After installing 1.1 I found that on the research screen I can no longer look at the full tech tree. The background is there but nothing else; click on any of the buttons to hide/reveal techs and the screen scrolls but leads nowhere. Just wanted to know if anyone else had run into this before I send in a report. pnich

Re purchasing/deficit spending, this thread seems to indicate a split between those who purchase factories and/or other facilities and use them for faster colony ship production and those who simply purchase the colony ships outright. The end result is probably the same; with the first approach you get going a little later but end up producing more faster so you catch up there; with the second approach you are first off the mark but your later colony ship production may be a little slow. At a

I'm always playing on Gigantic, so I can be fairly sure there's no attack coming for a while. Still, the initial planet rush is crucial to setting up a perimeter and getting control of resources. Some various tactics I've read in posts: 1. send out several scouts as far as they'll go and send your colony ships as far as they'll go as well, so as to create the largest perimeter possible. Produce colony ships as quickly as possible while maintaining research and social construction.

Nice to see that the Altarians have only been unlucky in my games. To put an end to this thread, last night I started another game (again Tough, Gigantic, playing as the Terrans) and found myself next to the Yor almost immediately. Soon after the Arceans, Korx, and Thalans arrived to hem me in. Finally, who does appear but the Altarians, this time, according to the stats, the strongest of all the races. From all the comments above, however, I think I'll try at least a few games a

Now first I have to admit I've only played 8 games total now, and all on Gigantic galaxy. I've played on Beginner to Tough and in each game I've played the Altarians always end up getting their butts kicked. They don't seem to expand quickly and while they are nice and friendly this certainly does not help them when the Yor or the Drath or generally anybody else decides to attack. Their racial stats are not that bad; can they be so disadvantaged somehow on Gigantic? As well, I've

complete agreement - do NOT pay tribute; it only encourages aggression. I generally go for getting my research and economy up and running first so I often get tribute 'requests'. I refuse and then switch everything to military production; even early on in the game you can have a pile of small ships ready to go quite quickly. That dissuades any attack unless you're just simply outclassed in all respects, not just military. pnich of the hapless Terrans

Maybe I'm missing something, but is there some way to line up ship production on each planet? I like to have my transports escorted and thus generally build escort vessel-transport-transport-transport-escort, but I have to keep going back to each planet to twig the build order. Is there a queue that can be set up somehow? pnich of the hapless Terrans, beaten by the Snafi

There I was, cruising peacefully toward a tech victory, with the three remaining races all close or friendly toward me. Suddenly I get notice that someone from my race has assassinated the President of the Iconian Empire, and bang! I've now a war that, while it won't stop me from victory, requires that I take the time to wipe out the Iconians before taking that tech victory. The paranoid question therefore: could this event have been set up to occur when one is cruising unoppose

Like many I specialize my planets - this one for production, this one for research, etc. My current game has a PQ7 planet with two tiles at 300% farming bonuses. I could build something else on these tiles, but I'm curious if there's any way to 'grow' population and move it to other planets? pnich of the hapless Terrans

Anyone run across this? - Under 1.1 I find I can't buy myself a mining starbase regardless of what I offer the other power. No matter, but when I contact minor races, where a list of their stuff should be (ships, starbases, etc) there is only the scrollbar (functional) and nothing else. Yet the minor races do have plenty of stuff - it's just not showing up on the dialogue screen for some reason. pnich of the hapless Terrans

Is there any way to measure, on a per starbase level, the economic benefit one is derving from them? Say I ramp up an economic starbase as far as I can and it sits across various trade routes (not just mine) - how can I determine how much that particular starbase is contributing to my income? In other words, I'd like to put a value on each base so as to see how strongly I should be defending them. pnich of the hapless Terrans

Yes Supergeek got it right - I've no problem getting races to surrender to me earlier in the game; it's that last surviving race that proves problematic. They're the only other race left, so perhaps that's why they keep fighting. Still, I'll see what happens when they've zero ships left. pnich of the hapless Terrans, conquerers of the Snafi

To gain a conquest victory has anyone had the AI surrender? I'm currently marching from planet to planet wiping out Drengin and, even though my forces are 10X theirs, better tech, etc, the guy just won't surrender. Fighting to the death? I don't care all that much, it'll just take 40 or so turns at least to take every single planet. I could very well research a technological victory in that time. pnich of the hapless Terrans, conquerers of the Snafi

8 Replies 6,028 Views

In my limited experience the AI simply looks at what you have and builds to counter it. In a recent campaign against the Drengin I'd put a lot of research into beam weapons and when the first battle came about - surprise! - the Drengin ships were almost entirely missile-equipped with shields. Your options are easy - click over the map and see what the enemy are using and then either build ships to counter as quickly as possible or, as I prefer to do, re-design a class of ships (say, using m

"A ship in orbit of a planet has double the normal rate of repair." Right then, but does the planet have to have a starport? And on an unrelated question, how can one measure the experience level of each ship - it apparently builds over time / battles. pnich of the hapless Terrans, conquerers of the Snafi.

Maybe I'm missing something but when a ship or starbase gets damaged repairs take a loooong time, even if parked near my starbases or my own planets - am I missing some ways to speed up repairs - some magic tech?

10 Replies 7,030 Views

I'm one of those players who takes 1-3 planets and fills them with manufacturing so those few planets churn out constructors or warships or transports quickly and as required. My problem is that I cannot easily automate the re-location of these ships. For example, when building a SB I prefer to have 6-7 constructors arrive more or less at the same time so as to have a fully defensible SB up and running quickly. As far as I can tell, for each constr

The AI gives you stuff? I've managed to get my relations with several powers up to 'close' but never get anything beyond small cash handouts of 100bc at a time.

Playing on 'normal' in gigantic galaxy; got myself boxed into a corner (still with about 20 planets colonized) by the Iconians and the Drath. Put my focus on R&D and trade to research and buy my survival. Managed to survive for quite a while, but after the Iconians wiped out the Drath I knew the game was up. I'd built a whack of mid-size ships a lot earlier on so as to convince the Iconians that I wasn't that weak, but now they were coming at me with 7X the ships and a tech level not so far

thanks for the input - it must be population then, as I've finished researching the influence tech stream and have the restaurant of eternity already. Both my border planets have 5B population so maybe that's the problem.

I'm playing at 'normal' level as the Terrans (my third game) and have run into the Iconians - being a nice fellow with no desire for war I chose to try and use influence to win their border planets over. In two places we shared a system and there I laid down three influence starbases each, fully loaded with 200+ influence points. On each world I put two embassies. Yet still their influence zone is expanding and it's my planets who are in danger of d

Just started playing the game last week - loads of fun, but also loads of questions. Regarding the use of Economic Starbases and the benefit gained from trade routes passing within the Starbase's zone, is it cumulative? In other words, if I've 5 trade routes from Earth to other plants, how can I maximize the revenue? Could I have a string of Starbases along the routes, all creating additional income? Never mind - just read some previous post re Starbases - much clea
