Solved my problem as far as I can tell. It turned out that it was the motherboard. It needed a BIOS update because the original board's BIOS conflicted with newer graphics cards and anything using 3D graphics effects. Okay, here's what happened: I got about 5 minutes into a game, and then it crashed and auto rebooted my system. Same problem I've been having, although I now have a totally new graphics card. Hi. More problems since my last post. The BSOD says "Machine Check Exception" and then my system reboots. I have Smart Exception installed and on, actually. It hasn't recorded anything so far. Okay, so even though I just had everything in the computer replaced, the game still crashes. Apparently, the techs found something wrong with that motherboard and also with the hard drive, so they replaced those and then swapped out everything else (memory, graphics card, etc.) just in case. Update: Okay, so the game worked without crashing for about 2 hours last night. I actually turned the game off. Also, when it crashed before, I didn't get the "Windows has experienced a serious error..." message. So, it seems things are sort of better. Not sure how stable the game ultimately is on the newly rebuilt system as I've played it twice and had it crash once. Will post an update later on.

I'll take a look at the power supply when I get my computer back from the store. Their techs are taking a look at it right now and are testing stuff. If the power supply specs are too low, I'll get a new one and change it out.

Hmm...I'm pretty sure I have 81.98 as the current set of drivers (6.14.0010.8198), but I'll check again. As for the power supply, could be. I guess I'll have to get someone to look at my system. Well, I DID turn off the auto-restart as mentioned above by Consumed Crustacean and when the game crashed it automatically rebooted anyway. Also, I never actually got a BSOD, as the system auto-rebooted without giving me any sort of detailed error message despite the fact that I specified it not auto restart. Okay, well, when the game is running, the temp is about 55-58C. I have no idea whether that's too high or not. I actually had new memory installed recently. Could that be part of the problem (i.e. the memory is bad)? Or, would the hardware problem more likely be with the video card itself? I'll also see if I can do anything about the drivers.

I've only been able to play for a limited amount of time before the game crashes on me (see my other posts), but after downloading the patch, I noticed that whenever I try to read the "tile description" on the planet view screen, the scroll buttons don't work and allow me to read the rest of the little message describing what the bonus does. Also, I downloaded patch 1.0X today. In the previous version, the little arrow buttons worked and I could read the whole tile desc message.

Hi SamadhiFive, I can't get the game to run for more than about 15 mins before it crashes and auto reboots my system, so I understand your frustration. However, I did notice that your drivers are really old (dated 9/27/2001 19:49:00). Have you tried getting updated drivers for your video card yet? GalCic2 apparently needs recent drivers to run. No guarantee that will work, but that's what I noticed about your system from reading the error log.

Given that the CTD (and related crashing issues) are likely caused by a graphics card overheating, has anyone bought a video card fan or other cooling device yet? If so, has it worked? Also, can anyone recommend any good fans or other cooling devices? None of the other systems I've owned have had any problems with overheating, so I'm not sure whether the type of cooling device, or brand, matters. Any advice is welcome.
