I've been trying out the various different races, and I'm playing as the Krynn right now. By their description, I figured I should shoot for a Cultural victory. During customization, I took the extra 30% Influence bonus, and chose the Pacifists as my political party. I researched the Influence techs first. So far, I have to say that this has turned out to be a much different game than the old build-a-bunch-of-ships-and-invade strategy. I've taken over about 2 dozen planets, an

So, I upgrade a bunch of ships, and my treasury goes below -500. I get a message that says that I have to suspend all spending and production until my debt is back above -500. This is total BS. Have any of the game developers ever even heard of the United States of America? We're running the biggest deficits ever dreamed, and we're still spending like crazy! I know deficits are bad, but I've got to get my economy stimulated somehow. I created millions of jobs for those
Of course, the AI LOVES to upgrade all their ships no matter where they are. I often see AI upgrades that take over 150 turns to complete. Even if you are at war with them, they will upgrade their ships right next to your fleet, and you can wipe them out with ease. I don't understand why the AI would be allowed to do something so ridiculous all the time like that, because whatever they upgraded it to is going to be obselete 150 turns later.<br

With their alternate techs and their luck bonuses, they can cause lots of pain.
The Altarians' offense can end up being formidable. I was trying to play them peacefully, and got attacked by the Drengin, and then the Yor followed. I convinced the Dratha and Terrans to help against the Drengin, but then the Dratha inexplicably dec

I thought that the game randomly assigned names to stars out of the pool of names in STARS.txt, but it looks like it just starts from the beginning and works its way down. Is this right, or is it a coincidence? Is there an option to randomize the names?

After playing with the Altarians last night, I realized that not all tech trees are equal. With the bonuses to Weapons that are available, that initial -20% penalty doesn't seem so bad. I was also surprised to find that the Altarians can research some Luck bonuses. I already had 50% from customization and Universalists, so I think I've got 70% total now. I hope my enemies aren't wasting any money on defenses.

I wanted to compare the racial traits of the 12 Major Races. I used the per-point values for customizing traits to get an estimate of what each race's inherent abilities are worth in terms of customization points. It seems that there is a huge disparity between the races. Is this intentional? Do the races with lower values gain an advantage in terms of their tech trees or super abilities? Here is the data I used, sorted from greatest advantage to least, a range of over 25 customizatio
