No, most Scholorships come from the government

no...
only the big competition ones are funded in such, and thats nothing compared to the innumerable privately funded scholarships
that is why for most of them you need a social security number

thats so that they can register it with the government (they hold it w/ the gov)

for instance every college that hands out a scholarship. not even a full one.

theres a college that pays for EVERY LAST ONE OF ITS ACCEPTED STUDENTS. this comes from a donation pile in which the private college sets aside a fund that alumnis donate to.

For private colloges yes, for public colleges no.

And guess which one there are more of?

even public colleges have private funds

and even then, the private funds are hundreds times more numerous and larger than the public ones! the government DOES help, undeniably. but not nearly as much as you like to think.

Um, no. See not that many people earn scholorships in the first place, some have to seek out student loans. Sure you may say, well then they are getting money from the bank, and the bank has nothing to do with the government. Well it does. The government sets interest and loan rates, and they purposely keep student loan rates very low.

And there is a lot more money going in from the government then from private funds. Why? Because people are selfish, they dont give a rats behind about who goes to the college after them. Sure there are the do-gooders and the welconectors, and the powerhungry. But, in the end its the government that contributes out of the sheer hope for a better tomorrow.

student loans aren't gifts. they come with payback (the government MAKES money, duh. not a free ride)
and the people who make scholarships get most of the money from private funds, like I said.
The government sets interest and loan rates, and they purposely keep student loan rates very low.

but there are rates, makes it capitalism.
and guess what? our education system proves that it works.
Because people are selfish, they dont give a rats behind about who goes to the college after them

altruism. read about it before making a wrong post like this.
(a FREE hint! I'm talking reciprocal altruism and people's kids)
But, in the end its the government that contributes out of the sheer hope for a better tomorrow.

...
by not paying for a massive amount of kids education? yes true.
but the funds stemming from government are small. not nearly as big as you say they are, let alone as big as sweden's, denmark's greenland's etc.
Yes, they are smaller, because one we are spending money on a war(duh) and two we are as socialistic. Paying for everything would ruin laize feir(sp?).
we are only socialist enough to counter the late 1800's type of system. but not spoiling as bad as modern day north Europe.
Yes, they are smaller, because one we are spending money on a war(duh

that war is pocket change.
and again, what does outside costs have to do with this?

I'm back

for a good view of how effective school systems are, look here:
http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/1/60/34002216.pdf

and, for those wanting a simple table, about what people THINK of their schools check here:
http://pisaweb.acer.edu.au/oecd_2003/oecd_pisa_data_s2.ph

According to that, US scores below average on nearly everything, even though you have "the top 5 schools" your 95th percentile sucks.

An above average number of US students fall into category 1-4 (from 0-6) which translates roughly into: Not a lot of smart people, but not as many idiots as one would think when watching the news.

infact, taking a quick glance over the tables, Netherlands, Denmark, france and germany have higher averages on Math, reading and problem solving.

that war is pocket change.

I wouldn't call a military budget of 532.8 Billion out of 2800 billion pocket change.
That's a whopping 19% and makes up the largest part of your national budget. (i know not all of it is going to the war)

Also, here in the Netherlands, The government pays for (depending on your income) almost all of your education, not out of altruism, not out of hope for tomorrow, but for the simple fact that people with a higher education make more money and thus pay more taxes. simple really.

we are only socialist enough to counter the late 1800's type of system. but not spoiling as bad as modern day north Europe.

ahh yes, which is why you have such a great healthcare system, and a marvelous social services.

Nothing wrong with a bit of nationalism but give credit where it is due. It might be true that US education has a higher "Knowledge per dollar" rating then education over here, but you can't really measure it like that. My total education might cost the government a shipload of money, but I'll pay it all back in taxes. (rather not, but hey, someone's got to maintain the roads and make sure people don't get huge debts in hospitals, or can't afford to retire.)

but we pay almost 50% in taxes

We (UK) don't pay that much, however we have Council Tax, Income Tax, Road Tax, Car Tax, 4x4 tax, passport tax, airline tax, travel tax, dole tax etc etc.

