Yes, I do. For the early designs where you have no options anyway. A no engine design with the max guns is fine for system defense. Once I start planing offense, I design ships myself. Speed for interceptors and commerce raiders, heavy defenses and Fleet Modules for the command carriers, etcetera.

Yes. At least for an early war, as an Iconian, you can forego defense and concentrate on your hull modules instead. (Got caught out by the neighbors and so had to research better weapons instead of armor. Since I had many of the HP upgrades, I just soaked the damage and outlasted them instead. Once I got armor as well, my Iconians just crushed them.)
Could be. Dungeon Keeper did this. Certain bonus levels could only be accessed on a date with a full moon.
It's funny, the OP mentions this resolution, which in 40+ games I've never seen, and as soon as he does, it show up in my current game. It's also like the alighnment change event: hadn't seen it before and now it is coming up in back to back games for me.
The same thing has happened to me, and I resorted to war as well. I guess it is part of the random events, but I don't know. Still, it doesn't always happen since I did win the last two games through influence. Sometime you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.
I like the Altarians, they gain techs fast. However, their military bonuses are usually in defense, not offense. While the Iconians soak the damage with their unusually tough ships, the Altarians avoid getting hit. Still, if your race is higher tech than the enemy, it doesn't matter if you have special weapons or not. Oh, when playing with the Altarian tech tree, who have to choose good: nearly all their race-specific perks are good-only
When you say strongest ships, do you mean offense, defense, or durability (hit points)? The Iconians have a number of unique techs that give them the highest HP ships and high repair rates, but their weapon techs are weak. Generally, if an Iconian ship isn't killed outright, it will be back with the self-regeneration techs. The Drengin get a bonus in research weapons techs, and if they choose Evil with
Thanks for the answer: I knew it would be messy, but I didn't expect it to be this messy! As regards Influence starbases, it appears Influence is recalculated every time a new module is added. In my current game, I'm having an influence war with the Iconians and the Korx are the victims. The I-base next to Korx at first did not have noticable effect, but once I added the +60 modules suddenly the border
Just a few Influence-related questions. 1. In the manual, we are told what things effect influence, but not exactly how, or in what proportion. Has anyone found actual formulas for this, and if so, what are they? 2. What is more important in influence generation, having a large population on a planet, or a small population with lots of Cultural Exchange Centers (CEC hereafter)? (Generally, I'd want a 14 pop planet deep in foreign territory, just so it has the
Also being intrigued by the challenge, I took it up. I had played Iconians before, but only twice, and that was some time ago and I couldn't really remember how they worked. After playing them again, I am beginning to think they are not meant for a fast start, but are meant to claw their way from behind, which makes for a slow game. [Won by Tech victory at 7 years, 2 m, 4 wks at Tough.] My settings were slightly different than the OP's. Tough, Huge M

Just to clarify, there is no relation with the population of a planet and the revenue generated by Markets, Banks, Stock Markets et al? So a planet which caps out at 8 billion will produce the same revenue as your capital at 16 billion, assuming both have the exact same number of Stock Markets? So would I be better off using the PQ 29 world to make a Manufacturing capital planet which can produce Massi

In a large galaxy, I usually have at least 5 fast survey ships gathering them up. The standby messages get annoying, but it's worth it.
Correction. The survey modules is available at the first tier of Sensors.

Being new to the franchise, I cannot be certain, but I recall reading elsewhere in the forum that was removed or disabled in TA/Ultimate. The poster was a long-time player who wanted the old invasion screen brought back.
This won't help you for DL, but as GW Swicord mentioned, the option to build old improvements was added in a later expansion. Yes, you are credited the cost of the older building when upgrading, even if it is not related. (On my Research worlds, I upgrade the Recruitment Center to a Neutrality Learning Center once
When the ethical dilemmas occur, does the game actually keep track of your choice on a sliding scale? I'm playing my second game as the Iconians in Ultimate edition, and they start with their alignment firmly set on good. In my current game and previous game, despite having chosen only neutral and evil choices, when it came time to choose, the only free option was good. So despite two evil choices, and two neutral choices, the Iconian alignment had not changed at all f
Actually, the shipyard prevents you from putting a second Trade module on a hull. As for route value varying with freighter design, I doubt it. The only reason I have so many designs is due to needing longer range to get across the map, and then my experiment with armed merchants. Forgot to mention before, my armed freighters were built after I got to level 4 in Miniaturization tech, so I built them on Medium hulls. Thus they are more durable than a basic fre
It's okay. It turns out that once the trade route is set up, you no longer pay maintenance. So one can make armed merchants if one likes. However, I probably won't bother again. Edit: Also, once the trade route is established, you can't upgrade the freighter. So it is set in stone once the initial freighter arrives at the target world. So I now have three different types of merchantmen plying the starways: the generic one, a fast long-range
WIllythemailboy : Thanks. I also thought of another consideration regarding armed merchantmen: maintenance costs. I'll have to check on that when I get back to my machine since I did design the armed freighter last night and launched two of them. If I'm still paying for them now that the routes are set u

Aside from space and cost, is there something I am not aware of?
Size does matter. You can put more Laser Vs on a hull than you can Laser Is: that in of itself will boost damage.
3.
