's what I meant.  Anyone going for anything new from M$ is essentially beta testing it until they can come up with a service pack to fix what should have worked in the first place.

"I'll stay with IE7 until IE8 is proven" would have probably been a better way for me to say what I meant.

Firefox works nicely anyway.

I've got it on Vista 64 bit also. No problems, great browser. if it will install to your machine posts are right that it is worth doing because Windows core is enhanced thereby.

Of course, I myself use Firefox because it works and doesn't have alot of newfangled doohickeys like IE8 that was made for people smarter than me.

Well, you are quite rite, even I wrote in my previous post that I rolled back from IE8 to IE7, currently im using IE7 and firefox3.0.10

Though, I hardly use IE7 for anything........

Mottikhan, blow me.  I'm still using it, IE 8 pissed me off too much with the smart text selection. :(

When I'm an old fart with a degenerative motor control disease I'll probably like the feature better, but for now it just pisses me off.

That acid test is nice, but there's more to a browser than compatibility.  I really would drop FF for the significantly faster on unbelievably shitty connections IE8, regardless of compatibility, if it were just designed by intelligent people instead of morons trying too hard to make it convenient to use.  Tools are not smarter than the people that operate them.  Well, ok, tools are not smarter than me.  I'm not too sure about the rest of you.

I don't think I am going to drop FF unless IE 8 has the following features, skins/themes, Adblock, Stylish, Split Browser pr hell even about:config I don't think I am ever going to use IE

Well, even though I use Firefox, I still updated IE. Keep in mind it's still used a lot by Windows and some applications (like Steam and Impulse) for various things.

Sorry, you don't have a clue of what you are talking about. Microsoft products all have alpha, beta, rc and rtm stages, and their quality control is very high in general. Of course, no software is free from bugs, but that doesn't mean it's beta software.

Do your bit to advance the web, don't USE IE. IE has been single handedly holding back web advancement for years now because it comes bundled with windows, IE 8 is only a slight improvement.

Its standards rendering is still pitiful, as proven by the acid tests. Its a resource HOG, and for all the resources its chewing up, it still is a pitifully slow browser (Firefox and Chrome eat their own share of resources, at least they actually do something with those resources and are blazing fast).

IE, even IE8 is still probably the single biggest security threat on your computer.

Final verdict:

Step 1. Upgrade to IE8 because its so tightly integrated into windows.
Step 2. Install Firefox / Chrome / Opera / Safara and use one of those instead.

I was an FF fan for a long time. Dabbled in Opera and GC as well. I'm quite happy with IE8 right now. The primary reason I use it is because it's faster. I no longer need Adblock from FF because I have my Host files blocked out. There are a handful of sites that function better with FF but overall I'm happy. I'd recommend at least trying it. Worse case scenario, you just don't use it afterwards if you're unhappy.

If you honestly believe IE8 is a faster browser, you have somehow fooled yourself.

http://www.chromeexperiments.com/ - Basically just a site where web devs put up some "after the death of IE" intense javascript experiements.

Try out any of the stuff on there with any version of IE you like and watch it explode, then try with Chrome/Firefox/Opera/Safari.
