Triumph Studios made a series called Age of Wonder. Its really the spiritual successor to MoM, and they did a good job of it.

I just recently downloaded the game and haven't had much time to play, but from what I've seen and what I've read the AI for Galactic Civilizations 2 is top notch! Seems like it'll keep getting better with patches too. I think this game is going to keep me busy for a loooooong time, especially if an AI mod SDK is made. You've won a new fan, Stardock.
