I'd say that the RPG aspect of SC2 is wholly overshadowed by what it primarily is: an action-adventure (in a space opera setting). Some RPG elements are present - but really they take a back seat. Pacman, too, has RPG elements. SC2 has more prominent RPG elements than Pacman; but not to the point where the general consensus is that SC2 is foremost an RPG (the general consensus being that it is foremost an action-adventure).

I think this is also a bit of the kind of situation where we know that scientifically a tomato is a fruit, but general consensus does not put it in a fruit salad.

Quoting Hunam_,

As I said, it's all in your head. ;)

You're discounting my points, in favor of abruptly sticking by your guns. I thought we were better friends than that.

You made up your own RPG definition and trying to convince everyone else that that's it. What can I possibly tell you to convince you otherwise?

RPG is centered around your character, the one you play a role of. SC2 is not centered around your ship. Your ship doesn't have personality to role-play. ME is more RPG in this case than SC2.

RPG character stats matter 'cause they define the character you're role-playing. 15/100 in speech means you can't tie 2 words together, so your armor prices are "too dam high" (c). SC2 doesn't have it. ME doesn't have it.

The stat check (die roll etc) is there, 'cause RPG is trying to emulate real life (like the mood, character etc of NPC ). SC2 doesn't have it. ME doesn't have it.

What SC2 has are RPG elements like hard coded choices (no stats check), ship upgrades that define your ship properties, but not its or your character. Very little freedom in your choice too, unlike RPG. The game engine isn't built to accommodate multiple choices, unlike RPG.

Diablo isn't and RPG. It's an aRPG. Mostly A than RPG. So you can call SC2 an adRPG - Adventure RPG. But it's not an RPG in its original sense when you refer to digital RPG.

No, no. You're mistaken. I didn't make up my own RPG definition, any more than you're deciding and enforcing YOUR definition of an RPG. That's really what this is.

I'm taking the term for what it is - a general role playing game, where you get to take on whatever role you choose in the fate of the galaxy. Sure, the end game is whether or not you beat the Sa Matra - but the path to get there is based on how you play, what you say and the role you play in others' lives, upgrading your ship's stats along the way, and bringing along the companions that suit your playstyle.

It's you who is confining it to the RPG game you've decided to compare it to, with shades of RPGray that you've come up with to determine their levels of RPG'edness. That's fine. In your specific argument, where you personally defined what the definition of an RPG is, based on how you feel and what you qualify as "RPG", I suppose no one can win, except the person who set the ground rules (you)! So you're right - in the confines of your argument, there's no speech level, so it's not an RPG...

There's no THAC0 and strength potions, sure, but I suppose I'm not so narrow in my thinking of what defines a Role Playing Game. I don't need those very, very specific words, to define (confine?) a Role Playing Game. And in the broader sense of the world, based on the PRINCIPALS of an RPG - SCII is as RPG as you can get.

Why did you have to give him that Karma, ShadeDark? It was fun watching him agonize over being at 99.

Also... People... I have not played Mass Effect and may play it over my break. Please avoid spoilers.

oh man, this is tiresome. Is cuore always this way?  Could we please just meet in the middle and have Cuore call SC2 an RPG and everyone else call it a space opera or whatevah.?

Okay, noobie, listen here. I was pretty happy we had some new blood on here that would keep us entertained for the long stretch between updates (you). You even made a couple good points and showed some genuinely good knowledge of the star control universe.

But then you had to go all serious and be a jerk about it, "is cuore always like this?" talking as if I'm not here? Classic. The answer is: Hunam and I get into these mock arguments all the time, to pass the time between updates, but aside from the No Man's Sky incident, we always stay good natured and not mean or awful, like you just turned it. You don't know me, don't presume to.

And either keep the "argument" fun and lively, or kindly stay out of it. This forum has no place for trolls.

And Hunam, your argument is Wikipedia page. Got it.

Well, I've got a slam dunk later today, so check back here soon, bro.

Perhaps I forgot the smileys but I was joking in that post :D. My reaction was more along the lines of 'not this shiiit again' :). I've been having such discussions back and forth for the last 15 years, and now your thread is being derailed by it. So I guess it was half serious :). But by all means not mean and awful ;).

Matt, getting upset over internet posts is like smashing your big screen TV 'cause Hillary didn't win... ;)

Ok, back to my play-doh session... *_*

It doesn't help that he is stuck at 99, while we rigged the election to get past 100.

