About the engine nerf : I'm mostly playing on large and smaller maps, but it seems the only one one who complains about the engines are those playing on larger maps. I find the actual values correct, as they make for a strategic decision. We need to chose between more weapons or engines, while in DL putting a lot of engines was a no-brainer. My suggestion : Do exactly like for range, and make the engines scale with the map size. This way those who play gigantic (or the even larger plann

Idem for me, and I also get the same crash when loading an old game. It worked fine with the last beta. I tried desactivating both mixed vp processing and the advanced ship handler (not sure if that's the name of this option), but it didn't help any. It appears that those of you with the slowdown when ships are on screen may be caused because your cards are running in what is called software vertex processing mode, which means that DirectX is having to emulate functionality that the driver should be handling, but is not. Some of you may be able to force the game to run in hardware vertex processing mode by following these instructions: Yay, it worked!

What you have to bear in mind is that as the weapons become more potent, they have that little bit more potential to roll higher than defence and cause some bleed-through hull-damage. Low-damage weapons are invariably going to be spent wearing down any defencces before doing damage. Yes, but at the same time the defense will be higher, what really count for how much damage will leak through the defense is ration between the individual weapon strength and

I finished my simulator, here is the code (C++) : /* Compare two methods to calculate the effect of off-type defense in Galciv II Dark Avatar. */ #include time.h #include stdlib.h #include math.h #include iostream /* Roll a value in [0,max]. */ int roll(int max) { // Note : I know this is using the low-order bytes, but the simulation is // not sensitive e

CodeCritter : That is what I took was your first try at fixing the "bug" (it is more a misfeature than a bug, but still), Frogboy comment made me think that you tried again. This is where I think that your solution fails: - Against only 1 type of weapon, X on-type defense is exactly equal to X^2 off-type defense (like in DL). Let take a totally unbalanced example (which will still happens, mostly with super dominator corvettes) : <b

I'm going to edit my original post too, but could those of you having issues with memory, slowdown or graphical glitches please try this build and let us know if it helps? http://sd.stardock.com/carielf/da_1_6_b5_test1.zip I tried with my existing game, and I still got the Governor screen freeze and the slowdown with large ship present. If you haven't already, please try starting a new game when usin

I got an idea on how to modify the way defense is accounted in combat that would solve the defense bug. Since I found the solution not totally trivial, I'm posting it in case CodeCritter hadn't got the same idea already. The goals of my solution are : - Against only 1 type of weapon, X on-type defense is exactly equal to X^2 off-type defense (like in DL). - Against 2 or 3 types of weapon, no defense has to be degraded twice. A consequence of that is with only one defense,

Ok, I sent an email with my savegame about the Governor screen freeze. I tested with a new game, and I had no freeze. (I just chose the Custom race without any ability, and guess what : I start next to a class 26, with a 300% food, 2 100% approval and a 100% manu bonuses. Arg)

About the old video card slow down : I got a situation with a fps ~20, with only one scout and some planets visible. But when I scrolled a little to include a Thalan Freighter (a normal one, not a miniature), the fps dropped to ~5.

Ok, I "updated" my video drivers (I grabbed the latest one for my video card, which was actually an earlier version than the one I had before,...). My framerate is still as bad (~4fps with 5/6 visible ships). When I went to the governor screen, it froze quite quickly. Also, the minimap on that screen was incomplete (it was only a little less than a 5x5, while the map was a medium). Very strange. My game is significantly slower now that I've installed beta 4. Given how old my video card is (Mobility Radeon 9000 64mb) it wasn't all that fast before, but now I'm getting I am in the same situation, the ga

I want to support the idea of removing stacking effect for starbases. That way they could be balanced both for those who build few (like me) and those who build 16 around their best planets. The only problem with this would be for influence starbases, but you could just put them stronger (but needing more constructors). While talking about removing stacking for starbases, why not making resources non-stackable too? So only your best morale starbase will have any effect... Then

I'm currently playing my first game with tech-trading enabled in a long time. The AI never sent me any acceptable trade. They kept insisting in wanting to trade my Alliance against their Missile weapon theory... And this isn't limited to tech trading, since I never got offered a treaty or an alliance (in all the games I played), even though I see the AI trading it to another AI. So I'm pretty sure that the AI treat the human player differently than the others AI. So my

Drengin Super Dominator - this ability is a waste of time and can slow down lower end machines. It will give the player a few attack 2 small hull ships based on your attack rating when you start a war. This happens even when someone declares war on you, or if you decalre war on them. With a decent weapons boost, the super dominator corvettes can go to attack 3 or 4, but they have a base stat of 2. And you have to pay upkeep for them. You can get hundreds of these for f

I would also suspect that the off-type defense is not working correctly too. In my last game, I had medium hulled ships (~10 attack, 15 missile defense) fight alone against fleet of 5 super dominator corvettes (2 mass driver attack). Since there was a lot of those fleets (maybe one hundred fleets) and I didn't had a lot of ships, I saw a lot of those battles. I won all of them, losing 2-3 hp per battle (losing only with almost dead ships). So, the Drengin had a total of 10 atta

Even though I had all trade route to the Yor, all treaties with them, and a 249% diplomacy bonus, I was still at friendly. Since I couldn't raise my relation anymore, I decided to attack the Korath, in the build up to the war, my military rating doubled, pushing it higher than the Yor rating. This pushed my relation to Close. So, my suggestion : Create a lot of ships.

At tiny and small there is now no point in ever talking about defense (a little sad). Even at medium, you would have to be facing a significantly inferior army of small/tiny ships for defense to become meaningful. Not true because 0-defense tiny ships will we destroyed in mass by any large attack ship. It is because each of them will be killed in 2-3 shots, so the big ship will kill a lot of them each turn. Now, if you add defense on them, the big sh
