well, for starters what I like to do is the tried and true colony rush. Now this may pose as a bit of an economic hurdle, but with a little luck you'll do ok. I might build some factories on the first two plantes, but everything else I colonise is starport only (and they build, that's right, more colony ships.) Once I've researched the first economic tech, I make sure to build the econ structure on all of those planets. Generally it's an apporx 10% gain, but it helps. The second struct

My development plan follows the OPs...Class 9/10/11 planets usually get built up in this order: 3 Factories, Starport, Lab, Econ, Farm, Entertainment, Emb...if they have bonus tiles, then I buld accordingly. Class 12+, I will generally follow the same build order but then specialise using the tiles that were left over. Under class 9 planets will usually get one less factory, or no farm...depends on their location and what resourc

I think the only difference between the major races and the minor races is the ability to colonise/occupy other planets on their own. Make a custom race and consider yourself a "minor" ...same sorta thing in my mind. The ability to set the frequency of bonus tiles and random events is something I would like to see as well...

One other tip is to to pick the highest morale and economics abilities before you even start your game. They can help keep you out of the hole, while at the same time giving you the opportunity to try out various economic models....

They are completely random - both in frequency and placement - one of the best features of the game IMO.

You can trade or buy other races' Influence Points that will then be used for the next UP vote...can be very handy sometimes.
