I have pretty much moved on from the likes of Skype to Telegram and Discord. Both services are much better suited for creating private chatrooms, in the case of Discord with multiple channels, as well as having voice chat if you need it. They also have far better support on a variety of platforms from Windows to Linux and mobile phones. All with very discrete hardware profiles when compared to Skype.
The big issue with Skype is that the software is really out of date by now, especially on anything that is not Windows, and it has also become accosted by advertisers. Not to mention its controls for "groups" is just abysmal. They sold the company to Microsoft and they have little interest in developing it beyond what existed back in 2008. Compare it to something like Discord where you can create multiple custom user roles and setup bots to help you automate all kinds of things from moderation to announcements of things like twitch streams. Or Telegram with its amazing privacy features and customization options.
If this chatroom was on Discord or Telegram I would join it right away. But on Skype I just don't feel like installing a piece of software that can sometimes chew through an entire gigabyte of RAM and that I do not use it to keep in contact with any of my friends or communities anymore.
