Star Control: Founders BETA 1

Star Control: Founders BETA 1

It's been 25 years since Star Control II.

Today, we hope to give the Founders the first taste of a new Star Control adventure game.

NOTE: This is under NDA so do NOT video or take screenshots of it to share outside the NDA area here or on Discord.

Please keep in mind that this is all still work in progress. Your mission, should you choose to accept it:

- Play the first 30 minutes of the Adventure. Then play it again, and again, and once more for luck.
- Keep your bug-eye out looking for bugs and typos.
- Once you have a good feel for this part of the game start providing feedback on the doc linked below and in this channel.
- We are looking for feedback on pacing, presentation and overall feel of the game and story first impressions.
- Have fun breaking the game.

To access:

  1. Go to Steam
  2. Right click on Star Control: Origins and go to properties.
  3. Click on the Betas tab
  4. Enter this branch password TywomSweatIsDelicious
  5. Choose the VIP branch.

It should then download the game (it'll be pretty big) and you can begin trying it out.

You can post your ideas, thoughts, suggestions on the Founder's Starbase forum.

Basic info we'll want in any report:

  1. What Operating System are you running
  2. How much memory your computer has
  3. What video card you have
  4. What CPU your computer has

I find the easiest way to get this info if you don't know it off hand is to run DXdiag.

The target release date for Star Control: Origins is the end of Summer.  That will mark the beginning of the new era of Star Control games!

Good luck!

UPDATE!

We've created a response thread: https://forums.starcontrol.com/489387/star-control-beta-1-response-thread

Keep posting here and we'll keep updating the response thread.  Some of your reports are so awesome that we didn't want the responses to them to get lost in a comment. :)

Thank you everyone!

Anyone who is running into perf issues at all should make sure that number isn't set to 2.  2 is not even designed for today's machines but rather designed for future 8K desktop resolutions.  1 is supposed to be the default and 0 will be a setting for non-discrete GPUs.

I had some fun testing this out, because why not right?  System specs:

Windows 10 Pro

AMD FX 8350 @ 4 Ghz

32 GB RAM

AMD 390X 8 GB

Playing at 1080p

Below was what I witnessed while exploring Europa.  Nothing was affected during Solar System flight.

AA set @ 8 with terrainHmapQuality @ 2:  Gets the expected dropping of FPS.  What I did notice was that the GPU pegged out at 100% immediately upon "Beginning Landing".  I see 12-15 FPS

AA set @ 8 with terrainHmapQuality @ 1: Graphics look identical.  I can't see any difference, and the GPU is pegged out again at 100%.  I see 39-43 FPS.

AA set @ 1 (lowest) with terrainHmapQuality @ 1: Same as above, zero difference.  39-43 FPS with GPU @ 100%.

** Bonus:  What was really fun was when I turned on Motion Blur.  I could suddenly see through moons...

I'm not fond of the starbase girl. Too Jolly and cheerful and always making light-hearted remarks. I think i would like her to be more professional and serious. After all she is in charge of a multi-million RU starbase, we expect her to be more professional about it and it realy feels our mission is not as important because it feels the humanity space exploration it's lead by a teenager.i

i totally agree. She Reminders me of Spice girls that comes across as totally unaffected of the fact that a race is trying destroy the entire humanity.

Spice Commander. :D

That design mistake is totally gonna make it into post-release memes. Just like some ME:A mistakes.

- Commander, Skryve are gonna kill us all.

- Go pick up some alien (that nobody ever expected to show up) at Triton while I'm making myself coffee here and, please, try not to die out there, Captain. *whistling* *filing her nails*

You guys DO get that one of the pillars of Star Control was always humor, right? It's like you expect SC:O to be some super-serious hard science fiction game.

While I completely agree with what you are saying about humor being one of the pillars of Star Control, there are different levels of humor. There's the smart humor, that's entertaining and witty, and there's humor on the level of a 5 year old... No offence, but... Starbase commander acting like a teenager and dialog such as "Don't die now!" "Can I die later?" "Ha-ha!" ... This is closer to a 5-year-old's level.

Exactly. Atm most of the humor i see in the game is realy childish humor wich is a shame.

SC2 did have a lot of humor, but it was mixed into a lot of serious ideas aswell, but at it seems Origins only has the humor so far, leaving the serious part aside. If this continues into the following chapters i realy fear the game will be labeled as a casual game instead of being a clever one.

