I agree about Dominions 3 being up there. I have loved Solo play for years and do not expert to ever consider myself an expert player for multiplay. Incredibly deep. The game supports bigger maps, and more players at once, than I have ever seen any game of it actually play. Dom3 is more multiplayer. CoE3 is more solo. One of the biggest problems I see with peoples opinions of CoE3 is that they come from Dom3ers. :) The MP in CoE3 sucks and the randoms in the game can kill you. But I love the CoE3 for the smarter more individual AIs, the team play (particularly teaming with AIs), the ability to create downloadable scenarios that include things like adding your own quests, lairs, worldwide events, missions, rewards Either way, both games are more game than anyo

Dom3 with better UI and less micromanagement? The Dom3 devs are now concentrated on their new game "Conquest of Elysium 3" which is Dom3 which plays faster, better UI, and much less micromanagement. This game has lasted years on my machines. I have paid as much for prettier games that didnt last a month on my machine. Especially irritating if Ifind a killer walk-thru is posted somewhere right after I buy the game. Dom3 has been out for years and the forums are still arguing strongest/weakest, tactics, etc. And no cheats, no backdoors. Dom3 had 63 nations (now 72 in the patched game). Dominions 3 is now on Desura for $30 A new DEMO is available for Linux and Windows and Mac OSX. The new demo is caught up on all of the patched changes to the game. Multiplayer games tend to want to decide a winner based on strategy and tactics. Solo games are boring without some chaos and random luck thrown in. MPers hate being knocked out or having a game decided by a luck event. Soloists hate being limited to strategy vs an AI which usually sucks. Its hard to mix the two equally. Some games might have switches for toning down the random luck of map placement, or random events, but usually not to a complete on/off level so games

They dont have to agree on the price. They are different publishers. And so far, it seems that the whole things is an experiment in "lets try it the way the players complained about with the Dom3 prices". We will have to see if it wins.

Are there any Scenario or Campaign writers out there? This game has scenario commands. But the previous Illwinter game was mostly just modding commands. So the player base is a lot of modders, and not much for writing scenarios or campaigns. I would REALLY like to see more downloadable solo-play stuff with creative quests and worldwide events available.

Yes the focus is flip-flopped on CoE3. MP is possible but in Dom3 choices were made for MP over Solo, and in CoE3 some obvious choices were made favoring Solo over MP. And the AI is excellent. In Dom3 there was one general AI trying to play all of those very unique nations. In CoE3 each nation has its own AI and plays the nation specifically to its strengths and weaknesses. There are now screenshots, a video, and two AAR's of running games (some forums call them LPs). Its definitely what I would call Dom3-lite. It plays much quicker with much less micromanagement. The AI is MUCH better (a separate one for each nation). I think its going to be popular as a blitz game in IRC channels and Chat rooms. Its more solo play than Dom3 is. I also wont be playing but Id like to make a couple points. CBM 1.84 has 13,873 mod commands in it. It definitely changes the game drastically. I dont agree that it "fixes" or "balances" the game (actually neither do its developers anymore). But it has become an interesting way to change the game by shutting down tactics they feel are overused. Personally, Id get tired of Vanilla first. CBM is only used on about half of the games I see. On the one hand its simple to switch servers. Its done all the time. the server just zips up the entire game directory and sends it in an email. Its usually not very big. The other severs unzips it and runs it. Many servers offer to email the game zip to whoever is running the game automatically every turn so that they can move if the server loses connection. Interesting. The points made are right on BUT... Ive played Dom3 for years and play almost entirely SP. Not in vanilla mode anymore but with maps and mods and 3rd party programs designed to making the AI better. Not fantastic of course but then for someone that likes SP I dont think any game is. MP will always provide more of a challenge. If the SP is rated against MP then Id agree, but if its SP against other SP games then personally I still consider Dom3 to provide enough to bring the price
