Hello! Is this section inactive only for me? The goal is to move the start button and the search engine to the center.

P.S. The problem is solved, I got lost due to lack of reading.

Hi. I have a crash whenever I try to drag something on the taskbar (not 100% of the times, but at least 90%).

It looks like explorer is crashing and Win11 with it.

Windows 11 21H2 22000.832

Start11 v1.25

We very much would like to look into that but need a dump from it.  You can see how, here:

Thanks for the effort and feedback.

Quoting Ryderjj1989,

There is an issue that I'm having with 1.25 where the taskbar and icons will flicker/refresh every time the clock gets to 0-3 seconds. Like some kind of weird resizing. It happens every 10 seconds and only happens when showing seconds on clock is active.

For example, at 5:30:00 - 5:30:03 I will notice very visible flickering on the taskbar especially around the tray.

Can you post a video of the issue?

Sean Drohan

Yes, here's a video. This unfortunately does not show it as bad as I have had it happen to me but you can see all the icons shifting from :00-:03. It seems like the more icons I have in the tray, the worse it can be.

https://1drv.ms/v/s!AmxAd68BNmv4wdc4Yk_cPfOKhgTjuw?e=OGaB1l

This is being caused by your time and date settings.  By having a short form date but a time with am/pm and seconds enabled you have a situation where the total width needed for the clock varies as the font is not a fixed width one.

If you were to alter your date settings to show the date in a longer form, or change to 24 hour clock this would not happen.

A similar issue can happen without seconds showing when your day changes but it would not show every second, just when the date changes.

I see. When the date changes wouldn't be so bad. I'll see about the long form date options and see if any of those help at all. I do like having the seconds on the clock but the flickering every 10 seconds is annoying when you're used to looking for changes on the screen. To be clear, I have not actually changed my format. I'm in the United States and using the default formats for short date, long date, time, etc. I have never manipulated the date format and only ever wanted to have seconds on the clock. I manually changed the short date format to show like "Aug 10, 2022" and the flickering/shifting of the tray has stopped. Easy enough fix.

Just an update on this here. Changing the short date format is not a viable solution. Programs like Quicken will not work properly as it tells me to choose a valid date. It has changed my short date format in that program as well as in my browser for things that use short date. It wasn't an issue until I saw that Quicken will not let me enter transactions because it looks like Aug122022 for the date and it deems that invalid. I can't even manually change it.

Unfortunately this means a fix will have to be put in place for those who use seconds on clock and use the default format for short date.

I have tried with clean boot a few times. It only made it work properly at inital boot. But afterward it was like previously. After for example resuming from hibernation and/or sleep the same issue occurs.

So far, 1.24 seems to be the most stable yet. I had to uninstall Start 11 for a bit as there were a ton of performance/crashing issues in the last couple of versions. We'll see if these reappear long-term, but so far so good.

A couple of things I've noticed so far:

With a two-row, small-sized taskbar, the tray icons all appear behind the clock.

Changing to one row fixes it although they look a bit cramped. Perhaps a small taskbar should only have one row of tray icons per taskbar row? Or shrink the icons slightly, if that's even possible.

The two-row taskbar also appears to be even more broken in medium size, the clock and notification button are completely gone. Clicking the blank spot in the corner does nothing.

I've also noticed that occasionally on my vertical monitor, the clock becomes offset and is partially cut off at the bottom of the screen. I haven't been able to reliably reproduce this issue though, and an explorer restart always seems to fix it.

Start11 v1.24

Win11 build 22000.675

This having this problem with v1.25.

I also have small icons and double row, but not this problem. The only difference I think of now is that I have a keyboard language selection icon in between. Also my taskbar is at the top.

Maybe try this? tell us how it went

There's a missing feature in the Start11's Taskbar implementation.

Windows 11 Pro (10.0.22000.856) + Start11 v1.25

On the regular Windows Taskbar, while dragging a file from an explorer windows, we can flight over the mouse onto an other application's button in the bar to have it's window raised (after a short wait time) and ready to handle the file drop.

When the Taskbar is configured to have the application buttons combined, the preview thumbnails are then automatically displayed and ready to activate the target window in the same mood. This particularly useful behavior is missing from Start11.

Could you please remedy?

Using Start11 1.25 on Windows 11 Pro and I have the same issue with the taskbar location aligned at top of screen. It floats around and on occasion will, "Heavens to Murgatroyd, exit stage left." as Snagglepuss would say. Basically, it moves from left to right, completely off the screen.

I'm using Start11 1.25 on Windows 11 21H2 (Build 22000.856)

I'm clicking Win, ArrowDown, ArrowRight and this is the result:

On Start10 it opened the remote desktop connection when I entered the described keys:

- Win opens the Startmenu
- ArrowDown selects remotedesktopconnection
- ArrowRight goes to documents instead of (as ist was in Start 10) expanding the remotedesktopconnections

Start11 1.25 (30-day trial, have not yet purchased), Windows 11 22000.856:

Windows Terminal's taskbar icon renders as a black square when the app is pinned, but not yet open. Upon opening a terminal window, the icon renders normally.

It makes no difference whether you resize or reposition the taskbar, or switch between combine/never combine labels. Interestingly enough, the icon renders correctly when booting up Start11, but it quickly becomes corrupted.

