Greetings Frogboy, Vaelzad, and fellow Fanatics, Firstly, my apologies for the delay in posting on these topics! Death in the family, and veritable plague for the survivors has kept me from the forums for the past few weeks. I must admit, I wanted to read each and every comment on this thread, but realized in the middle of page 3 that most posters were looking at things from a different angle

I would like to see a large/puffy star...one that is sluffing off its outer layers. One that doesn't have a well defined edge, as most stars do. Could be a large pre-nova. I would also like to see very rare real stars like pulsars, magnetars, etc. Not that they would even have to do anything, but it would be so nice to have them in the game, even if it's only on multiplayer/melee. There are so many interesting varieties of stars, and we have come so far wi
I find myself in strange agreement as well... I don't think enslaving races I encounter is really in the game play that Star Control inhabits, but giving interesting choices (dare I say, like GalCiv!) for events and encounters would certainly fit within SC's narrative. It's easy to see that two different captains in SC2 would react differently to finding Earth enslaved...one could do what we all did, and try to recruit allies to save the day. Another c
We are doing are best to not reuse star names.
Sweet! I vote we rename Sol "Home Plate." Seriously though, if you're not reusing star names, I hope that means this takes place in a different "quadrant" or whatever. I always wondered what stars would be out there if you took the SC2 map and shifted it to where Sol was in the top right instead of the bottom left.
True, but keep in mind - Star Control II graphics were absolute bleeding-edge technology-wise at the time.
I didn't realize that. :) I was too busy looking at the Syreen...
The conversation screens on SC2 did the job, and were super simple, graphics wise. The characters themselves made the story. The graphics helped. Think of the original X-Com for that...the graphics are trash by today's standards, but if I reload that game (and I have recently!!) then on the first nighttime mission, I am scared outta my chair! The story makes those graphics irrelevant on X-Com. SC2 is the same way for me. The ships and aliens a
Merry Christmas Star Control founders and staff! If you've been good this year, may an Ur-Quan slither down your chimney and bless you... If you've been bad this year, may a Kor-ah slither down your chimney and eradicate your people... <img src="http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/aliens/imag
Love the music!!! Thanks for both treats! Merry Christmas to the staff at SD too.
Watch Star Trek The Search For Spock and see what an Earthquake can do! :) More 1-3 more types of hazards could be fun to add! I hadn't thought about it till reading Hunam.
Sweet. Thanks Vaelzad, for the reply. I look forward to seeing more examples when that time comes.
Amen! Progress! Hope SD reads this far into the thread. :) The planet STYLE is fine, but the colors could use some (possibly extreme) variation. :)
What about Mmmgm, Farilou, Recursors and Punzervault?
Haha! Wonderful! I would LOVE it if the Arilou or Orz introduced the game, and then we don't have to hear from them again. Please SD, let one of the original races hand the game off to us!
SD probably feels they have to reinvent the wheel. If they used almost the same art as GALCIV there could be many reviews calling Star Control Foundation (That is what I am naming this game) a half-assed attempt that is only recycling SD material. There is a good chance they want to avoid such reviews.
Good point! As I mentioned, SD has a great track record of
I was going to say intern, but being an intern implies getting released someday...too soft a stance for Druuge!
Agreed! That would be awesome! Fighting in a two-star gravity well would be fun, and binary systems are extremely common in real life, which would add more realism to the map you're making. :)
Mwahaha! Break the NDA by using their tantalizing ring tone and become an indentured servant until the game is published! They are Druuge through and through! StarDruuge. :)
I think the concern that I and a few other people share is the idea that if there is nothing to ground our experience in reality in the game if everything feels 'cartoony' then we're not going to be able to form the same attachments to cast and characters. We need some anchors to reality to make things feel more real and immersive, planets and other things that we actually know about seem logical choices for this.
Don't think about the new ones for a moment... Think about the old ones...Really! Stop and think about them. They were...circles. That's it. Blue. Red. Yellow sometimes. From space, they were NOTHING to look at. We remember them so fondly because of our experiences on them. Stardock is promising an even better experience on them soon, and I, for one, am happy to wait for that before coming t
While grounded in reality, what I remember about them is the crazy Orz, the mercantile Melnorme, the cruel Druuge, and the ridiculousness of so much of it! They can do this right, IF they are internally consistent with their art direction in the whole game.
For the record, I am anti-loot. Love the BSG analogy. :)
*In all seriousness* I was wondering this too. Abbreviation will come in handy over the next couple of years. SCR makes sense to me, even if that's just a founder's only forum reference and doesn't make it to the final version. Anyone else for SCR? SC1 SC2 SC3 SCR as the common abbreviations for the four versions?
I loved that too! The game was all about mystery and wonder...and nothing being trustworthy except what you could see with your own eyes (scanners). It was totally wonderful! THE MAP LIED! :)
That said, I would be disappointed if Stardock's approach didn't mirror the points that were pointed out: we've only seen relatively straight-forward and to some extent "natural" looking planets. But wouldn't there also be planets with a foreboding deathly hallow? The kind of serious and deadly planet that makes you very wary of setting foot on it. What about a glassed planet - the remains of some war. Or a shattered planet
I'm a little skeptical of a high emphasis on "loot" in a space adventure like Star Control. So many games on the market feature loot, you don't need to play SC to get that "fix." SC focuses on great story, exploration, and awesome space combat. Keeping it simpler will keep the game defined in its proper niche. However, if loot MUST be done, then extremely random loot reinforcement should be the way to go. Say, 1 in 20 battles yields any interesting loot
