I'm just curious; will the planets be hex based also?

YES. This is the thinking that makes me happy. And mad at a lot of 4X games. So many games want to reduce the amount of micromanaging, so many people who claim to like 4X games call adding things like this "feature creep", as if doing anything but Extermination is undesirable.
Mine gas giants like ME3 , mine planetary rings, allow to build specialized buildings on moons according to their types and your tech, asteroid belt mining, GYARK (heart attack).............
I think what the OP meant by ""no "unit" region"" is that you could click on any small area and the ship or whatever would go to that very precise position, even if it doesn't line up perfectly with the grid. With hexes it gives off the impression that you will have to click on a hex and the object will have to fit within that hex area, dead center. I think he means that you lose the ability to place things exactly the way you want when you have to stick to the hex setup.
Choice is always better. If people use an "inferior" service, then let the people enjoy their "inferior" service. Seeing how it won't prevent anyone else from enjoying their game their way.
I thing random events should stay, and even be on a macro level. It would be cool if, say, you could be able to click on a planet, talk to the Governor, and deal with individual planet events. "the workers in your Science sector are protesting because they feel they aren't getting paid enough." You then have multiple choices on how to deal with it, like the alignment choices when you land on a planet. Dealing with those individual planet events could affect your alignment as well as give
Small companies doing their own thing is an interesting idea, until you run into a person like me who needs to control EVERYTHING. How about a Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary going at the same time, with secondary and tertiary being researched at lower rates? A tech could be like, Lasers. You research to unlock it, and then if you want you could go on to the next tech in the list if you want to speed through it. Of course, you'll miss out on the applications like laser surg
