Sins v1.1 Beta Information

Sins v1.1 Beta Information

Read this before you get started!

The Sins of a Solar Empire v1.1 BETA will become available on Thursday, July 24th. As the name states, this is a BETA release and it will have bugs and other issues. Please do not install the BETA unless you're willing to accept all that testing it entails. We will be looking towards users to give us feedback on what's broken and what you'd like to see improved during the test.

The version 1.1 BETA will be available in English only and only via our Impulse client (the final release will be available in multiple languages for those who purchased the game from Kalypso).  The Impulse client is free and may be downloaded from http://www.impulsedriven.com

If you have a forum account here or on any other Stardock website, you may use it to log into Impulse.  The Impulse client should automatically see your Sins install; this assumes that you registered Sins of a Solar Empire under the same account (i.e., email address). If you did not, you will need to manually register your game in Impulse by clicking the window icon in the upper right corner (see screenshot below) or clicking on the Orb and selecting "Register a product."

Impulse Registration

At this point, you should see Sins of a Solar Empire appear under the My Games tab. If you want, you can drag and drop other games' shortcuts into Impulse to launch them from here, but that's off-topic...

As this is a BETA, you will need to tell Impulse that you want to see pre-release versions of the game. You can do this by clicking on the Orb in the upper left and selecting "Show pre-release versions."

Show pre-release versions

Impulse will now check to see if an update is available for Sins.  After we've released an update, you will see a separate Update tab in Impulse, but you may also update the game from the My Games tab. Just select Sins of a Solar Empire and click the Update button. Impulse will compare your installed files against what's available on the server and update accordingly.

Some Final Notes on the BETA

  • Impulse will show the Sins update as v1.09.  This is normal as we're working up to v1.1.  As we put out updated BETA versions, the version number will increase until we hit the final v1.1. :)
  • You will only be able to play multiplayer games with others using the v1.09 BETA (you can still play single-player games too).
  • If you run into problems or have other feedback, please post it in the Beta Feedback forum. We will be looking for reports here and if you post them elsewhere, they may be missed.
  • You can read over the Change Log here.

The Sins v1.1 BETA will be made available on Thursday, July 24.

UPDATE:  If it's taking a long time to download the Sins update, you may want to uninstall the game and reinstall the entire beta fresh. Full installs come off our Cachefly network which has a multiple servers and loads of bandwidth. ;)

hi! i'm updating as we speak, but i think it gets stuck during processing. I know it says:
"Processing may take several minutes", but it has been a good 30 minutes... any one have the same 'problem'. Or am I being too impatient?

edit: seems i'm not the only one :(

The Impulse client is free and may be downloaded from http://www.impulsedriven.com. (From the Beta forum)

The link on our homepage takes us to a page that doesn't exist, the link on this forum does work, notice impulsepowered from homepage and impulsedriven from this page, kinda confusing for the not so smart people.

That's a big "Doh!"  I've updated the post with the correction, thanks.  (:(

Here, it stuck for over an hour. Clicking on the Pause/Resume button sometimes "unlocks" it, but only for a couple seconds. Very disapointing.

The update server is maxed out. It may actually be faster to uninstall Sins and reinstall it completely as the full download comes off the uber-fast server.
I realize that the servers are maxed at the moment. However when I updated at 1:45 pm the whole process, including archiving took only 45 minutes. Under normal server conditions Impulse works quite well IMHO.

Yup. We're in the process (I believe) of expanding our infrastructure to improve the update speed of things, so it should get better down the line.

Just wanted to point something out. This beta update will be available only through Stardock's new Impulse platform (http://www.impulsepowered.com). (From www.sinsofasolarempire.com)Sounds like someone was thinking of Steam at the time of writing

Haha they changed it

I took your advice and unistalled the game to get connected through the uber fast servers and download the whole batch in one... big mistake: "Download error" at the very beginning.
Now i only get a download error and SINS is gone aswell. I'll wait til the primary flood of downloaders are gone. But i do have to say the "All of the games you own, with no disks to loose or other hassles." isn't true ... yet. :p

I'm unable to reproduce this issue. I would say try again and if you can post back with any additional info on how you've setup Impulse, that would help.

That happened to me too for the first few times... keep trying. It eventually worked fine.

ive had the download error twice now first at around 30% then 55% what the hell? is their anything i can try?
this is why i hate technology, if something can go wrong more often than not it will!

1. Ok i had the full install of Impulse and SINS (v1.05) installed via Impulse aswell, enabled pre-release view of updates . The 1.09.[b].038 showed up so I tried downloading and it took some time to load and then went on to download. At 51% it stalled for 20 minutes and then gave me a download error. -> Checked the forums and read that uninstalling and reinstalling would do the trick.

2. Uninstalled SINS and tried re-installing. After the Uninstall completed Impulse under My Games Tab showed me that I could install the Entire game up to 1.09.[b].038. Clicked install and it did the predownload file build. On completion it shortly says: Downloading and then Download Error immediately after.

3. Uninstalled Impulse all together and downloaded the web installer. It downloaded and installed on my system under 2 minutes, so that server is still up and has bandwidth. After download, install and startup i was prompted, that there was an Impulse Update. Update started, Impulse restarted. then Tried above step 2: re-installing SINS... same error reported.

Awesome. The only problem is that I don't have an Internet Connection at my home so I can't get the patch. Thats so cool, i'm fed up with this shit.

You can Archive using Impulse. Then transfer it with CD/Flash drive/etc.

For those having Impulse download errors, I am unable to reproduce that on any PC I've tried. I've asked the Impulse devs to pop-in and will see what they come back with (this won't happen until tomorrow).

It could be that a virus scanner or something harsh like Norton Internet Security is blocking the transfer. You can try to temporarily shut those down to see if that helps, but that's just my own guess.

ok thanks for the reply though! I will try that, tomorrow aswell. :)
installed fine for me on Impulse, sadly no time to play today :/
Reply #69 Top
Is anyone else having an issue were when Impulse attempts to update it does so however when you are prompted to restart Impulse and you click yes an error comes up reading the Impulse self-updater not intended to be run manually. Really strange and quite irritating O__O.

Okay, I've got something to try:

For those of you getting the "Download Error" issue, please try the following:

  1. Click the Orb in the upper-left.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Select Advanced Settings -> Connection.
  4. Check the box next to "Use new downloading mechanism..."
  5. Click OK

Try installing the game now and see if that resolves the issue.  Impulse uses BITS for its default downloader, so if you've disabled that service or something otherwise whacky is taking place, that may be the cause.

If this doesn't work, please PM me or post back here. Thanks! :)

Lurker - This may work for you as well. If Impulse won't let you in to try, please uninstall it and reinstall from the link below:

We're looking into this for you.

milk mclane - Please try the following:

Cancel any Sins download (assuming it's still not working) and open up Explorer to:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Impulse\Temporary\DownloadQueue

Delete all of the files and directories in there.

Do the same in:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Impulse\Temporary\ExtractedData

Next, switch to the new download system by click on the Orb in the upper-left, selecting Preferences and Connection. Check the box at the bottom to use the new downloading mechanism.

See if this works for you now. If it doesn't try rebooting your PC and trying again.  The error you posted indicates that a file is locked which is causing the problem.

Hey, I've done what you have recommended and still I can't install Sins. Impulse just crashes when I try to install it.

...From the looks of things (and my internet issues and stuff) I think I'm going to pass on the beta this time. My internet is kinda slow anyways...I know its kinda early but do you know when the final version will be out?
