Call me a purist, but there's enough games out there with those RTS elements. I can go play Civ 5 or Sins, or one of the other 500 clones if I want colonies. Not that there's anything wrong with those, or a strategic game couldn't be added/modded on later. Just exploration, dialogue, and adventure for me please. That's all SC2 needed.

Meh, I was perfectly happy NOT managing colonies in SC2. I want to explore, not baby sit
The crew-member aspect could definitely be fleshed out a lot more. Each member really only had one stat that effected their job, and it could easily be maxed out early on. It would be cool to add crew members from the different alien races you meet or ally with. One thing that bugged me about SCII was the alliances. They usually involved "here's the design to our ship, now leave us alone for the rest of the game". If you could incorporate the other races as crew members, or escort ships t
(Started this topic in the UQM forums, but I figured it would make sense to post here as well.) Well, after hearing a ton of references to "Starflight", and how it was a "spiritual successor" to SCII, I finally decided to give it a try. I decided on the Sega Genesis port, since that had the most "updated" graphics and controls, and there's plenty of emulators available for PC and Android. You definitely can see the similarities, the first time you leave your home syste
Anything other than top down would probably kill a lot of the magic. I think there's enough 3D Open World space shooters out there, which would make a new SC harder to stand out. That doesn't mean they can't add the occasional 3d action sequences though. To expand on Alv's idea, you could have your escorts assist in more active ways in "1v1". E.g., You could call in a Yehat or Utwig "shield run", to clear a lane of projectiles. Launch a nuke from a rearwa
Yes.
Add long as we can blame the 2 timelines on Spock.
At the very least, it would be cool if you could send other fleets or tasks forces off on missions. Even if it's just salvaging or scouting missions.
Never thought of it in those terms, but that makes perfect sense. With the ship-selection and everything. Nice post, NstormRider. I like a lot of the other ideas your presented. The combat could remain 1v1, but throw in the occasional "fleet battle", or other special events, just to shake things up.
I say jettison because it's not that good. The reboot angle just gives a good excuse. I don't think space melee is a critical part of SC definitely not more important then exploration and dialog. Also if we can't fit multiple ships into melee that just sounds like another reason to switch to something else. My two cents.
The more time you spend with Super Melee, or any UQM combat, the more you see th

Personally I'd be happy continuing the top-down view. (with more than 16 directions) :) One cool improvement would be the ability to have multi-ship battles. Maybe you control your flagship, and choose one wing-man to take into each battle. Or each race has a range of ships, from fighters to cruisers, and you control the flagship, while the other ships around you battle it out. One thing that always bugged me about SCII, was you never felt like a giant fleet of allied races, with
As others have voiced, any of the races that were mentioned casually in SCII would be cool. Some of the Sentient Milieu. Maybe some races that have survived or ran away from the Kohr Ah or Kher Zha (spelling aside). Maybe a race that's invisible to the human eye, or a race that's all platypus's. Platypie?
Forgot to mention, you can also find UQM in the Google Play Market for Android. :-)
Would like to add, Ur-Masters is a fan made, FREE remake of Star Control 2, designed to run on modern computers. It also adds features like voiceovers and improved options from the 3DO version. As SC2 was arguably the best game in the series, definitely check that out first. Be sure to download the voices and remixes, when prompted by the installer. There's also an UQM HD version, that cranks up the graphics and adds other features. It's currently in alpha, but completely play
I hope they consider contacting or hiring the developers of UQM, UQM HD, and/or Project 6014.