And where does all the money go. The army sucks, the Navy sucks, the RAF sucks, the NHS sucks and John Prescott is fat, 'nuff said.

US scores below average on nearly everything

Scores here are sliding rapidly as well, so its not an isolated incident (I blame Chernobyl scrambling our (well not mine, I'm a smart cookie   )brains)

laize feir(sp?).

I think its Laissez faire (don't take my word for it, I ditched French ASAP)

Math

It's mathS lol

which is why you have such a great healthcare system, and a marvelous social services.

I think he may have you there Schem (I take the above to be sarcasm), Europe (especially the UK, sorry guys, fact(that said the NHS is still sorely overstretched)) does have exceptional (and mostly free) healthcare. I have no doubt that US medicine is good, but it is not free, which I think healthcare should be.

I KNOW you didnt read that thing.

I'm back

WHEN was that anyway???
what was I even refering to?
I wouldn't call a military budget of 532.8 Billion out of 2800 billion pocket change

you're European
completely uncalled for. but so true...

to quote CSI: Only the truly powerful have the luxury to relinquish their power.
infact, taking a quick glance over the tables, Netherlands, Denmark, france and germany have higher averages on Math, reading and problem solving

well when I get that link up I'll point out the innumerable flaws.
lets start with the fact of very different testing systems (ours are more rigorous)
Also, here in the Netherlands, The government pays for (depending on your income) almost all of your education, not out of altruism, not out of hope for tomorrow, but for the simple fact that people with a higher education make more money and thus pay more taxes. simple really

taxing 80% also makes you pay more taxes!
the problem with that setup is that you are getting a very gov-funded edu system (ID anyone?) ((I meant intelligent design, not IDs)). from that you get corruption, bad education etc.
and besides, capitalism has proven to be a bit better for taxation purposes, so why not take that road?
ahh yes, which is why you have such a great healthcare system, and a marvelous social services.

no, its why I have 5 TVs, 4 computers (a new one on the way!) and a house bigger than some city buildings.
of course, I'm middle class.
"Knowledge per dollar"

its also quite obviously better.
I mean come on. Europe has a nice system (kudos to where its deserved) but we still outcompete them. (I'm ignoring such things as cold fusion thank you)
Nothing wrong with a bit of nationalism but give credit where it is due

I'm the last person to say I'm objective. but I know when I'm going beyond firm ground, and I'm perfectly fine where I am

its not that Europes system is bad, its just not as good.
We (UK) don't pay that much, however we have Council Tax, Income Tax, Road Tax, Car Tax, 4x4 tax, passport tax, airline tax, travel tax, dole tax etc etc.

And where does all the money go. The army sucks, the Navy sucks, the RAF sucks, the NHS sucks and John Prescott is fat, 'nuff said.

love it. absolutely love how you put it
I think its Laissez faire

yup.
I think he may have you there Schem (I take the above to be sarcasm), Europe (especially the UK, sorry guys, fact(that said the NHS is still sorely overstretched)) does have exceptional (and mostly free) healthcare. I have no doubt that US medicine is good, but it is not free, which I think healthcare should be

US healthcare is shitty.
but when do you need it? 5 times out of your life? guess what.
I prefer to pay less for it and have a shitty system that I use rather than pay constantly (and a lot) for something I dont use.
I prefer to have my collosal house (you should see my Aunt's...)
Both "math" and "maths" are correct. I think it's chernobyl messing with you again.

yeah.

You got us there, the NHS could use a little more government funding than its getting, we're paying so much for it only because they're putting so little in. Currently a lot of tax money is going to lining the nations pockets (or the war, but yes, that is small change, even for a European country   ), we literally have billions, just sitting there doing nothing, what the frack (BSG thank you very much) are we saving for, a rainy day? Prescott must want a hot tub installed in Number 11 (he's the deputy PM, and he has a bigger house than the Prime Minister and a DOZEN Jags, and he finds time to carry on a torrid affair with his secretary).

We know the money can't be going to the "British Space Programme" (Beagle 2, feel free to laugh)

collosal house