I have reproduced this bug in Windows Sandbox. You can run Windows Terminal in the sandbox by installing the following AppX packages:

Hello,

using Windows 11 22H2 and Start11 1.25, there are some icons that, when used for an entry in start menu, make it crash. I can provide with a copy of such a file. How should I proceed to upload it?

I kept forgetting about related bug to the Start menu not hiding (closing ) with mouse button: Mouse button also does not work for hiding the „restored” (unminimized) windows after restoring them with mouse button. This is annoying and unlike stock Windows and I have to move my hand to the keyboard to Alt-Tab instead. So far, I at least hope it is taken note of and to be fixed in next release/s. Because basically no one from support replies here…

Could you explain in more detail about this as the taskbar should work exactly the same as the default OS in this regard.

Are you using never combine taskbar buttons or always combine and what are you doing exactly?  Be aware that if you have always combine but have > 1 open window for that one app then clicking on the taskbar button will not minimize it.

If you can upload to say dropbox or onedrive or google drive and then either post the links here or private message myself or Sean with them then we can take a look.

This was an intentional change.  You now expand those by pressing space once you are on them.  The reason for this change is if you have lots of apps with jumplists then using the keyboard it is tricky to get to the right hand side.

That said there is a small issue with the keyboard focus being lost which will be fixed in 1.26.

We have reproduced this but we have also reproduced this without Start11 running.

It is a bug in the version of Windows you are using and is not caused by Start11.

I believe later versions (22H2) of Windows 11 will not have this issue so I am hopeful it should be resolved shortly (ish)

What scaling factor is your display set to as this isn't something thats showing up here.

My dual monitor setup is 2560x1440 @ 125% scaling to the left (the primary monitor, where the pinned apps go), 1080x1920 @ 100% scaling to the right. My graphics hardware is an RTX 3060 Ti with Nvidia driver version 516.94.

There's no difference if I reduce the scaling to 100% for both monitors, and I still get the black square in Windows Sandbox at 100% scaling.

But I just tried Start11 on my laptop, and it didn't have this issue. That system has a single 1920x1080 display at 125% scaling. The desktop has additional jump lists for VS Code and Windows Subsystem for Linux, if that possibly makes a difference:

Okay, so my laptop seems to be the anomaly. Hyper-V, Windows 11 Pro, Start11 1.25: black square when pinning Terminal. I don't have a clue why this is happening with a fresh VM.

Hi! I have one suggestion for Start11 that I really like to be implemented. It's about the ability to lock the resizing of the menu interface, similar to "Lock all taskbars". When I choose the option "lock menu" or "unlock menu", I want to be really locked and when I move the cursor around the menu margins to not appear that mysterious resizing icon instead of the default cursor, but if I unlock the menu, the resizing ability will be active again.

The option of combining the taskbar buttons is set to „sometimes”. Regardless; restoring and minimizing should work always regardless of whichever option. I know that: when combined, then there are many windows – but it should just default to the current/last active one. (So, please take note to take care of that some time later).

Additionally, I have just noticed that; when it sometimes does not work, then it either: some times does not work at all, or it some other times restores the wrong window – (this time again it restored the pre-previous or pre-pre-previous window; either of which wasn't even of the same program).

Regards :).

Hi!

I still have this issue since first release of Star 11:

As you can see taskbar appears/start at half the monitor.

This happens to me when I switch from another app with ALT-TAB and more frequently when I switch from Anydesk to any other app or even desktop.

Should be like this:

I've reinstalled, uninstalled and even fresh installed W11 but still happening.

Regards :)

Latest version of Start11 on Windows 10 Version 21H2 (19044.1889) - noticed a few issues:

1. Lag in Win10-Style Tile Menu
It is currently extremely difficult to adjust individual tiles in the Windows 10 styled start menu:

  • Set Start11 to Windows 10 style menu mode (really great replica, by the way - better than the original)
  • Right click any Tile -- as you browse the menus, the sub-options will take a very long time to appear

2. RGB 0,0,0 Doesn't Affect Taskbar
This issue has actually been present since Start8:

  • Set the Taskbar color to RGB 0,0,0 and nothing will happen.
  • Set any RGB value to 1 and the Taskbar will change color.

3. Start Button Animations Altered by Start Menu Type
Animations seem to be affected strangely under certain circumstances:

  • Select a custom start button with clearly delineated hover/active states
  • Observe the hover/active states of the button when activating the start menu
  • Deactivate Start11 from affecting the start menu (so that the default W10 menu appears)
  • Observe the hover/active states of the button when activating the start menu - they will be different

Enabled core isolation in Windows 11 today (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/core-isolation-e30ed737-17d8-42f3-a2a9-87521df09b78) and ever since doing so the tray icons display very weirdly and poorly.  It is as if there are other layers 'behind' the icons that should be there.  If I run my mouse over the icons they 'clean up' and show correctly.  Here is an example of what I am talking about on the right side :

Only started happening once core isolation was enabled.  Besides that, occasionally I will have something similar happen on the desktop where the entire desktop drops down 1/4" or so and the that 1/4" is white with what looks to be other windows, icons, etc behind it in grayscale if that makes any sense.  I haven't thought to take a screenshot of it when it happens, but will next time.  For that I haven't found any method to correct it, but for whatever reason it does go back to normal after awhile - why or what forces it to correct I have not been able to determine.