Hopefuly it will get better.

What i still don't like is the scale of the planets we land on compared to the lander. They are TINY (yes, even the larger ones). I've tried diferent kinds of zoom levels and the feeling is always there, the scale is way off, it feels the planets are a little toy and not a big planet.

I still believe you need to add some mini-maps on more screens. The landing part realy needs a mini-map. People will have good nostalgic feeling from SC2 and it would make it easier to get to the minerals still missing to collect.

I agree about the scale, but I find that's probably more an artistic choice. The main annoyance I have is that sometimes resources seem to be buried under mountains and I don't seem to have a way to dig them out.

I also agree on the mini-map. I really miss that from SC2. Hunting the last drone was really totally frustrating and kinda spoiled the fun.

I don't like the auto-targeting on the lander, or rather I don't mind that, but I have no idea where my shots will land, how to pick target, and what it's actually targeting. There was a lump of rock on one of the planets/moons that looked exactly like the "practice" ones when you get the weapon. I totally failed to hit it, my shots going all over the place and eventually gave up assuming it wasn't a valid target.

With encounters I have no idea how to avoid a conversation. How do I not talk to a ship?

Improvements from the first build to the current one were almost entirely excellent (the ones I noticed).

I'm really liking almost everything else. I hope they fix the screens showing the controller buttons, instead of the key-mappings, but I guess that's something for polishing.

I now want to see what hyperspace looks like.

Even though I promised myself I would not play the game until the full release I could not help myself...

I did several playthroughs so far and noticed the following small things:

  • Lipsync of the commander compared to the voice seems to be lagging by .3 of a second
  • Several resources on planets are underground
  • I had a Scryve drone appear after already killing the main ship and doing the first contact threat lines
  • We need a mini-map when in a system
  • Using escape to leave a planet is odd
  • Shooting the laser is just weird when you see the shots go over your intended target due to the extreme curve of the planet

The 2 main things that are bugging me right now are the Lexites, and landing on a planet.

The Lexites seem too... normal. They lack any mystery since we explored the ruins already and seem to be able to interface with their outposts and ship.

Landing on a planet wasn't too bad at first but it gets old really fast. I dread having to do that on several hundred planets in the game. It also seems superfluous since this is just an extra danger on top of all the other dangers already present on a planet.

^ we don't need a mini map anywhere. We need a better auto-zooming algorithms.

I also agree there does not need to be a mini-map.

Remember please use the new Beta 1A discussion thread.

I'm personally much happier with auto-zooming algorithm in latest beta. It's light years ahead of the first version.

Here's my feedback after a few playthroughs

Windows 10 Home 64-bit
16GB
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti
Intel i5-4690 CPU @ 3.50GHz

Bugs:

Reproducible:

When investigating the Lexite base on Elpis the first officers voice over stops between "Oh this is nuts" and "going away from" then his voice reappears. I've tried it on 3 different games and same had the result each time.

If I go and get all the ships parts before speaking to the Tywom, the Scryve probe doesn't appear. Not sure if this counts as a bug but it seems it would make more sense if collecting one of the parts triggered the probe.

Intermittent:

Once I lost background music while exploring a moon. I had to restart the game to get it back. It hasn't happened again though.

Once the first officers voice stopped at random then reappeared a couple of encounters later.

Sometimes when I land, my landers gun keeps firing until I hit fire button on keyboard to reset it. Mouse1 doesn't work to stop it but will work to fire once reset. I have my fire button bound to rightAlt

Other than that it has been stable, suggested improvements: The Lexite backstory needs to be clearer at the beginning. The first thing I did when I started the game was land on the moon and it was weird with the characters talking about them like I should know what they were on about when it was my first encounter with them.

Could someone please pin this thread?  I had a hard time finding this initially and I was really excited to try chapter 1!

Progress:  Landed on several planets.  Got the moon cannon.  Made first contact; reported back to Star Control.

What I Loved:

  • The first 30 minutes feel like Star Control.  Tune, story, soundtrack, gameplay all feel right.  Awesome!
  • Smart zooming during solar exploration works well.  I was originally worried I would not be able to see where I was going but that ended up not being an issue.
  • Lander gameplay feels right.  It is fun, fast, and simple without feeling too casual.  It was on the easy side but feels right for the starting area.
  • The Captain's Log is a great addition to the game.  I had to rely too much on paper notes in previous Star Control games.

