Origins: Which aliens from the original series do you want in?

Origins: Which aliens from the original series do you want in?

Greetings!

As you know, Star Control: Origins takes place in a different universe than SC 1/2.  So they have different timelines.

However, this doesn’t preclude any aliens from being in this timeline.

The story dictates what aliens could potentially appear.  As we have iterated on the story we have had to keep adding new aliens to the game to fill in a niche.

For example, there’s a refugee race that is migrating through the Scryve sector. They’re completely new but weren’t added until recently because they’re not part of the central story but they are part of the greater epic that is developing not around the adventure.

Another example was the requirement for a species that had been keeping an eye on the progress of the humans for thousands of years who were wise and interested in our success. After some consideration, it made sense for the Arilou to fill that role.

Another more recent example was the need for traveling traders. As we keep ha  wring the adventure over and over with different choices and doing...unexpected things we found a need to have a race of tech and information traders. We decided the Melnorme fit this role.

Now, with the understanding that the year is 2088 and hyperspace in the Origins universe has a very different positioning of stars (the Scryve sector has more stars than SC2 I believe but it’s the stars within 70 or so light years from us so many stars in SC2 are well outside that range)...what aliens would you expect to run into? Don’t say Orz btw, we’ve considered them but we have plans for them later.

Let us know what you think. Also, remember since this is a different universe, it doesn’t change the canon in the Ur-Quan universe.

I have a soft spot for the Spathi, but I guess they are too important a race to just show up in a prequel.

C'mon Zoq-Fot-Pik how did they not get a mention? "The Fall of the Zebranky!" Story line.

I feel like we already know the old races. I look forward to meeting the new races and story. While they might make good cameos, I would hate to see Stardock retrodding old ground. Star Control 3 shows what happens when you keep reusing the same stuff over and over, it gets convoluted and stale.

Please keep up the great work.

Star Control 3 shows what happens when you rush a buggy game out and have questionable writers...  And puppets.

It is a hard game to do to be sure.  When SCO ships, it'll have been 5 years since we began working on it.

That's longer than SC1 + SC2 took to make combined.

Of that I have no doubt.

I do think SC3 could have been a good game with some... Tweaks.  I even like the general idea behind the colonization mechanic.  Even if it seemed...  Unfinished (like so much else in that game :( )

Taalo would be interesting as it's never really been explored in Star Control.

I want to move away from the Star Control 2 aliens, but I'd love to see more of the SC1 aliens that didn't make it to the sequel.

So my vote would be for Taalo, MmrnMhrm and the Androsynth (although I'm not really sure if this matches up with the year Origins is set - happy for someone who's more familiar with the SC lore to correct me if needed).

That transforming MmrnMhrm ship was one of my favorites in Melee.

Looking at the possibilities from the races from SC1 and SC2... I've always imagined the true conflicts to be multi-dimensional.

Each story/game will always have a regional conflict that you have to deal with like the (Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah)

This typically serves as the main plot and gives a beginning and end as something to accomplish.

While dealing with the regional conflict, you are slowly building up two other stories.

A broader conflict that deals with many quadrants that can/will impact all the regional species like the Precursors, Slylandro, Melnorme, and the Mycon.

This conflict will slowly tie all the regional conflicts together and will have each species drawing a line on different groups and who to support. Hopefully with a few surprises turning some previous allies into enemies and previous enemies into allies.

And an even broader conflict that deals with the fabric of the universe itself; species like the Arilou Lalee'lay, Orz, Nnngn, and Taalo.

This conflict would eventually serve as the 'End Game' and ultimate story.

As this conflict progresses, the stakes would be severe as you would have the complete annihilation of some species and even whole quadrants get destroyed or become uninhabitable.  Players that play through the whole series would be rewarded for completing each story-line and would serve as the purpose as the true MacGuffin for Star Control.  Pissing off the Orz could quickly end your game.  Even setting certain events in motion might end your game because the Airlou want to 'protect you' and decide putting your whole race to sleep is the proper thing to do.

With that said.... Orzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Puppets, music, voice acting and (new dialogues) was precisely what I loved in SC3. Especially puppets which looked mean and creepy.

Unfortunately, the other aspects the game were a bit of letdown. Still this was quite a profitable game that year (1996) for Accolade. And puppet animations were top notch tech at that time.

People who didn't like those puppets have no heart.

having that said, if SC3 races are considered, I'd love to see at least Daktaklakpak and Clairconctlar in future DLC.
