Also... Space is big, you know, the whole Douglas Adams line. But it is also very easy to make it small. If, in the distant future of the SCO universe you decide you want to do a "galactic scale" DLC it is very easy to explain that in a way that everyone accepts. Both natural wormholes and artificial "jump gates" can potentially be said to have any range. I intentionally give them a relatively short maximum range in my own universe to prevent making the galaxy such a

The wrap around of the original games was just a different kind of barrier. It feels like more freedom, but actually isn't. The last I saw Stardock was planning on having many types of maps, including the original wrap around map they call the "Interstellar Space" map. So, in reality, SCO will have a lot of map variety where SC2 only had one map. This is just the map they are using in the early beta.

"Moreover, having this shared experience lets us have some puzzles and quests be very very hard. Requiring players to potentially work together online to figure them out (these are side-quests). Many of our games today are so dumbed down that it’s just a matter of going through the motions." Yeah! This is a great compromise. Optional side-quests that are hard, and the main game/story quests that have to be completed to finish the game can be easy enough for anyone to

Yes... we called them "races" in the SFU, but in recent years that has apparently become a "PC incorrect" word and it has been changed everywhere to either "species" or "empire" depending on the context it is being used within. I don't see the problem, but apparently the younger people do.

I realized that my best memory of Usenet was hanging out with JMS in alt.rec.babylon5 while the show was airing new episodes. That's one of the reasons I like B5 as much if not even more than Star Trek. You couldn't hang out with Gene Roddenberry asking him questions about the show, but JMS was there (and very active) for anyone who cared to come see him. Those were such great days! Also still in somewhat of a state of shock over the death of my doppelganger, David C

Hahaha... In SFB we had a running joke for years about adding "The Wesley Torpedo" too the game. You would fire him on too the bridge of the enemy ship, and he would annoy them into surrendering. Haha!

And speaking of "primitive forums", wasn't USENET a lot better than what the internet evolved into? Accessing USENET through a local BBS. It sounds primitive, but there was a single topic for each subject that was used by everyone in the world. Today, there are a million different places with the same forums. Divided, segmented, and each with its own little dictator who decides who is and isn't allowed to speak. This is progress?

The only thing I liked about the old Measured was the Yosemite Sam mustache and beard. The new Measured is a lot better.

It's consistent as to new posts in an old thread, what there is currently no indication of are new threads.

My 4-year-old computer occasionally crashes during the first match. Sometimes the one or both ships are invisible at first (still, but now rarely when before it was always). Also, during the first match (first fight of the first game after turning it on) it can sometimes just stop for 30-60 seconds before getting over whatever it is (I assume still loading things in the background). These things only ever happen during the first fight of the first game after having t

Nah... Stardock actually knows that they are making Star Control. When they do modern re-makes of Master of Orion they don't have any idea what game they are supposed to be trying to make, so naturally they are disasters;-)

Yes, I had just noticed that this time around. I'm accustomed to old-style primitive forums, so none of the rest of the recent changes bother me.

Threads with new posts are not bold anymore, so you have to look at the times to see if there are any new posts.

That was one aspect of what I was trying to convey. Another is that not everything works. You can imagine anything you want, but reality will remain reality no matter what you imagine. But even this was only the tip of the iceberg. The Mycon, for example displays a deep knowledge of the tactics of space combat. You can't arrive at something like the Mycon through trial and error or accident, you have to understand the tactics of space combat as a science to arr

This doesn't actually make any difference tactically within the game, but on an immersion level it also makes no sense that 5 ships have arrived but if you kill just one of them the other apparently disappear for some unknown reason and the fight is over.

I think he means it zooms in too closely at the closest level of zoom, which I agree with. I think the closest level of zoom should be pulled back a little bit to give you greater situational awareness of your surroundings. Right now it almost feels like looking at the action through a straw when it zooms in that close. You are probably about at the same level of closest zoom as SC was, but I always thought SC also zoomed in too close at its closest level.

This is actually a speed issue and not a weapon issue. The longer you can keep it on the target as you pass by the more damage you will do. But right now everything is moving too fast to do this, so you can't only "tap" the enemy with it for a brief instant. The slower the action becomes, the more powerful this weapon will become right along with that.

It starts to seem silly once there are half-a-dozen "fighters" hopelessly chasing you around. The Drenkend ones would not be out for long before returning, and you'd probably always want to save the ability to launch at least one to protect your sides/rear if needed. It might have 6 instead of 4, these are just good starting points for playtesting. The Pinthi "things" are not fighters, they are some type of living "space monsters". One uses follow pursuit, the other

The key thing you missed, then, is the fact that Sheboygan III is not a safe place. There be space monsters there!!!

Weapon Range Definitions I thought this might also be helpful even though I am not generally worrying about about individual weapon/device ranges in this post as they are all “in the ball park” as they are. “Range” is relative to the engine, map size, etc. The tactical functionality of these ranges are a constant, the units of measurement involved are relative. In this “top-down space shooter”

I didn't actually wind up playing much SCO this weekend because I didn't need too. I found that I only really needed to jump into the game a little bit here and there to check on some things, so I finished this a lot sooner than I was expecting too. You will notice that both hit points and ship point cost are generally defined by class, and are proportional to class. This is a critical aspect of how the ship point/lineup system w
