Yeah, with the exception of the first game or two I've played, Pirates have always been annoyances at worst, and free exp at best. Usually the latter in most cases. Their ships let you level up your cap ships nice and quick, especially once you mosey on over to their base and stomp a few new mudholes in them.
Man, whoever says Phase Gates suck have no idea what they're talking about. Why bother with a few Hangars that will get overrun anyway when you can warp fleets (even your main one) from all the way across the map? And then there is the Dark Armada that just comes spilling out of those things. Yeah. Phase Gates are awesome.

Hey, Could directions on how to slacken your NAT setting be posted? Knowing what is causing the problems is interesting, but I have no idea how to fix the problem since no directions were given besides hosting a dedicated server (from what I can tell). Thanks.
