Hi everyone
This is the first discussion we've had with regards to the group assignment.
We've agreed to divide up the readings as the following:
Chapter 2 - Nicole and Jaya
6 - Jaya and Yaz
7 - See See and Chee Beng
8 - Yaz and See See
12 - Chee Beng and Nicole
10 - KIV (if we decide to do Q. 3)
In our discussion, this is what we have come up with:
1. What is the focus of the Teacher's Incentive Programme?
a) to arouse interest ?
promote reading skills?
c) focus on volume of books read?
- in this case some of us agree that her focus was on volume rather than on the reading process.
Kim, e.g. was involved in the reading process, she did not react to the incentive prog initially. Why?
- The teacher could focus on inculcating interest in reading by having:
a) sharing sessions
recommending good books to read to their peers
2. Where do the kid's motivation come from?
a) presents?
Teacher's appraisal?
3. The programme did not address the diversity of student's learning abilities
- perhaps differential rewards can be given based on their ability?
- Kim's progress for eg might demoralise those who are slower to catch up in reading so it would not be fair to simply reward everyone in the same way, no especially when the student is already an active learner.
4. Why did Kim stop reading?
Possible answers:
- developed another interest
- no more incentive for her to read more, the incentive prog may be curbed her reading process instead of inculcating it
That's about it from the meeting. Do put in your thoughts and ideas as you go along in the reading of the articles. We can keep up an online dialogue here.
Regards
Jaya
