Well, to answer the actual OP: UQM had about 3,800 astral bodies in total, including moons and gas giants. So SCO is less at this point, but if 20-30 are being added daily on average as claimed, then it could easily be over 4,000 by the time of release. Don't forget this is just the first chapter ... there will be even more areas of the universe to explore in future expansions.

+1 for Viewpoint 2. Would love to be able to support Paul and Fred pursuing their own project, but it is a struggle to justify defending them at this point and if I'm being completely honest, not interested in another 25 years of sailor's promises from them. Their attempts to derail SCO with something that doesn't exist and likely never will exist are deplorable. And on a free Squarespace website to boot, using assets which they do not own. There are fans of the story out ther

Alright, sure. That is terrific, but user created content being shared wasn't the premise...
If you guys would like your alien in the game, we are looking for 512x512 portraits. Just post them as PNGs and how you'd like credit and I'll find a place for them if I can.
Are these submissions going to just be inserted into portions of the campaign as NPCs then? Is there some kind of standard Stardock will apply to them to maintain consistency with the look of the game?<

So... say we have a neat alien idea but aren't as talented as the artists over at Stardock. Will you guys be taking submissions or sketches and turning them into full thumbnail illustrations to make them look cohesive with the rest of the game's design? I would imagine having so many different alien portrait art styles would seem a little strange, no?

Sorry but I feel like I totally missed this detail about contributing an alien portrait to the game. I had not heard of this yet. I thought we were getting the opportunity to name a planet and maybe the chance at having ship submissions included in the game if they are clever enough. I've seen pretty much all the news updates posted here but nothing about this. Can you fill us in a little more?

I'd also like to offer the suggestion of some reference to silicoid and mycological races as tribute. Maybe they aren't specifically the Chenjesu or Mycon, perhaps primitive offshoots that never reached starfaring capability. Even the Chenjesu/Chmmr admitted to the fact that their evolution was some kind of fluke, so maybe in this universe, that fluke didn't occur and they remained terrestrial. It would be a nice nod to see them even if they don't make make an appearance as a full-fle

Or at least they were months ago before they stopped. Maybe they stopped because they're so busy working on that game! Would love to see, if not appearances, at least references to all of them. Maybe some worlds could be inhabited by custom critters as inside references too. If these are all alternate universes, we can see glimpses of races if they had remained primitive critters instead of evolving to the state we’re most familiar with. Maybe we visit the Gorno system and there is a race of fierce marsupial critters on the surface who practice a very primitive form of martial arts and ritu

I'm sure that with everything going on right now about the the legal rights to the intellectual property and how Stardock plans to incorporate them, this may be totally reworked, but I do remember a lot of the original details that Paul Reiche wrote about the back story of Earth's introduction into the conflict. If you revisit the original 1990 game manual for SC1, there is a narrative excerpt of Earth’s entry into the Alliance of Free Stars. Aside from that, there wasn’t

There were several versions of a large format physical printed folding map for SC2. I would not say that any of them contained outright spoilers, however the one that came with the "Role Playing Resource Guide" (hint book) was a black and white line drawing map with subtle clues about star systems of significance which were highlighted only as places of interest that you knew about from the start, but it did not tell you what secrets they contained. It did contain the coordinates of Quasispac

The discussion about fostering community involvement to cooperatively figure out things is nice to hear. Back in the day, all we had were dialup boards, usenet threads, and the very beginnings of online discussion threads to talk about gaming strategies and secrets. One of the really memorable things about SC2 was that Paul and Fred wrote their own hint book, which was really just a collection of clues to the biggest mysteries rather than an outright walkthrough. If you really wanted

Mysteries. The fact that we never got answers to so many things is why we still discuss them after 25 years. SC3 tried to answer a bunch of stuff without introducing any tempting new secrets to explore. Diversity of alien personalities. Never knew what to expect and they also frequently had distinct character arcs. Adventure with a sense of humor. So many games are overly dramatic without any levity. Unique musical themes. Fun to listen to for several minu

All good points I agree with. I'd like to add a few thoughts too.
Descriptions of what each weapon does; I'm still trying to figure out one of two of 'em. For example, the Gravity Wave; I haven't been able to find a use for that yet.
Yes, it is difficult to tell what's what. I have a feeling this is a work in progress though; weapons all have some descriptive detail now and I'd like to think mounts and other items eventually will too.
The

Let's not assume what players will or won't do. Some may visit for ten seconds to get one mineral deposit. Some will want to thoroughly explore. Seen speed runs where landings are made just for exotics and radioactives. I used to play that way too. Doesn't mean everyone else is going to. There were many lander upgrades in SC2. When you first start out, they are vulnerable, slow, and can't carry much. It would be nice to see that carried forward with new dynamics. If players tire of be

I concur with veraxus and seldon on most of those points about scale and barriers. Making the lander smaller (and slower) would go a long way towards assuaging a lot of the concerns about scale. If planet sizes are not going to change, I think it would be an easy and acceptable compromise to just make the lander smaller. And I don't just mean a little smaller, probably a lot. Changes in elevation should probably also be legitimate obstacles un
