I just installed Fences 6 Beta 1 on Windows 11 Pro, 24H2, OS Build 26100.3476

Windows Experience Pack 1000.26100.54.0

NVIDIA RTX A4000, Driver = 572.60

I rebooted the PC as instructed.

Using the default Fences RMB option, there is no option to "Create Fence"

The option to "Configure Fences" is available. I have tried the LMB as the creation option, but "Create Fence" option still not available.

I hope a solution is available soon or will re-install Fences 5 next week.

Looking forward to using Tabs.

The tabs work for me with "Switch tabs on mouseover" enabled in Tabs settings & "Rollup fence" checked when right click on fence and then view. After I have applied these settings, I "lock fences", but from some forum posts, I'm not sure if that option is available for everyone.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please check if you have not locked your Fences while you on previous version. If you do have it locked, please unlocked it. If the locked Fences don't appear on your desktop right click menu->Show more options->View menu. Please use this guide to turn it on. https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1621360668/Show+%22Lock+Fences%22+in+Fences+5

I do like the "Switch tabs on mouseover" option

I understand that the speed of which tabs are switched was made with care against accidentally hitting tabs which is good.

Still, I think I would like to see the speed increased for switching tabs. Not a lot, something like a 25 percent increase to still preserve against accidental tab switching but also increase productivity speed a little

Is the Fences 6 beta supposed to be labelled as the Business Edition?

Is there a way to give one "overall" title to a Fence with several tabs? I used to have four different Fences for my games, but now I can use one with tabs! Still, I'd like to give one overall title to the whole thing. Is that possible to implement at some point? This pic is what it looks like now.

Hello,
I don't believe Fences 6 have such option.

Basj,

Your suggestion did not resolve the issue.

I have uninstalled Beta 6. I reinstalled Fences 5. Still cannot create a fence.

I may have to uninstall all Stardock products and start over.

Regards,

Jerry

Do you have any other software that also install its own desktop overlay? For example, 360 total Security causing the same issue as your, as mentioned here: https://forums.stardock.com/494957

Welcome back Stradock, I'm really excited to see how the final product of Fences 6 turns out!

This isn't a new issue but it is a little more noticeable with tabs

When using pages: The animation when going from one page to another often shows the incorrect configuration

For example, the wrong open tab will appear open only during the page switching animation. Or a rolled up fence will appear open during the page switching animation

If I hide / unhide my fences via double left click it does correctly reset my configuration fixing the problem temporarily. I almost wish the "hide / unhide" was automatic during the page switching process so the animations would stop getting stuck.

Using Fences for the first time so come to it with completely fresh eyes.

I realize that you've encountered a fairly significant outage/disruption so all the best sorting that out and expect these will take a back seat to that, but thought it still best to share my feedback anyway.

Here are the things that I would find most useful that it lacks (moderator edited for readability):

  • Custom order in folder portals. It actually sort of works at times despite saying that it doesn't (shows the right positioning visualization during drag drop and reorders the icons correspondingly) but it doesn't remember the custom order after reboot. That the only folder that you can do custom icon ordering on is the desktop and I like to visually organize my icons is what brought me to try fences in the first place.** Even if it had to write a (hidden system) sidecar file into the directory to remember the order would be worthwhile to improve the experience here.
  • Would be nice to have folder portals return to their base folder after a timeout of inactivity (optional). At the moment if you navigate into a portal sub dir it holds that dir. But it would be nice to have the option if you stop engaging with it that it reverts back to the base dir.
  •  Would be nice to have a visual on the tab to see if a folder was empty or not. I tried using folder portals to manage incoming data. If the tab "name bar" highlighted if the folder had content it would be useful to see that data was ready to act on.
  • Adding a drawing pin icon to the left of the 'x' (close) on tabs when roll-up is enabled seems more user friendly then double clicking the titlebar. But understand its more visual clutter so can understand the absence.
  • Agree with others that it would be nice to vary the timeout on tabs when you hover over them before they are activated. Personally I think on by default for this option would be more sensible default (I was going to request the feature till I noticed people posting about it here and went hunting for the setting).

** This is the only deal breaker. The other things are just things that I think would improve the experience.

Also I'm not 100% sure, given 6 is listed as Beta if I place an order now am I licensing version 5 or 6 (talking about the outright option...not the subscription model).

    Hope this feedback helps.

Basj,

I do not have 360 Total Security installed.

I had Fences 5 installed. I could create fences as expected.

After installing Fences 6 Beta, that is when the ability to create fences stopped.

Existing fences are still working, I just can't create new fences.

Jerry

Great, glad to know that, if you have try it yet, Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

Note: This is just to make sure Fences 6 get installed properly. Make sure to follow the purge instruction and only restart after the purge is completely done.

Please try Cleanboot as mentioned here: https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1332445272/Fences+Clean+Boot. Do note that Clean boot need to be done with care, follow the instruction steps carefully. Try that and report back.

I tried this with various rolled up Fences and tabbed ones.  I couldn't reproduce what you're describing (see video link).

If there is anything specific you've done to make it happen, or something you can isolate from any settings changes or your setup, I'll be happy to look again.

Basj,

I am looking in Task Manager, Startup apps section. Is it normal to see Fences listed twice?

Yes it does need to start up twice.

Basj,

This PC is joined to a network domain. I have full network admin privileges. How effective will it be to add a new admin profile?

This is starting to be a lot of work for a $9 application.

Regards,

Jerry

Basj,

Your suggestion to try a new profile gave me an idea. I logged on as the network admin. Fences worked as expected. I could create new fences.

I logged in again using my profile. I was unable to create Fences. Clearly the problem is in my profile.

It would be a huge task to rebuild my profile just to recover functionality for this utility.

Perhaps the non-beta release of Fences 6 will repair the issue. Let's close the matter for now.

Thanks for all your efforts to resolve this issue.

Kind regards,

Jerry

It is a little easier for me to reproduce with tabs, it happens bit less often with the roll up feature.

To reproduce you will need to navigate to different tabs. Try navigating to a different tab then then the original opened tab and then switching pages (sometimes this needs to be repeated several times as it doesnt always get stuck on every tab switch). It is hard to say exactly when the animation will get stuck but eventually they do. Rollup fences does the same thing if you unroll / re-reroll the fence (the animation will make it appear open when it is closed), although it get stuck much less frequently then tabs do.

I will also note that most my tabbed groups are 3 or 4

-edit- I tested a little more it seems to be even easier to reproduce if the tabs are NOT in a rolled up position

What about the idea of using the mouse wheel? When you scroll the mousewheel down then the rollup rolls down. When you scroll the mousewheel up the fence rolls up. I think that would work pretty good
