I believe I had thought about this before when making my own melee clone; you could make the 'bubble' in which the battle takes place smaller and smaller until it is so small that you have to engage in battle after a while :). But the problem with this, or any system that allows fast ships to be 'reeled in' is that it creates a sure win for the bigger more weaponized ship, all he has to do is wait. I know the image you talk about, I think it was posted WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back in 1999 on the old star control board. But I don't think it's on my hard drive anymore. Might be worth it to check on the official Star control forum at Star-control.com :)
