Quantum computer to debut next week

you think its for real this time?
But if it is, we are gonna see some games in virtual reality in every home in about 20 years maybe?

Would love to attend, buut its like 10.000km

I'm praying to god that it comes through. but like one of the guys said, this is like the promise of cold fusion, so my hopes aren't high.

and even if it does work the system would probably be too big to keep in house anyway (think the first computers...)
and it's cost would be through the roof (although its return would be massive for big companies)
and think about tech support! you'd need a theoretical physicist just to fix your computer...

its a nice idea but read carefully, this computer will not be an all purpose computer, it is only able to solve certain problems it is designed for, like the first computer was designed for simple addition and subtraction problems

exactly like the first vacum tube computers, its bound to be huge and clunky and not very wide in terms of operating.

but damn, the math community will be jumping up and down for this. you'dd probably be able to get several trillion places of pi in a matter of minutes !!!

i can already see it being used for SETI...they are always complaining they need more computing power

I did quite a bit of reading on this thing. Apparently this is more of a proof-of-concept than anything else. It is pretty narrow in its abilities and cannot compete (in terms of speed) with the more conventional methods that are currently applied to the kinds of problems that it is designed to solve. But the company that makes it has plans to be up to over 1000 qubits within a year vs the 16 qubits in this model (a qubit is a quantum bit) and that kind of system WILL be much faster than anything out there today.

Exciting stuff.

obviously. they aren't going to make a 1000 qubit for a demonstration...

of course in 20 or so years (if this works) we will be working with many more, much smaller qubits. probably in the 50,000 range. in that case you could probably run games that create entire life sized worlds and (as long as some of it is streamlined) not have that big of a problem.

well a 1000 qubit computer wont be seen for a long time due to my understanding. Currently they can only read 16 qubits because the more atoms that are used the harder it is to read the direction of the electrons going aroudn the atom (electrons going clockwise = On, electrons going counter clockwise = off) this is because of hte increasing clutterness i beleive. So hopefully as the technology progresses reading more atoms thus increasing qubits will occur. But for now 16 qubits is all that is going to happen And i doubt that 1000 qubits will occur within the year that may be overestimating, im thinking maybe between 30-50 or even 100.

The best thing that could happen is that someone (other than microsoft) creates an operating system for a quantum computer, then ill be happy .

actually the big problem with qubits so far is information and opperation degregation

they are currently working on ways to keep the info from collapsing as they try to read it, and thats a difficult battle.

see, if you let the qubits interact with the world in any way they collapse from their multiple forms into a single form, therefore breaking their symmetry and causing the system to stop working in multiple dimensions.
additionally the info that comes out of the machine is unstable. if you try to read it breaks down, so they're currently working on ways to sidestep this, or at least make it slow enough for us to recieve the info.
also the current system they are using for this (AQT I believe) is very specified for certian problems and equation types, so it wont be running video games *yet*, although the math and science communities will be overjoyed.

Ok, here is my best go at an analogy for this operation:

Is everyone familiar with the monkey's, keyboards and shakespeare concept? heres a rundown:

if you have 10 monkeys bashing randomly at keys on a keyboard for a million years you will eventually come out with all of shakespeare's works (and supposedly many other people's to)

qubits work under the same concept, by running all states of "on" "off" and in between simultaneously you come out with EVERY possible combonation, ones that work are selected and ones that aren't are deleted and forgotten.
the system works under brute force, rather than say the intelligent elegance of data disection.

LMAO monkey's

lol its like developers, they keep pressing alot of keys, for a long time, and suddenly they get something to work

So theres a need for another machine to tell what is right and what is wrong? and for the storage data, theres gonna be some need for something there too

I'm not an engineer, I barely have a grasp on the basics of the physics, so go question someone with more credentials.

Good, good!!

You will be my first in command, I will give you Europe.

"raises and bows for The Great Emperor" thank you my master.
I will make you proud. And kill all those who oppose us.

where the HELL did this come from...

this is like when you pause a conversation and say "how the hell did we get here..." except that there isn't a good explanation this time.

I meant clear the way for our computer overlords, just to add a bit of cynical humor. But, the fact that Multianna replied in such an flattering and unexpected way made me want to play along. And you cant say you dont want a piece of the world Schem, I am sure i can let you rule Australia, or Antartica. Maybe I will pencil you in for that deep space exploration program to the center of the galaxy.

And Multianna, you better not fail me. Or you will witness the full power of this fully operational battle station!!
does Antartica have a secret super-powerful atlantian anti-orbital defense cannon?
no?
blah, like I'd want a barren piece of frozen rock.

"looks at Schematicsninja , then looks at The Great Emperor " yes my master, send him to his dea... erm to the middle of the galaxy.. yes.. yesss.

Devout supporter of democracy and all things of scientific advancement versus

The delusional poster and his insane sidekick
Reply #21 Top
Delusional? really now?

I prefer visionary or radical, they sound so much better. I am sure Multianna is not insane, just loyal

As for you Schem, your democratic ways will lead you to beuracracy and red tape. I mean you dont want Antartica, but you want red tape.

And who says I am not for scientific advancement? Thats why I am sending you to one of those places, to see the effects deep space voyage/frozen barens has on your confident ways. The deep space thing is more to find out whether or not there is a black hole in the center of the galaxy, your recent thread tempted my interests.

P.S. the cannon is being constructed.
