Sins v1.1 Beta Information

Sins v1.1 Beta Information

Read this before you get started!

The Sins of a Solar Empire v1.1 BETA will become available on Thursday, July 24th. As the name states, this is a BETA release and it will have bugs and other issues. Please do not install the BETA unless you're willing to accept all that testing it entails. We will be looking towards users to give us feedback on what's broken and what you'd like to see improved during the test.

The version 1.1 BETA will be available in English only and only via our Impulse client (the final release will be available in multiple languages for those who purchased the game from Kalypso).  The Impulse client is free and may be downloaded from http://www.impulsedriven.com

If you have a forum account here or on any other Stardock website, you may use it to log into Impulse.  The Impulse client should automatically see your Sins install; this assumes that you registered Sins of a Solar Empire under the same account (i.e., email address). If you did not, you will need to manually register your game in Impulse by clicking the window icon in the upper right corner (see screenshot below) or clicking on the Orb and selecting "Register a product."

Impulse Registration

At this point, you should see Sins of a Solar Empire appear under the My Games tab. If you want, you can drag and drop other games' shortcuts into Impulse to launch them from here, but that's off-topic...

As this is a BETA, you will need to tell Impulse that you want to see pre-release versions of the game. You can do this by clicking on the Orb in the upper left and selecting "Show pre-release versions."

Show pre-release versions

Impulse will now check to see if an update is available for Sins.  After we've released an update, you will see a separate Update tab in Impulse, but you may also update the game from the My Games tab. Just select Sins of a Solar Empire and click the Update button. Impulse will compare your installed files against what's available on the server and update accordingly.

Some Final Notes on the BETA

  • Impulse will show the Sins update as v1.09.  This is normal as we're working up to v1.1.  As we put out updated BETA versions, the version number will increase until we hit the final v1.1. :)
  • You will only be able to play multiplayer games with others using the v1.09 BETA (you can still play single-player games too).
  • If you run into problems or have other feedback, please post it in the Beta Feedback forum. We will be looking for reports here and if you post them elsewhere, they may be missed.
  • You can read over the Change Log here.

The Sins v1.1 BETA will be made available on Thursday, July 24.

UPDATE:  If it's taking a long time to download the Sins update, you may want to uninstall the game and reinstall the entire beta fresh. Full installs come off our Cachefly network which has a multiple servers and loads of bandwidth. ;)

I have also experienced an error attempting to reinstall Sins after uninstalling it via Impulse.

I too have followed all the instructions in this post (tried both servers, uninstalled game and uninstalled Impulse, deleted the temporary files, tried old and new download methods, ensured my internet security is all turned off (feel really happy about that one) only to have been left with no game and no patience.

When I try using the "New method" impulse just crashes back to desktop!
The old method just gives "Download Error".

I have previously been updating Object Desktop and various other bits and pieces quite happily using Impulse so know that the problem is probably not Impulse itself.

It seems to be telling me that the files it is looking for are not on your server.

I understand the issues and risks of using Beta software but you should not be giving out advice which leaves customers with no access to the full release version of the game either.

Here is my error log:

Sorry if I sounded overly angry there - just frustration.

I should also point out that I have NOT been left without the game as I have discovered that if I turn OFF the "Show pre-release versions" option I can download and install the full game - which I am now doing. A fact which other may find useful.

OK, I give up - it is a waste of time. I've spent all morning waiting on this (uninstalling, re-installing, archiving ...) and it's still not happening.

I've re-installed 1.05 and tried updating again (saw a post elsewhere saying it might work) and it still doesn't work.

I'd say Take a break for a while and just enjoy SINS 1.05. :) If you can't load the beta hopefully you'll be able to load the official 1.1 release of the game. (yah, I know... who wants to wait that long... but it's just a thought) and there really isn't THAT much of a difference between 1.05 and 1.1 that drastically changes the game or somehow makes it incredibly more 'fun'.

Cheers.

Yeh - I had to go out and watch some street jazz anyway - much calmer now thanks.
yeah I cannot get the dload to work either. I tried everything listed here too. If I try the alternate method for downloading the client crashes and I get an error. Otherwise the download just will not start.

Wow - actually managed to obtain the update.

For anyone wishing to replicate my experience:

* obtain a mild red wine hangover
* put on the latest Portishead album
* get the latest release version of Sins via Impulse
* switch Impulse to 'use alternate download mechanism' and 'show pre-release versions'
* obtain some chicken sandwiches
* attempt to update the Sins install

So I eh... finally had some time to sit down and try out the beta. I download Impulse, enter my log in info.... deal with 300 billion firewall messages until I just forfeited my privacy and turned Kaspersky off. Get Impulse running... and now have been trying to obtain an Impulse update that has been "connecting" now for a few hours. Wouldn't it have been a beneficial option to place the updated version of Impulse on line so we can download the most recent version instead of having to update?

