I've been away a while and out of the loop in regards to all things SC, only today read about all the legal drama. Having browsed around for info a bit, and looked over the timeline of events on the SC wiki, I honestly dont know what to think. My kneejerk reaction would be to side with Paul & Fred, but I can't wrap my head around some of their actions. -Why would you refuse to buy the trademark to your universe (and thus prevent all these issues to begin with) for 300k, only to la
I don't want to see much "gating" though. That was part of the fun. In the original, you COULD head straight away, to Alpha Centauri, with planets that are 5000-degrees, and loaded with fuchsia Tzo Crystals - AND IF YOU WERE GOOD ENOUGH and had a lot of luck - swoop down, grab a few crystals, rinse and repeat, until you had a nice haul! It would help put you ahead, and that's an amazing feeling. You DID that, it was your own achie

5) Our RAM sticks still occasionally scream: "No god! No god please no! No! Nooooo!" Subsequently ejecting themselves from their respective motherboard slots, they hover approximately 2.5 meters above ground in a strong horizontal spin for about 30 seconds before finally bursting into flames. How much RAM does the average founder have again?

Not sure if this was already discussed, but if we have environments tied to difficulty, and a low number of overall environments, isn't there a risk that players will basically be funneled to certain environent types during the early, mid, and late game? I'm guessing there will be some diversity involved and the Easy/Med/Hard categories might just represent a general tendency, but still: Early game players will be inclined to explore desert/barren, and thus potentially grow bo
THIS IS EXACTLY RIGHT! a unique defensive trait that blocks incoming fire from the front, but is weak if you get behind him! Holy crap, that's ingenious! And perfectly in line with the star control spirit. That'd an arcade action mechanic, TOTALLY! I think it would add an incredible level of depth to fight a ship like that... You'd have to pick your fastest shop to get behind him. I mean, maybe you think
Awkbird and Lone_Utwig - I think what you're not really getting is the fact that Star Control 2 was an arcade-shooter. Its combat isn't going to be Elite:Dangerous or Star Citizen, or practically any other game out there. It's fun, fast-paced combat for anyone to pick up and enjoy for a minute or an hour. There's a certain simplicity to the crew/battery readings that levels the playing field for all ships and that was some

Question about solar system view: Will planets slowly move along orbits and/or spin on their axes, or will they be stationary? Asking because the moment I saw that blue planet with very large asymmetrically placed crystals, I imagined it wobbling on its wacky axis, and almost burst out laughing. Love the music, but I agree that race specific hyperspace themes should only appear once first contact with those races is made. Wouldn't want the surprise spoiled by elabor
Either way, you're right, the alien design and detail of the Mukay surely beats the design of the ORZ. However, the ORZ are just so bonkers, tentacles flipping about and a bird-beak with gills... just defies anything we've ever SEEN. Coupled with their hilarious and unfathomable speech, AND the fact that somehow, just by discovering them, the Androsynth just... disappeared?! A true mystery that has kept me up many nights. That
Quoting prodigalmaster, reply 4 I don't know about that. Despite the dated artwork I find the Ur-Quan (and especially the Kohr-Ah) superior. The first time I saw the Ur-Quan (when playing Star Control II), their image immediately made an impact, and my stomach dropped. Looking at the Scryve, I don't

I'm not sure whether pairing and comparing images of SC aliens solely based on their physical characteristics is the best idea. Would it not make more sense to compare based on, say, how effectively the image supports/obscures the character of the race and its dramatic purpose? But to do that we would need much more extensive knowledge on the new aliens, and at least a basic notion of their roles in the plot.
Scryve

I'd like to see Stardock's take on grotesque and frightening aliens. This new alien is meh compared to the Mukay, but they clearly can do cute. That said, I've yet to see an alien not reminiscent of a cuddly toon plushie here. Even that smartphone overlord race looks like all they really need is a great big hug and a kiss from me to you.

True. I'm not saying it's a bad deal. Like Hunam, I was merely responding to the notion that 99$ is an extreme amount for a game's lifetime. It's a lot, and it's a risk, no doubt about it, but depending on the game and the amount of planned DLC it can be very beneficial. Imagine Paradox offering an "all future DLC bundle" for Crusader Kings 2 or Stellaris (Right now the base cost of CK2 + all DLC is almost 250$, and they aren't even done yet). People would go insane fo
^ Just to put things in perspective. Fallout 4 on its first "major" sale was only $44. Season pass - $24. That's $68 for the game's lifetime about 2 months after its release.
Haha, don't forget they hiked up the price of the season pass to a whooping 50$ after announcing it would include more content. At this point F4 + pass costs 90$ on sale!

Pop culture references? Something about that race of smartphone dominated social media aliens tells me you guys have nothing to worry about.

I'm burned out on Civ at the moment. Hoped Beyond Earth would be a breath of fresh air, but the base game was lacking, just like Civ V at release. "There's no end to our imagination, and no limits... to Civilization (VI)" Harr harr, at this rate Civ VII will fully embrace a self-conscious satire of itself.

Reminds me one of my frustrations with the Mass Effect series. There's a galaxy full of staaars! Welcome to a galactic epic! (But all you get are these three places, teeehee!) Wish they had designed the story to be dispersed among many worlds. Instead they (mostly) just went for major hubs, and instead of expanding on exploration in part 2 and 3, reduced it to a joke. If your setting is the vastness of a galaxy, that scale should be at least somewhat relevant.

The only trailers that struck me as interesting in recent months were those for Hyper Light Drifter, to the point where I actually ended up buying and playing that game despite not being a fan of the genre. What got me was how they made excellent use of their game's soundtrack, and synchronized it with images so effectively that the end result has a near hypnotic quality. A single unique audio snippet instantly conjures up the game logo in my mind. Many games try it, few succeed.

Woo, logged in to find so many exciting things going on this month. Honestly, I don't think I'm competent enough to delve into the minutia of combat systems, so I'll just state my impression of the combat clip in the vault. I find the perspective somewhat confusing. If combat is fast-paced, I probably wouldn't want to play with the camera panned like that. I'd prefer something ship centered and closer to top-down view, for easier spatial orientation, and less obscu
