I just recently found a very cool extension for FireFox. It's called IETab and it allows you to load an instance of IE inside a FireFox tab. Now, when you go to a site that says it requires IE, you can simply use this extension to load the site in FF. Here's some info from the Mozilla Extensions site:

IE Tab - an extension from Taiwan, features: Embedding Internet Explorer in tabs of Mozilla/Firefox. If you need some instructions. Please visit our official website on http://ietab.mozdev.org

This is a great tool for web developers, since you can easily see how your webpage displayed in IE with just one click and then switch back to Firefox.

Yes, IETab is quite handy when checking compatibility.

If you design web pages I must recommend
the Web Developer extension.

It's the hands down most useful extension
I've ever come across when it comes to
construct web pages.

Now that is very interesting. With that I can visit IE only sites without having to start a new browser.

Except windows update! When I tried it it still detected that I was not using IE (probably because WU uses an ActiveX control).

Hmmm.. I'm running IETab 1.0.6.4 and I get the following message when I open the link http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us in an IE tab:

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer Downloads website.

What method do you use to load the page? IETab really needs to be in the 'Open New Tab' list also.

i tried your link, opening it in an IE TAB and it worked, asking me whether i wanted express or custom updates...i have the same version, 1.0.6.4, as you....originally i had gone to microsoft.com, then rightclick on the windows update link to open that link in an IE TAB, and bingo

i have a feeling that the first time i visited the update site, in an IE TAB, it asked me to download a 'windows verification program' or something like that, which i did, then it worked no problems..

i had just finsihed a complete re-install of XP, loaded up firefox (there is a prog called MozBackup that backs up all your settings, passwords, cookies, extensions etc etc for firefox and thunderbird..you can then do a completely clean install and restore all your settings/extensions/etc at the click of your mouse),and i got my XP updates..

do you have IE installed at all on your machine? the reason i ask is that i have been playing around with a windows installer called nlite, and you can choose to completely remove IE from the OS on install....if you do this, it is not possible to use the IE TAB...when i installed with nlite, i left the IE CORE in place, with activeX, so that i could keep the updates running

Yeah, I've got that as WinUpdate has been itself updating (only in the real IE tho')

As you may have guessed, from above, yes I do So far it's the only way I can get to WinUpdate.

Might try visiting MS.com (top level) & see if it works better from there. If not, I'm not that worried about it. For the sake of checking for updates once a week or so I can live with using IE.
