The Yor do it in Sandbox mode, too. Playing a game as a custom race and not only did they build defenders with no weapons, they build defenders with shields and no weapons. Can we say, "cannon fodder?"

I was delighted to colonize the Starbuck system
Three words: World of Warcraft Lots of mainstream console games are being ported for PCs, and I believe, at the rate PC technology is advancing, it will be cheaper to upgrade to be able to play the higher-end games. The reason I can say that: graphics technology is leveling off. The details are becoming more and more minute, and any developer will tell you, because of that, gameplay is going to be key more than ever. Graphics are coming to a
The ability to research multiple techs at the same time: say three. Have a slider for each, separating them into percentages just like social, military, and overall research are. This way, if you want to research just one, you can. But, if you're a research oriented person or playing a technology oriented society, you could have more options. I also think it would put more "oomph" on the feeling that you're actually going u
I'm not buying it, either. Someone needs to get the word out to the HOMM fans so that none of them wind up having to buy a new computer just because they wanted to play their new game.
I can't tell you exactly what's in it, but if you want the best description of Master of Orion III ever.. pick up a copy and read the first sentence of the review. I think it's pretty clear now that everyone set Orion as the bar, and Galactic Civilizations have passed it. Now just wait as Dread Lords solidifies as the best 4X out there.
In the new Game Informer (which has a Dread Lords review you should check out, btw), the opening statement of the MGS3: Subsistence review really sums up what we all think about Stardock. You make other companies that DO care about their games still seem "embarrassingly inadequate." I can brag about this operation all day long and not run out of good, factual support. I wish they gave reviews for companies cause you guys would get all the stars. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/s
There are 377 habitable planets on the gigantic map I'm playing right now. Habitable. If I had to worry about all those that AREN'T habitable, a sure case of insanity would set in. I realize that other players would be going insane with just the 377 habitable ones. I like moons being cosmetic, and starbases do the job well enough. I would like to see multiple moons, though. Big ones, small ones, purple, green, all around one planet. Then pl
No money "directly" out of them, though you do have the econo-boosters. I like to think of them as the "downtown" of the galaxy. There's always a party, a business meeting, a million things to do. I laughed till I cried when the Akilian leader popped up and complained that his daughter had been at a party on Deep Space Fourteen. "You do NOT want to see a member of my race wearing clothes made for you ::shudder::"
You should divide two columns (1) Things I have to do before I end my turn (2) Things I want to do before I end my turn Let's face it. Unless you're in a touchy diplomatic situation (i.e., you suspect an AI player of plotting against you), there's no good reason to check the Diplomacy screen and Foreign Stats and Reports every turn. There are a lot of screens that are just general "good to know" things that you don't have to check every time. The kicker there is,
Remember that the updates are optional. They may change some things that you don't want changed. As far as access to your ship designs, it seems that they're currently working on a fix for that "million ships of the same upgraded class" bug that fills the quickbuild screen with junk.
I can see that. "Hey kids! Come on ur up to the coloner ship! We done did fill up this here planet with our spit n rust buckets. Yo momma said she can't find the wash under all this mess." The idea of a "ghost planet" also seems cool. Like if you could find a random planet where all life was wiped away leaving pristine buildings and a huge mystery (a la Serenity).
The good's always going to win out. People who love the game will stick around. Nitpickers will always move on to find something else to nitpick. Constructive picking and critique is good. I always feel proud when I read someone's review that has been well thought-out and gives both sides of the issue because they know there is someone on the other end who the game was made for and someone for whom the game was not made. These people honestly try to help you make choices. Most of us don't like t
Actually, one of my custom races is the Space Rabbits (I'm not joking), so the population growth fits really well with them.
I'm playing on Tough against nine players. I'm neutral, warm, or friendly with all. The thing all of them have in common is, they think of me as minus minus --Military Strength. They all have militaries. I haven't built a single ship with weapons because the AI pops up and goes, "Oh you're so great. Here's some stuff for being so peaceful." So I'm an economic, industrial, technical powerhouse with no defensive ships. Everyone likes me or doesn't care about me. We're al
The scale issue is explained by ships having to travel slower inside solar systems. The population issue is explained by overtaxed people not entering in the census so they don't have to pay taxes. Both explanations are reasonable and very well thought out. As for the issue of realism, it's a game. Realism has to be sacrificed for gameplay. I personally like the balance here. More realistic space scale may work for another game, but I don't think it's for this one. What
I know you're probably aware of the bug that packs recent upgraded designs on the quickbuild and governor screen. This one may be a result of that: I go to update the ship building on the governor screen. I've upgraded my ship class two times. So all three generations of it are showing. I've figured out now to go to the bottom one when it has the same name listed three times. So I update all my planets to build the brand new version of the ship with fast engines and
I just wanted to encourage people to bring out the RP element, especially those who love to tell stories. I've started one under Master of Orion (sorry, there's no GalCiv category on there yet - closest I could get) called Galactic Civilizations: Sivil War. Put on your storytelling caps, people I was much inspired by the gameplay stories posted on this site shortly before the game's release.
The Arceans are your "on the fence" race. It only takes a little work to make them your friends (namely trade), but if you ignore them completely, your enemies will snatch them up and you'll find yourself in a war. They will also bide their time and make logical, strategic moves on Intelligent. Even when the Arceans are losing on one front, they will find where you've overpushed your line and hit you in the soft spot. In short, they don't panic. The Drengin panic, but they don't show
The sentence "The AI isn't very smart" is relative. The AI can adapt very well from what I've seen while playing. There were a few dozen turns where the Torians had a ton of colony ships pressed up against their maximum range like kids pressed against a plate glass window, not coming or going, just trying to hope their way through. I didn't take that as a good sign, but later in the same game when the Arceans attacked the same spots over and over as a decoy to throw the largest fleet I've seen i
I remember playing GalCiv 1 and loving that on every new load, there would be this, "Here is how things stand" screen with tons of info. Yet, every time I load a saved game, I get the initial, "The galaxy has become a tense place. We'd better go colonize fast" yada yada, as if it's the first turn again. Is this normal or an issue?
I'm cruising right along on a Galactic Civilization II: Dread Lords fanfiction piece. I went to www.fanfiction.net and found zero fanfics written on this. That surprised me. My sci-fi knowledgebase includes mostly Star Trek: TNG, DS9, VOY, and the movies. I loved Babylon 5, especially the last few seasons. I also think the Galactic Civ universe has amazing potential. Therefore, my fanfic is a Star Trek/Galactic Civ hybrid where the Federation exists but instead of having Klingons, Rom
Ug ug. Wait until the Drengin accuse you of stealing their Cloudsong. Man, they really get mad about that.
My stupid suggestion would be to program in a random AI response for when you blow up their flagship. For instance, if your leader name were say...Khan.. then the Drengin would say, upon the blowing up of their prized vessel, "KHAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNN!" Or maybe just program the AI to say that randomly for no reason at all.
I felt badly for not going to war to help the minor races. So, when they came to me for help, I gave them each one of my latest and greatest Archer model capital ships. Medium hull, four beam attack, one armor defense, comprable speed. Their enemies were still using ships with one missile and one mass driver attack, no armor, and about 2 speed. The Archer Class was just what the minor races needed. I handed over one ship a piece to two minor races and after a few turns I've noticed that these sh