"Matt"! Haha! And in a patronizing way, too. Is this pile on me day? It's okay, I can take it. From you and IBN, of course, seeing as we've had years to form our mutual bond. But not from the new guys, jeez!!! I couldn't possibly be upset about what you losers say on here. Annoyed, yes, but legitimately upset? Please.

Also, why would I be upset Hillary didn't win? That wire-haired man-goblin doesn't deserve to be the first female president of the U.S. I can't wait for a woman to be president, but not HER...

Wait a second - did you somehow find a way to get me back down to 99?!?!? You conniving sonofab! I WAS AT 100 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON! WTF Stardock!? Now, I'm with Hunam and want Stardock to drop development of SCO, in favor of working exclusively on the forums.

Also, cheating to get to 100 makes you guys not good people. I made it there, legit, so suck on that! ;) Of course, now I'm back down again somehow, so, I guess my win doesn't count either lolz

This is the SECOND time my thread has been derailed. First by boobs, and now by snark?! Shame on you! I don't mind an elbow to my ribs, let's just keep it good-natured. This is supposed to be a fun place, for people who share one great thing in common - love for Star Control! YEAY! I don't care if you're an axe-murderer in real life, we can be brothers in Star Control anyway.

And lastly... I told you all I had a slam dunk. It's coming to prove my point........

The sad thing... Is that I have to give you Karma for that. Enjoy your 100. It was fun tormenting you while it lasted.

And now for the swan song...

I knew I was right. I knew it to my core. I just had to get to work to retrieve it. I keep it on my bookcase.

Does anybody else have the ORIGINAL, physical box with (4 floppies) for the PC MS-DOS game from 1992, that so easily proves my point? I didn't think so.

Who sees it? WHO SEES IT?!?

I see your bad Photoshop attempt. Case in point, the Utwig look like Thraddash. :P

(J/K - We know it was like that on the box.)

Also, I laughed when I karmalized you and you went from 99 to 101. That was hilarious! Even the forum software was trolling you.

Whoa!!! I never noticed that! And to be honest, even the Thraddash doesn't look like the Thraddash in that little screen lolol

The only thing I DID notice was that the modules... I don't think, match up to the game, right? Attitude Vernier? Melnorm Varijet? Are these things in the game? What would an Attitude Vernier even do?

Lol, 99 to 101. How is that possible? It's like the universe was trying t-... oh shit, KARMA.

Lastly: Concede, Hunam.

EDIT: Now that we both have 100+ IBN, we have to set our sights on the 3 grey orbs below Hunam's name! How do we get them?! How did Hunam manage this feat, and not either of us?! I NEED AN ANSWER!

Cuorebrave, I've been a part of the Star Control community for as long as 1999, it's a bit of a habit of mine to troll the hell out of that community and treat it with a grain of salt and keep it light :). Thanks for your clarification about the slam-dunk. I understood the basketball reference but I took it literally, thought you were going to play basketball and return afterwards.

I'm not American, remember :)

Oh and besides that, your icon kinda made it seem like you were a little kid in armor forcing the point over something trivial like how SC2 is categorized, and you were convincing no-one besides 3 argumentative posts about it. So the image clicked in my head with a litte kid wearing full plate being ignored ;) (perhaps even a dwarf paladin from WoW?). I thought it was cute as hell :D. (not offensively intended by the way, nice icon!)

A long-time Star Control fan! Shweet! So... are you admitting to being an axe-murderer? Because I'm okay with that!! Haha jk :P

And, either way, I'm glad I could broaden your horizons of American colloquialisms - I just meant "slam dunk", like right in Hunam's face, proving my point that SCII was and is an RPG!

Who sees it? WHO SEES IT?!?

Remember, though, even Paul and Fred said they were iffy about calling it an RPG. I don't remember the exact quote, but someone asked them at the 2015 postmortem what genre  they were trying to make and the response was something like "We weren't really sure what to call it. We put RPG on the box, we told the magazines it was a space opera. It was kind of a mess, because in the end, (we) feel like neither of those labels are really accurate. It's more like a point and click adventure with space ships and hot blue babes."

That's my son! I'm always painting and I love Warhammer 40K almost as much as I love Star Control. So he and I always talk about being Space Marines, so I decided to paint him as a space marine! Hope you like it :)

Guess the TinEye guys ripped the name off Mistborn.
