For the single player campaign, let us unlock the improved AI pilots for our ships.
Onboard with you until here. Are you meaning something along the lines of 'beat the normal ai to unlock the next difficulty' or having some of our player-character ships be piloted by the ai? I like the first one but

Loot drops, rare items, and special bosses work for a game like Diablo. I don't think it would work out in a Star Control style game. I don't want to spend 4 hours grinding (RNGesus hates me) for the Hellbore Cannon of +4 tracking before I can take down Death 001 when/if he spawns.

I'm pretty sure that the delays in the death-march were revealed in dialog choices with the aliens. I could be wrong in that though. What's that? Time to replay SC2 to refresh my memory? If you insist.

It seems that you like one long run where you can explore every nook and cranny. For me its more like "Losing and starting over? Great, means I get

I can certainly understand the folks who are against a timer, especially a hard timer like FO. I thought the timer in SC2 was really forgiving and you could push it back with ingame action. I guess I never saw it as a problem. I ran into it once and to me it was just a reason to try again from a different angle.
The visual expectations of the original Star Control were developed to a much lower quality bar than what people expect today. There are outstanding images in Star Control that everyone remembers and there are areas that people quickly forget, and the solar system view is one of them . The most memorable thing about the solar system view in the original was that it was a rarity and special if you saw another ship flying around

I think you can get away with the characters being more cartoony because we have few preconceived notions about what aliens look like. We all have a rough idea what planets look like from space so those have to be less cartoonish to create a universe that we can believe we are a part of. As I said earlier though, I'll hold off any judgement about the concept art until we know the context.
I wonder if this would be a good segue to having multiple modes. IE Casual: No timed quests, less combat encounters, more peaceful encounters, less harsh planet environments. More resources from combat, cheaper parts, crew, fuel, etc etc. Standard: Some timed quests with verbose warnings, average combat encounters, standard planet environments. Standard resources and costs.<br

I disagree about the timed game issue. To me it added a sense of urgency, and made it seemed like the universe was living. The universe wasn't just sitting around waiting for me to save the day, things were happening. I'd miss that if it were missing.

My initial reaction is that I don't like these at all. After a little thought I've decided to hold off judgement until we know the context of these images. If this is what we see from the edge of a solar system I'll be disappointed. If this is what we see from in orbit of the planet, I can live with it.