And I can't do anything with the orb because my "registration is not validated" which seems to be tied into an updated version of Impulse which is tied into needing to update the alternative connection or something which is tied back to that orb that is tied into the Impulse update... so yeah... Um k. Thanks!

I'll wait for the retail release and official download link. I really do not want to spend my day off for a trickle download that hasn't done anything in hours. Sorry, would have loved to have beta tested the beta.

For "registration is not validated" ...it's just stupid. But you have to find that sales order e-mail that contains the serial #. Or tell impulse to e-mail you the serial numbers via a menu option.

Somehow when I unintall SINS 1.05 it loses the serial number...and thus gives you the registration not validate when trying to install SINS 1.09

I copy/pasted my serial from the email ( I forgot my login info doh!) and reactivated and it is still doing the same thing. It is stuck on "Updating Impulse...connecting" in the lower left corner and the options from the blue orb are all grayed out.

One more thing.... I am assuming ngen.exe is from stardock/impulse ( I hope!!)? I had about 17 of them running at about 5k a piece. Using XP Pro here. They went away when I started killing impulse from the task manager.

Impulse does work on XP, right?!

I have come to the conclusion this is simply a capacity problem.

I had to go out today and before I left I thought I'd have another go - without changing a thing - and lo and behold it started downloading. As luck would have it I couldn't leaven my machine on to finish the download so will have to try again tomorrow night.

First: PLEASE FIX FIREFOX COMPATIBILITY! 3.0 has been out awhile now, and we're still getting the same error. Every other site I visit that had issues fixed it WEEKS AGO!!!

Second, why did you use such a buggy delivery method as impulse to deliver the beta? I mean, Impulse looks and feels like an early alpha.

I can't get it to work properly on any of my three home computers.

I can't get it to work properly on my work computer.

NONE of my friends can get it work on any of their computers (most of whom work as network engineers).

It's not like we're all having the same problem either and that it's just limited to one bug. It seems there are a variety of bugs. For example, on just my main PC I currently can't get my GalCiv installs/updates to all work with Impulse. They won't update one of the addons but will update the others. Stardock updates them all fine with no problems at all. When it comes to SoSE, I click on the update link, it takes quite a while on my relatively new fast PC to archive the game and then nada... NOTHING HAPPENS. No error code, no message, zip. No info at all. It just doesn't work! So I am now trying the alternate method. It may be working but again I can't really tell. It tells me that it is preparing the download but it has been stuck at this stage for a ridiculously long period of time. If it's going to be long, how about a progress bar or some indicator of life?

Overall, I have to say I am very, very unimpressed with Impulse. I really don't understand why all these bugs weren't first worked out before offering it up as the only way to get the beta. I really hope the problems will be fixed or Stardock will go back to using Stardock Central because IT WORKS, unlike Impulse. If I have to keep massaging Impulse to get my updates, I may just stop buying Stardock products. It's too much work for nothing.

Nabobalis - I've sent your info on to the Impulse devs to look at.

Everyone else - please be patient as we investigate your reports.

sbradfor,

Can you please send some more details surrounding what happens when you cannot get it to work?  Did the new download mechanism work for you?  On your friends computers have they turned on the new download mechanism?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

It sounds like you have archive on update turned on, can you please turn that off, archive manually and let us know if that works for you?  Then do the update.  If it does not work send us the error log.

C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Impulse\Temporary\impulse-errorlog.txt

Thanks.

I got it - finally - which seems to suggest that, unless they have changed something at the other end, the problem is simply one of capacity - the server couldn't handle the load. Impulse could maybe be tweaked to recognise this and report on it better.

Thank you :D.

Maybe Impulse should be updated to be timed with the amount of traffic a server is receiving (Like warning a user that there may be errors with downloading if the server is using a lot of proc power or simply just traffic)

But I downloaded without a hitch :)

Waiting for update to fix the Fighter-Bomber problem. bet it could be fixed within an hour if a dev focused solely on that error ;)

New update for Impulse sorted out my crashing problem and the game is downloading fine now. Thank you :D

The download worked fine for me... just a couple things i noticed though

will there be a fix for the transparent planets problem that occurs with some older video cards? I have an ATI Radeon 9250 (256 MB) that meets minimum requirements, but have transparent planets

other things i noticed
-when ships go into hyperspace all but a couple random parts of them disappear completely
-same with when they are being built

also, what happened to player colors? are they not going to be applied to ships/structures anymore?

also, i'm not sure if i like the green for allies and the red for enemies

Mess with the options. Specifically: "Use Team Colors".

i messed with all the options that mentioned team color, and got the symbol and empire tree back to my color, but no combination of the options seems to get the color back on the ships

also, is the texture/color change on the progenitor class Advent cap ship permanent or a bug? it no longer is the light colored reflective metal it used to be but a dull black... which i'm not sure i like

Show Mesh Team Colors under Effects.

I think the Progenitor is darker than before, but it's still reflective for me.
