Just purchased an upgrade from version 5 to 6. The purchase window had a link to version 5, had to use the purchase history to download version 6. Now I got this "business stuff" in the config:

Just upgraded to Fences 6 from 5, that tabs have this padding is mildly infuriating, with this padding, they are bigger than normal ones without tabs:

Video:
https://share.pauli.gg/2025-04-18_12.06.27-549873.mp4

OS: Windows 11 - Version 24H2 (Build 26100.3775)
OS Language: German

Is there an option to disable the padding? The "preview" in the fences settings doesn't have it:

Have you tried the "Segmented" option?

Thank you,

I've only just started using a fences demo, it appears to 6b1, so I don't have the time to fully test anymore today, but just a 'headsup'
File explorer folder right click context menu 'Show this folder on desktop' seems to be a bit sticky. Sometimes it responds end creates a fence, sometimes it doesn't create a fence. It may be it fails only when doing this from a 'quick access' pin, or it might not. I can't check for just that factor right now.
But maybe this will help corroborate if there is a similar report and so recommend closer investigation. If I can reliably reproduce at any point I'll post more details.

Just installed Fences Beta 6.2 Windows 11.  I love the Tabs, but as I'm reorganizing my numerous Icon, I am unable to keep the Group in the middle top of the screen I can get the tabs to the line up with the Tabs on either side of the Grouped Tabs as seen in image.

Not all text in above image is there.  The big issue is the Tabs for the TOP Middle group will not line up the TABS at the TOP of the ICON Groups, It automatically flips to the bottom?

Is there a way to get a list of applied fence names including file names within each fence?

Hello,

Please elaborate more so we can understand more on what you're trying to have.

Thank you,

Is everyone back at work now - working on Fences 6?  It's sketchy that your SELLING BETA software.  But if I elected to try Fences 6, what are the chances of frequent updates since we're beta testing your software for free?

In case I have to redefine my fences (starting from stratch) it would be nice to have a list which files were allocated to which fence

Lots of companies are actually selling early access or beta products before they hit the final release. It isn't that unusual anymore

Of course with the server crash there has been a bit of a delay with beta 2 being released. Hopefully development starts back up soon

Fences causes "Open File Location" right click dialog to fail, as well as other windows11 desktop right click context menus. "Display Settings", "Personalize" etc. The old style "Show more options" commands seem to be unaffected.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I can not reproduce your issue. Need more informations.

  1. Windows 10 or 11? Also need its full version and OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe to get these.
  2. Fences full version number.
  3. Post a video to any video sharing site and share its link here, on this issue would help us understand it greatly.

Thank you.

I'm using the Stardock Fences V6 b1 on my w11 24H2 machine with Deskscapes V11.02 for both monitors.

On trying the Chameleon feature, when the fences are dimmed (as default) the background for each dimmed fence is backwards of what background is applied in the Deskscape.

so...  with Chameleon activated, showing on monitor 2, with the beach scene background, fences have the background from monitor 1 the circuit board.  This happens from also on monitor 1 circuit board background with the Chameleon beach scene background from monitor 2.

from screen shot from monitor 2

Great update.

Steve.

This was already selected in the Deskscapes settings performance tab.

Does both your monitor have HDR turn on? Just as a test, turn off and see if that resolved it. Might need to restart Explorer.exe.

Hi SteveDavies,

We regret that the Chameleon feature isn’t compatible with Deskscapes or any other animated wallpaper program. The effect is not realtime and requires a static wallpaper to be set to work. We’ve added a development note to add a warning to the program. Sorry that this is the result.

Hopefully the new Tint feature might be of use to you instead, for helping to blend the icons into the background.

What about the idea of using the mouse wheel? When you scroll the mousewheel down then the rollup rolls down. When you scroll the mousewheel up the fence rolls up. I think that would work pretty good

Wouldn't work for me personally as I don't have a scroll wheel on one of the trackballs I use, but I know that I'm somewhat of an anomaly here.

I know this is probably taking the product concept further from where it is but would also be nice to have the option to have fences not push around other desktop icons. The use case that I have here is that I have a tab group of fences that are rolled up and I have icons on the desktop (not in fences) that are in the same area the fence occupied when it is in rolled out mode. Normally I can access the desktop icons and if I want the icons in the fence I hover over the tab, it unrolls and select the icons that I want. Occasionally I want to repeatedly access the fence and so I pin it open, but then it rearranges all of these icons that are under the fence area which breaks this workflow.

Hopefully that makes sense as a description but let me know if it doesn't make sense and I'll try to explain it in a different way.

Any chance Fences can supply such a list?

At risk of sounding like a complete idiot, is there a way to migrate my current pre-version 6 'fences' to the 'tab' format? Or do I have to start over? If that is the case, how do I create a [new] tab? I read through this thread, but found no answers, and the tab menu in Fences 6 seems to only say, "to create a tab drop one fence on top of another." [By the way, I tried to do that by making two new fences and dropping one on top of the other, but nothing happened.] I want to get the icons within each individual fence to morph into a tab.

Fences 6 definitely does have its own unique spin on tabs so it does take figuring it out.

You are correct to drag and drop one fence on to another fence (if it is in the correct place you will see a small "drop to add tab" dialogue). But there is one other step. A dialogue will pop up afterwords "add tab to group" you must click this for it to be added.

To remove a tab you have to hold down the "shift key" and drag and drop the header into an empty space.

Mastering these new mechanics may take a little practice but it eventually gets easy.

Thank you for that. It will prove to be helpful, but how do you create your first tab? Is there a way to convert existing Fences to a tab format? Edit: I figured it out. I was looking too deeply at it.