Possible Areas of Improvement:

  • Lander HUD feel out of position on the upper left part of the screen and too small.  My eyes are mainly focused on the lander.  I would personally prefer the HUD on the bottom center of the screen.
  • Exhausted dialog tree options should grey out to indicate the player has already seen them.
  • It would nice if the Captain's log could indicate if a given entry was completed/explored/etc.
  • Moonbase encounter
    • The popup dialog options for the moonbase encounter felt off.  The X button felt like the wrong button type.  I was expecting some sort of "OK" or Accept icon.
    • I did not get a New Objective popup when I finished the encounter without the required uranium.  I think the Captain's Log updated with an entry but I expected a popup for consistency.

One thing from the last playthrough: In addition that i would move the lander info-bars to bottom center screen and make the cargo-space the biggest (since thats the only one youre always interested), Id take off the possibility to lose a lander by one shot lightning. That seems a bit too nasty. Put more lightnings in there and make them do less damage so it is at least theoretically avoidable to lose a lander if youre smart.

I played through chapter 1 for the first time today and really enjoyed it! I would echo what others have to say about the starbase girl being a little off-putting when contrasted to the dire situation, but I quite enjoyed the dialogue with the Tywom and got a good chuckle from a few of the exchanges with them.

I seem to have encountered a bug however. I had retrieved all the parts for the Tywom ship and ran into the Scryve scout, destroyed it, and then went to deliver the Tywom parts. On my way back to Earth, another Scryve vessel appeared and I raced to get to Earth before it could intercept me. I got there, talked to the starbase commander and received an earthling cruiser and the Tywom vessel. I left the starbase, destroyed the Scryve vessel, but any time I went back to the starbase afterwards, the commander was stuck telling me to destroy the Scryve vessel I'd already taken down. It seems like I did things in a slightly different order than expected and broke the triggers.

Just started playing but wanted to drop a quick post.

Loving my first 20 mins, brought me right back to the 3DO memories with SC2. To Brad and the entire team at stardock, thank you, thank you, thank you, for making this happen.

The humor, art, tone of the game, cheeky dialog responses are fantastic.

Just a few quick items for feedback/improvement

I didn't know my lander would kersplode if I didnt hit the landing zone when I tried to land on a windy planet, you get the warning about the windy planets but players should know missing the zone is lander death.

Small bug in the dialog after you kill the first scyrve ship, The text on the screen doesn't seem to match the audio

The actual voice over I believe is saying "And when you get herewe have something we need to give you"

Awesome game so far, cant wait to get into the rest of the story.

only issue i noticed so far was the commander's voice over not existing for some of the dialogue options.

i like how this feels sort of like the start of SC2, i assume most of the player base expected a game that would feel like that one.

pluto not appearing as a binary dwarf star is a bit surprising, especially considering it's big enough to have been considered a planet for a pretty long time, has a known-ish orbit and is more significant than some of the moons we've seen.

the planet that appears in its stead seems to come out of the blue. why? you have a perfectly good "planet X" theory to draw an extra planet from, no real need to make stuff up on sol.

will there be a second chapter? in which we get to see actual hyperspace implementation?

I can't get anything to launch.  Tried months ago to play the BETA, kept getting a missing executable error.  Am trying to reinstall now after trying again today.  Also attempted to launch Fleet Battles Beta today.  It's just an endless circle of clicking on "play" in Steam, which takes me to a SC website, which has a "play" button, which takes me back to Steam.  Endless circle.  I also don't see the "First Chapter" Beta anywhere. What am I missing?

You put in the beta code, but did you click the arrow to select the beta you would like to opt into?  You have to do that too.

Right click the SCO game in Steam and click properties.  Then go to the Betas tab and click the arrow beneath "Select the beta you would like to opt into" and select either vip_elite2 for the Founder's beta, or if you are trying the SCO Fleet Battles beta then right click that and select properties, go to the Beta tab, click the arrow, and select closedbeta.

Please pick only one thread to post this issue.

What?  I'm lost.  I would rather it appear as a 1947 Studebaker Starlight coupé.
