Well, to kick the proverbial hornets nest . . . I am a founder. I didn't have to pay for the expansion. Having played Mercenaries now for 47 hours I can say it's not only underwhelming, it's not something I would have paid for in the first place. I am still waiting on Stardock to deliver the complete experience promised with the original release. A triple-A price, for a game that looks like it was built for 2010. I haven

I wish I had read that article before. Frogboy is philosophically dead set against Tactical Combat. I had hoped in the 10+ years since that was written that he had evolved his thinking on this, but it's clear he hasn't. He enjoys playing spreadsheets. As do some
Now that it's pretty clear that snakey-snakey movement is here to stay, I am even more certain I want hexes gone. It's truly a step back. While there may be some absolute advantages to hexes, the zig-zag is just ugly. And I really can't imagine why I would, in 2014, play a space game that zig-zags. You build this great Starship Creator, with these amazing looking models, and then, when you send them out, they cannot go in a straight line!
We bidded on MOO when it was up for auction. We really wanted to create a true MOO2 sequel with crazy tactical battles. Alas. but GalCiv isn't about tactics. It's what you being with you that matters.
Interesting that you may say that, because Wargaming.net bought the rights to Masters of Orion back in July of 2013. So, it may be that a World of Tanks/Planes/Ships may be coming to
What you'll have here is if you have support ships in your fleet you'll be able to set up some battle options before the fleet battle begins. its hard to describe, it's a bit magic the gathering (select what you want to do at the start). but you won't be controlling the ships directly. The problem is that people would feel forced to micro manage their battles in order to get an optimal result.
<p
We're off topic here, but I will say that I am NOT in favor of a 3d map . . . yet. I am still in favor of a tactical battle mode, which would add a lot of depth to the game, and I'm in favor of it being optional.
I'm in favor of increasing stack size, if not unlimited, then some very high number. I'm not going to use the Spanish Armada metaphor. Instead, I'll use Wolf 389. Or how about the defense of Deep Space 9? Nearly every ship that could toss a photon torpedo was there, hundreds of vessels, not including fighters. And then the invasion of Cardassian space? How many vessels where there? Or . . . <
Optional please. I wondered what happened to my scout . . . ended up with the survey ship.
Oh, and since I'm on the subject of problems with MoO3, let me point out something else where MoO3 went wrong and our beloved GalCiv 3 is matching it: a more complicated and ultimately meaningless, Tech Tree. One of the biggest criticisms was . . . most of the techs merely added numbers and added complication, not fun. It was unclear what anything really did, or that there was a real purpose for the tech. In his March 21 notes found in the Founders Vault,
Tactical combat and 3D maps are desired by a very vocal minority. I'd hate to see GC turn into a completely different game. Which is what TC and 3D would do. There's a reason MoO3 is so hated. It was radically different than MoO2. I don't want that to happen to GC. I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I hate to brea
I simply do not understand the issues people have with tactical combat. It adds depth and fulfillment. On the Steam forums I have suggested and continue to suggest, that it Tactical Combat can be auto resolved, or minimally resolved, or played out, depending on the players needs at the time. So you never want to engage in tactical combat? Fine. Auto Resolve. Built a new class of vessel and want to see how she performs?&nb
Sigh. I was hoping that we'd move beyond the grognards of yesteryear and move into the 21st century. While this may not be a AAA+ funded game, one would think that we would see the money we're investing in it . . . better graphics, smooth animations, and most certainly NO SHIPS DOING THE SNAKY SNAKE DANCE! Hexes limit movement to six directions. Grids allow movement in all 8 cardinal directions. My other beef
Here we are in our third version of Galactic Civilizations. I figured maybe we could ditch grids completely. But they do have some use. Hexes, on the other hand, though having some use, create really silly situations that look down right stupid. For instance, my colony ship is moving to the southern end of the map. On a grid, in the previous games, the ship made a clean arc to the proper rank and then moved in a straight path to the destination.<
Yes, I do love the music . . . and I'm very fond of Mason Fisher, as I'm also a fan of the Age Of Wonders games and he's been a contributor to their music library as well. I think it would be cool if maybe Mason or Geoff Knorr would pop on here and give us a feel for what, if anything else, they have in store for Gal Civ 3. I'd be especially interested if Knorr made appearances in the Twin Cities, area as he has, in the past, done some composing here.
The Irony (TM) here, my friends, is that Impulse Driven was a creation of Brad Wardell and our good friends at Stardock! I'm glad Brad and the gang took advantage of the sale and have continued to create fabulous games . . . and they went back to running their own download service again. It's not the Stardock/Impulse of old, but it still works. Hmm. Maybe Stardock will once again branch out and sell the small indie type games w
Everyone here is busy considering gameplay . . . Since I'm late to that dance, and since I've got a fondness for the music of this game (now and in the past) I wanted to say a few words about what currently is in the game . . . what may be in the game . . . and what can we get into the game. I've been really taken with the new version of the Main Theme. A great piece, that at times borders on a masterwork! If this piece is a collaboration
This is for the best. Even more than Elemental, I want Gal Civ 3 to be the best EVOLVED and FUN Space Empire game to ever have been designed. Just based on some of the elements I've observed from playing I'm sort of scratching my head at some choices.
Dead Planets . . . I will admit (if it's not exactly against the rules) to liking the way that MOO II did it. Later in the game one could get the tech to allow you to create Artificial Planets and it used the dead/barren/gas giant worlds in a given colony's star system. Don't know if that would work here, but it is a precedent. But maybe we ought to go back to Gal Civ 2's approach. Instead of a dead planet, it ought to simply be
Grimm's Star For the Glory of the Grimmian Empire! All things, when compared to other things, ought to have a grimmanic esthetic. Grimmians are by definition THE people of the universe and not to have a Star named for the most Grimmesque of all peoples . . . Have a Grimm day! Tolan Grimm Grand High Poohbah, Grimmian Empire
If you use the Win95 version to boot, it will work . . . except you probably won't have sound. That's the issue I currently have. DOS Box will probably work, but again, you probably won't have sound as the original DOS game used the old 16 bit cards that are not in any way compatible with what we have now. Which is too bad, because the background music is sooo classic.
Here's the issue at hand and the corresponding hole in the current system: This way, we could begin migrating back to the original concept tha tyou can build multiple buildings in a given city as long as you have the resource (available citizens) to make use of it. This encourages fewer cities and makes players choose between using their population for building their economy or putting them in arms. [/q
Quoting Tolan_Grimm, reply 57 I'm glad I've got Windows XP on a dual boot here, cause if it's TBS Fantasy loving I need, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is all I'm left with. And hey, right out of the box? No CTDs, a WORKING Random map generator, and tons of factions that are fun to play. Things I expected Stardock to improve upon. AND a global mana pool.
THIS is why one NEVER starts shooting a movie without a complete script . . . the story becomes a hodge-podge of ideas that don't translate into a single, unified whole. Elemental is like a small budget Hollywood picture that wants to be a summer blockbuster . . . but without a complete script, actors, and a director that has a compelling vision. Global Mana Pool? That's sooooo much crap, I think I need to call in Triumph, the Comic Insult D
This is insane. I'm fighting the Capitar Sovereign and my Morale, at the start of the fight, even with a CR advantage of 20 points, is near zero . . . Even after the very first attack I make, which, between two giants, 2 archers and my King's magic attacks, has slaughtered all but 2 units and a Stone Giant, my morale drops to zero and on the Capitar's opening move, all my troops PANIC. The Two units, the king's daughter, a soldier and the Giant, proceed to rip my army to shreds.&n
