To avoid the reload hiatus, I've been playing in windowed mode and just using alt-tab to get back to desktop and hibernating my computer when I'm ready to call it quits. You have to have another application running tho, I can't get the game to switch to desktop otherwise. Only time I reload now is when game crashes (not often now for me at least) or when I do something *really* stoopid. I do save the game before alt-tabbing, because there have been a couple times where the game crashed when

Had a CTD running Beta 3, I'm including my debug.err. I also have the CRA and DMP files. How do I send them? Attach to an e-mail? You can click and drag the slider back and forth, though there isnt much fine control. I usually drag the bar up till text goes red then carfully back down till it just goes green. Then up by increments of 10 using up arrows till it goes red, then back down by 1 at a time using left arrow till it goes green. I do miss the "what will you give me for this" and "what will it take for this" from Civ IV though.

Well that time it got to 40% before I lost connection, and I watched SDC timeout before I could get connection re-established and I finally realized how to deal with it. SDC default setting is 3 second between retries and only 5 or so retry attempts. I set it so there is 60 seconds between tries and 500 retries before SDC cancels. Went to sleep and it had lost connection at 24% but SDC was still trying to connect when I got back to computer and it d

Yeah waypoint could be useful for scouts too! Waypoints would be excellent for this, but I wish your ships had better AI as far as autoexplore. It seeems like mine will target one small spot of unexplored space, spend a couple turns flying thru explored space to get there, then target another unexplo

The coolest thing about espionage in the Beta is being able to see where enemy ships are heading. Good to know that those massive Drengin fleets on your borders are just passing through on their way to hit the Torians. But wouldn't it be devious if the AI set them on targets as decoy then changed their orders right in the middle of your space! Thats what I would do if I were playing against a human. Also, are the AI's doing spy work too

more than one milion score by just pressing next turn several hundred times after they've practically won. Jeez and I was worried about cheesing my score by reloading after screwing something up T

But still my main gripe is that SDC wont look on my hard drive and see that all these files are already there. In options I have it checked to resume partially downloaded files and I have unchecked delete file on cancel. Is there some other option I'm missing. I didnt have those set first couple times then I I found them and set them but it still wont pick up where it left off

Yeah I was just thinking about seeing if it would install, and just never trying to run it, just let SDC see that it was there. Worth a shot. Does the installer do a system check I wonder? Dont know where one of the install CD's is, but I guess I could just download it again. Unfortunately I only have internet access on nights I DJ and wont be doing that till weekend. Maybe this time the gods of dial up will let my connection stay up.... <br/

do you mean you can't download GC2 My laptop only has 16 meg video, I didnt even attempt to install Even if I did have it installed and it would run, I wouldn't be able to easily transfer the files. Just wish you could use SDC to download a ZIP or whatever so you could transfer it to ano

Ok its bad enough that I cant download the Beta 2 patch files on my laptop at work on high speed connection, even with SDC installed on it. SDC only lets you install the patch, not download and save. My laptop wont run GCII, and SDC wont even attempt to load the files on it. So I am forced to use my crappy dial up at home, meaning about a 4-5 hour download. Problem is I lose connection after only 20-40% done. When I restore connection, SDC wont re

Has anyone tried making a cargo hull warship and putting it in a fleet that is blockading a planet? It always seems like my ships HP goes up like mad after picking off all the single ships in orbit before orbital fleet managers are made. Do the cargo hulls gain HP with experience? If so, they could be useful once they got a few bonus HP

EDIT sorry double post Just wondering the best strategy for maximizing score. Would I get a better score by ending the game at 1st opportunity for an alliance/influence victory? Or would I score more by keeping the game going by declaring war and conquering the civs that I could ally with? Does the score go down the longer it takes to win, or does it go up over time as more techs are researched?

One time I kept reloading a save game. The 1st time through one of the races had surrendered to another. The second time they surrender to someone else. When I replayed it a third time I got the surrender dialog again, and I was like yeah whatever. A few turns later I noticed I had inluence all the way on other side of galaxy. I zoomed in and lo and behold five new planets for me to use to open up a new front in the war I was in, one with 6-7 fac

I don't know if this has already been addressed, but if I have more navpoints set than will show up in one page of the ship and planet waypoint selection screen, the scroll arrows and drag button dont work and you can only see the first 5 or so waypoints. I did find later that I could use my mouse wheel to scroll through the list of waypoints, but not everyone has mousewheels....

Honestly, who even bothers to equip ships with survey modules? All the anomalies are gone by the time you can space the production capacity to equip ships with them. I usually get a couple of my early scouts upgraded to survey before all anomalies are gone. What is truly worthless though, is the Gala

Luckily I havent had any of these problems yet, but I did have a weird one the other day. I upgraded one of my ship classes and finally had the cash to upgrade my most experienced/highest HP small hull to the new 24 mass driver design. While it was upgrading, I fleeted it, unfleeted it, renamed it, saved loaded and who knows what else I did that could have screwed it up. Anyway after it finished upgrading, I was the unproud owner of a 60 HP medium h

The AI does look at ships in its space, at least transports. I was busy kicking Drengin butt yesterday, and had a transport left over after invading the last Drengin world to galactic south. I flew it to the other front in the west corner, but it had to cross Terran space, and it ended its turn near Earth, where I also had a major fleet nearby to take out a Drengin military mining base. I had never had problems with the Terrans, but they came to me

Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that the AI can build its own custom ships in response to what I throw at them, but..... Have you ever zoomed in close and looked at them? The ones I've seen have like 3 lasers on one wing, another sticking out by the cockpit, an engine on the end of the other wing... you get the picture. It would be better if the AI put components on symetrically. If the 1st laser goes on the left wing of fus

"It's not just that I get to make really cool stuff for a living. I mean, I get paid to make computer games for crying out loud." Couldn't resist replying to this. I have two jobs. At one I get paid to run class V whitewater (river guide). At the other I get paid to watch naked women (strip club bouncer/DJ) Can anybody top that? <img

I was seeing weird things happen last night while doing a lot of loading and saving. My treasury stayed at 200 or so credits for 5-6 turns in a row, with a surplus of over 2000 bc per turn. One time I ran treasury into the red and it wouldn't come up for 2-3 more turns. When I reloaded the previous save where I had over 3k bc, the negative ammount still showed up and stayed the same several turns. I had to restart the game before it would load a ga
