If doing well in the game depends on luck, how is it that some players are always lucky no matter what they do? This game depends on luck about as much as poker. Winning at poker depends very much on luck. Lower PQ planets are actually really good in this game, because in DA the number of upgradeable tiles on them has greatly increased. Those class 1-4 planets are all gonna be class 16+. As fa

This game is really starting to grate on my nerves, and today I just wanted to smash it into 1,000 pieces. Nobody's fault but mine, I'm the stupid one here. You're all brilliant strategists and I'm just a wannabe whose brain cells have diminished over the years and now I can't even do simple tasks. Well, I started four games tonight, and a few hours into them I noticed that the only available planets to me were class 8 and below, and one class 9 planet that required Extreme Colonization. This is

When my girlfriend first moved in she was pretty timid about using my PC... how things have changed. She uninstalled one of her games that used the My Games folder (seems common) and so decided it wasn't needed anymore. I just assumed GalCiv II wouldn't run without it... actually I am not even sure what's in there. So the game will generate the My Games folder if it isn't there? What is saved in there?

The higher your tax rate the *more* of those shields go into military, social and research. Just try it on a mature world. Set tax rate to say 15%. Check the planet and note the number of shields in each production area. Now jack up taxes to 50%. You'll see a whole lot more shields in those production boxes and a ton more money rolling in to your budget. <IMG src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Wink.gif" onload=setImageSize_onLoad(650,this); align=a

I don't see how StarDock is much different from Steam. SDC is only needed to install or update the game. Aside from that, you never need to touch it or have it running. In fact, you could even uninstall it if you like once you have the game installed/updated, and the game will still be perfectly happy. True enough, but the idea is only slightly similar. Usually all one needs to do is download a patch and insta

How about a refund? How about fix the game? How about some actual customer SERVICE!!! What ever happened to that? I've felt like this before, not about StarDock, but... well, there's a few problems I have with the PC game industry. 1. Games are still treated like childrens' toys instead of "electronic entertainment". Though it is rated in a similar manner as media, it's rare that we get adult-oriented games. Well, we do, but it's usually violen

I don't see how StarDock is much different from Steam. I guess you don't really have to activate your game to play it, but what's the use of playing a really outdated version? Still, I've found Galatic Civilizations II - Gold Edition to be the least painful game to install and play. No disc required in the damn drive, that's always a plus. Some games (particularly DVD games) spin in my drive for close to five minutes before I can do anything. Some examples would be The Godfather, The Sims 2... a

It never entered my mind to use the StarDock program that came with the game to uninstall it, so I used Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs to uninstall StarDock Control Panel and Galactic Civilizations II - Gold Edition. I then used the search feature to find anything with StarDock in it to remove all folders having to do with the game (in Program Files, Documents and Settings, etc.). I think I pretty much cleaned it all out, except maybe the registry key, as all software adds one of those. <

I don't want anyone to appease me or "dumb down" the game. I might be able to win easier, but the victory would just be hollow. I hate the fact that so many games are being dumbed down these days to reach more people who are still unused to the hardships of hardcore gaming. I simply want to learn, no matter how long it takes. I wouldn't say these things are easy to figure out for everyone, that's assuming alot. Some people are just strategically minded. I suck at chess, for instance, be

Raising taxes till your citizens tear their hair out doesn't make any difference. Each planet has so many military, social and research depending on the buildings there, and it won't go above that limit. Unless I am missing something, I don't even see the point of not having 100% morale until your planet caps its population, unless you are flat broke and need money.

The ship in question was a colony ship. I noticed it when I clicked on a planet about 12 tiles away. After about 20 turns, I suddenly thought, "Why the hell don't I have a new planet yet?" I clicked on the planets/ships manager and found the colony ship still in the same stupid place (next to my home planet where I launched it from) with 2 turns left and not moving at all. This has happened on more than one occasion, so now I just have to move the ships manually, annoying as it may be. I guess t

Well I haven't given up yet, but I still have problems. I think it's pretty much the same problems I had in Civilization IV, except 10x worse. I don't remember, but didn't the tech tree in Civ IV tell you details about the new buildings? Or was that the Civilopedia. It's a shame there's not Galaxiopedia built in. Damn! Well, so far I have noticed a few things about the game that are throwing me off. Besides the ridiculous amount of micro-management... 1. The tech tree is friggi

It happened to me every time. So I have to come up with a new name each time? There is no warning saying to change the name. Hm, while I'm thinking about it... why do I have to start a game to design a ship? Would be nice to have the shipyard out of game... designing these things could take hours for me, and it stinks to have something like this happen. Well you say it should be there on reload? I hope so...

Well, tonight/last night (Who knows? How long have I been here? What's that awful pain in my stomach?!) I played the longest game I have yet to play, thus far. I had to quit, though, because I had to go somewhere. But there's a few things I noticed... I played as Altarians with 60% Economics, 40% Research (+20% from Technologists, 60%), 40% Morale. On a huge map with 5 random opponents with random intelligence. Abundant stars, planets, habitable planets, anomalies, astroid fields, norma

Hm, so today I was playing as Altarians, and decided to try my hand at designing ships. Rather than use a core design, I jumped in and made my own colony ship. It wasn't all complex or anything, just the big cargo hull and a few pieces of "jewelry". I decided not to add any modules yet, I just wanted a shape. So I saved it as "Colony Transport" and gave it a description, and I was happy with it. I saved it as a Template only. Later I decided to Upgrade it (there's no option to "Use" a u

Galactic Civilization II: Gold Edition I noticed this today when I tried to set a course for a colony ship by clicking on a far away planet. Every turn, the ship simply sat there, wasting its moves (3/3, two ion engines). I kept waiting to get a new planet but the dumb thing just sat there, even with a visible trail to its destination. However, opening up the ship list and double clicking on it made it move. I had to do this every turn to get it to continue on its course to the planet.<

I bought Civilizations IV a while back and had a really hard time with it. It was my first "real" PC strategy game, and I got my butt kicked quite a bit. It took me a long time, but I finally won a victory. A Space Race victory, and that's only because I played on a Continents map and all the opponents were on different islands (thus, I had no direct competition for land). It's the only victory I was able to manage, and only on a Continents map. Lately there has been (in my opinion) a s

I bought this game last Wednesday and have been playing every night since, and I can say that I've never seen any bonus tiles on any planets other than the home world. Last night I had 12 planets and only the home world had special tiles on it.

Buh? The built-in races are pretty much unbalanced against one another as it is. Take, for instance, The Yor. Take a look at all those bonuses. And that's without the extra +10 points! How's a custom race supposed to compete? And you're saying the AI is stupid? I do not think so. I think it's unfair that custom races should be so crippled. It's like a punishment for not choosing a race the developers came up with and designed.

13 Replies 5,713 Views

Sure, you get 15 points instead of 10, but you have no inherent racial bonuses. One idea would be to earn more points (up to a max of say, 20 or 25) by winning games... just an idea. Here's one part in the manual I just don't get... "Now, you might ask, "Why should you bother to use a built-in civilization when you could just create your own custom civilization?" The answer is that the included civilizations are stronger in certain areas than any custom civilization can be made

Normal difficulty with randomized intelligence with 5 random opponents. I don't really neglect my economy, I've gone so far as to specialize planets. But it doesn't matter when your planet has .5 billion citizens. And I've gone hours just to see a planet reach 1/2 of its potential. Just what the heck is going on with the slow population? P.S. I set my taxes to 45%, Production to 100%. Maybe this is the problem?
