wow people are really harsh here. I was a big SC1 fan before SC2 came out. It's the reason I played SC2. I've played almost every 4x space game trying to reclaim some of that magic. I agree that there are many options for that already, but I'd happily take a 4x game in the starcon universe a year after a great adventure game in the starcon universe. and I'd rather have it as expansion content (and a whole new game mode is some great DLC!) than having to buy a complete

Sad to have been away as well. My pain in my hands turned out to not just be repetitive stress injury, but Ehlers-Danlos syndrome related. So I've been in physical therapy and not really playing much PC games or typing on computers. I can use a controller easier for some reason, but not long stretches of time. I'm still very excited about the game and being a founder, but sorry I haven't been able to participate as much it would be cool to get email upda
Will Stardock promote certain fan-generated content if it meets a threshold of quality like Blizzard does on Battle.net or Valve does on Steam Workshop, or will the community be more self-governing and curated by the users alone? I'd imagine something will separate the wheat from the chaff, just don't know what form it will take.
I was actually wondering (maybe I missed it somewhere) if it would be steam wor
My PC is really good. The best. Absolutely incredible. I make the best PCs. Everyone knows it. You know it. I know it. It's really something.
Maybe I missed this being talked about before, but will Planetary exploration also result in plot stuff? Like will I find aliens to talk to on the surface? Secret facilities? Or maybe even aliens that aren't space fairing?
Happy new year! I'm glad you guys are so committed to making Star Control open and accessible. I think it would have taken some hubris to believe that only one company could make 'the best star control' when that company doesn't include the original creators - this way really is the best way. I'm excited to play the Stardock story and excited to play the remake of 2 that will come in the engine, and excited to play anything else epic people come up with.
I think your ship idea makes sense hard sci fi wise, but I'm not sure it's needed for Star Control. The ships being kind of a representation of the aliens directly reads easier for remembering what you're fighting and is kind of "cuter" too. I thought the ships in endless space for example kind of made sense but didn't really have as much personality. I'm more concerned with playful representation than science logic personally.
wow, I missed a lot of discussion over the holiday! Hope everyone had a good one! Some general points (mostly agreements at this point): - I also think Anomalies was one of my favorite parts of the game, especially when they were involved in the plot or if they could start new plots. Or even be new species. But I also like the idea of some of them being relatively benign and maybe the ship upgrade parts or even just "turns out it's nothings" are those.
It feels hard to exactly explain why, but the wildstar look feels more 'comic booky' / sunday animation / WoWish. Not that I dislike it for what it is, and not that I think their artist couldn't work more towards the SC house style we've seen, but I think that particular kind of cartoony reminds me a bit much of the hyper 'action show' cartoons. I'd like SC to feel a bit more mellow/explorative even if individual alien conversations can be hyper/crazy a little bit.
It does seem a bit faster :)
I feel like it should be fine / there should be an option for it, since aren't they doing an xbox release?
or, you know, it could just literally be poop, sentient or not haha. Didn't they throw refuse over the walls in old sieges? Not like it's a new idea. hahaha
I'm not sure how to say I want a poop ship without it sounding like I'm saying I want a poop ship, but on the "aliens are so weird and things that are normal to them are disgusting to us" level I think it would be pretty great if there was a ship made by alien excrement (call it spider web style stuff if you want) and a weird/funny plot point is us realizing they are referring to pooping their ships out at some point in a conversation. That's my useful feedback. You're welcome
I think those should all be options, for you space war criminals out there. I think having the options makes my decision to not indulge in them feel meaningful, and not just default hehehe
My issue with NMS was actually not the procedural generation. It had clunky interface (holding down a mouse click to select something?? what?), the combat didn't feel snappy and fun, and it took way too much grinding to keep exploring. The exploring itself was fun, but didn't feel worth it. With the plot driving things forward in Star Control, even if everything else was from NMS I would still play it - but it wouldn't be Star Control, obviously. I t
Probably some ships will only have "one" crew, technically - a single pilot fighter, or an organic vessel, an integrated intelligent computer, or so on. The main thing for me is I like the sense of personality and urgency you get from worrying about an intelligent being dying. You want to save them, and use it differently than when it just feels like a "resource" to manage.
Elite: Dangerous really straddles the line between "boring" and "well if i fuck it up, this totally destroys my ship or costs me hundreds of credits STRESSFUL" - but honestly the biggest thing about it is it's absolutely beautiful and crazy to play with a virtual reality headset. Like, holy shit. But it's also SO FAR from what I want with this game, which is basically "TALK TO ALIENS, PLOT PLOT PLOT." Elite is almost the opposite of that, and basically the only thing uniting them is S
Just as a small note, my feeling about the "layers on top of each other" description was that it was always one limited by the expressions of pitiful human language and understanding. So if petals is just another way to "say" it, then that's fine. It doesn't really feel conflicting to me. Also, "O rz space, Truespace, Hyperspace and Quasispace" etc aren't actually descriptions of parallel universes either, they seem to be existing within one unive
Haha, I admit that I slowed down on posting and kind of stay out of threads sometimes because it just seems a little overwhelming to get into. Not that I feel like I'm worried about getting attacked or anything like that (I've got a thick skin lol) just that it feels tiring trying to read some of the longer/angrier rants. I want to give good (and often critical!) feedback, but am starting to feel a little old for anything that feels close to a flame war haha
I dislike the number overlay, and don't think it accomplishes the sense of feel that we're looking for. Little people or little dots was "silly" but really felt like each thing was an individual. The compromise that seems "ok if not great" for me, is having the bar separated into sections that each represent one crew member.
Especially scientifically implausible! I think Star Control is the place to be humorously pushing the boundaries of "what is life" and "what can intelligence arrive out of?" None of the dreary only human, or only human + AI, etc realities in "hard sci fi" these days. what a bore.
I do like the idea of events, discoveries, etc, resulting in crew loss and I also (while it may make things a lot more difficult) kind of like the idea of having them not be entirely just "health" in terms of replacing. Like the bonuses you mentioned for finding lifepods etc. I think there should also be bonuses for if you decide to spare other ships, diplomatic stuff, etc. Maybe you can inspire people to join you in conversation even if you don't get another
Yeah, I mentioned this in another thread somewhere, but it's important enough to me to chime in again. Ron hit it right on the nose - the dots made each crew member feel valuable. I disliked letting any die at any time for any reason. And was pretty impressed/weirded out by the doog.
I think in the first endless space I always skipped the combat as well. I forgot that there even was a way to see it
