Developer's Log - September 2016 - Feedback

Reminder: All the screenshots are WiPs. If you hate them, remember that they will change as the game develops. If you love them, remember that they will change as the game develops.

(Can we get better ship artwork in the next update? The small picture in the PDF is very pixelated.)

The people on here who are actually software developers who've renounced the idea that they might be actively steering development here set a good example for how others should consider their role as a founder. Stardock is going to do what they think works best, as opposed to what some dedicated fans demand because they provided a fraction of sales revenue up front.

I'm not under any delusion that I'm ultimately influencing anything until Stardock makes me a job offer. They've already made clear what our financial investment has entitled us to: a significant discount on future content and a sneak peek at works in progress along with the opportunity to comment in an open forum about it and name a planet in the game. That does not equate to the privilege of being a consulting armchair developer.

I'm sure they find merit (or at least entertainment) in the posts here, but unless they're actively prompting us for specific answers -- which they really haven't since we're basically a sounding board for the early content so far -- it's pretty pointless to be concerned or uncharitable with what they've provided to us up to now. Development is way too early to be getting all worked up about anything.

Maybe that will change and they'll start interacting more, and maybe they won't. I'm guessing they're more concerned with producing a great title with every resource they have brought to bear, rather than making sure every concern is addressed on here.

^ Ok, dad. Sorry for trying to have some form of conversation going here. I promise not to twist Stardock's arm to do what I want anymore.

I, on the other hand, make no promises.

So here's the deal. Yes, I understand that I have little to no sway, and that the only thing I had the power to do was contribute $99 for the cause. However, if the game makes it out the door without the key features that I define as essential to Star Control and I sat around and did nothing, I am partially at fault. I would be the consummate pre-order poster child.

This is why you will have 18 more months to listen to my squeaky wheel complaining about local multiplayer. I want that feature. If I complain about it not being there for 18 more months and it gets included, GREAT! If it isn't, it isn't. But at least I tried.

I know you don't want to hear it over and over, Awkbird. Your karma lurking is noted. But * I * don't * care * . :)

No you're not. I hate this mindset because it leads to people doing SOMETHING when sometimes the best solution really is to do nothing and let the problem take care of itself. Apathy != supporting the opposition, no matter how you try to spin it.

This is a Jedi mind trick to get me to stop squeaking.

I'm on to you!

I think it's fine to make as much noise as you feel like making. And they're professionals who will be able to separate the useful feedback from the therapeutic grumbling. I'm sure they can tell the difference from "people who are always mad or enjoy complaining" and "grain of wisdom in something someone said that we somehow didn't consider"

and this grumbling will exist with any game so I think their program probably lets them get out ahead of it a bit, and it's nice for them that it's not public.

I'm still in favor of a "full" alien view. However, as an intermediate possibility, I could warm up to the idea of having a "zoom in" kind of full-alien view that starts as a hologram in cockpit view and then goes "full".

The downside to that approach is that it probably will only be cool the first two/three times, then not matter.

I guess it's a good idea that makes more sense for a game that is first-person to start with, like Star Citizen.

Interesting suggestion. Thanks. :)

We look at and take notes at all the feedback and suggestions that are given on the forums. While we would like to respond to each one, it can be hard sometimes but we do read what is posted.

So... The burnt orange color scheme of the GUI was universally panned by us founders... And now it has become part of our forum color scheme. Forward Progress!!!!!!!!

Or was the improvement to add UV Bluepurple and Nebula Violet?

We're still thinking about it.

I seem to be alone in liking the Amber look, must have been those Amber monitors I used to prefer before color came along.  It feels good too me because of that.

Admittedly, I preferred the amber UI in New Vegas and Fallout 4, but I also had the choice of other colors and chose it.

You can admit that you are a secret UT fan and love burnt orange. (UT = University of Texas, for those of you who don't follow sports.)

The more I look at this interface details the less I like it. It's very Retro and not in a good sense Retro. Something doesn't feel right about those curves and wasted space between UI elements.

That dirty purple background isn't making it better either. I pray Hyperspace isn't purple now...

I'll give it a week. Maybe it'll grow on me.

Oh yeah, icons/smiles are broken too.

They weren't kidding when they said they were going to clean up the forums. We're banned from showing emotion.

(And sticky post highlighting is still broken.)

For future reference, this is what the forums used to look like.

I am giving this feedback because I'm guessing that the color themes for the board are going to be used in-game.

The violet and blue clash.

The UV blue-purple is too bright.

I get sick of Burnt Orange.

Hmm... Denver Broncos, actually... Orange and Blue...  I hadn't thought of that, haha!

Still not a fan of the orange. At least it does stick out in the sea of space-game-blue.. also kind of weirded out by the purple below. I feel bad for just dropping negative feedback on color choices though, it is super hard.

So I should say, if that is what it takes to make a screenshot/video of star control origins obviously star control origins, maybe then it's ok. It certainly looks unique in the trailer (and the gameplay trailer does get me pumped, I have to say, even with the focus on planet exploration as opposed to the stuff I think of as star control right now)

Since this is my first time seeing UI development, I wonder how the color choices are decided upon?

Is forum facelift guy color blind? Just asking...

I apologize if this has been brought up regarding the shadows on planets - Why can't we have the stars in each system also be light sources? Have the planets slowly rotate and have night/day sides. Could make planet landing interesting with a night side and a light side.
