Avatars

A few people have figured out that you can go to www.wincustomize.com and create an avatar that will show up on this site.  It is actually a code bug that the programmers have left.  If it is abused, it will go away, however.

With that, I need to remind people that you are actually uploading to wincustomize.  With that, you are doing so under the terms of Wincustomize.  One of the terms of use states: "(a) upload, post or otherwise transmit any Content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortuous, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, pornographic, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;".  It also states: "Stardock and its designees shall have the right to remove any Content that violates the TOS or is otherwise objectionable."

Avatars are moderated by Wincustomize.  If you use an avatar that could be considered "hateful", Wincustomize moderators and admins have the right to request its removal or remove it.  If you abuse the avatars, you will be banned from Wincustomize and will no longer have access to it.  Wincustomize has high standard of conduct (much higher than JU), so please keep that in mind when uploading an avatar.

Thanks for the Tip!

So many of those things are subjective though...for instance, the current flap over one JUsers use of the Confederate Flag. A few find that racially hateful--does that mean it's not an acceptable choice?

Ultimately, it will be a moderator/admin call.  This post is more of a warning that the avatars will be subjected to WC standards as they are actually coming from that site.  If you want to use an avatar, you have to play by the rules of WC.  On WC, we keep a fairly high standard of conduct, and it is a "family" site.  I just don't want anyone wining about "free speech" if they get their avatar pulled.

When your right your right, the files are on a stardock server, and therefore bound by any and all rules/regulations/random impulses that stardock (and their employees) see fit to act upon. That your nice enough to let us play here for free says alot, go you and such. But when your wrong your wrong, it's icon, not avatar.
Avatars are fill ins for you. Think of your character in a game for example (or in Ultima you were even named Avatar). They are not in fact you, but they might as well be as far as things are concerned. But an icon is a pretty little picture. It might look like someone, it might represent them in certain situations, but it isn't them and it's only purpose is to be a pretty picture.
Ok, that's enough taunting of the scary admin for today

But when your wrong your wrong, it's icon, not avatar.

As I explained to poor misguided Danny on IRC, an Avatar is defined in technical terms as: "Among people working on virtual reality and cyberspace interfaces, an avatar is an icon or representation of a user in a shared virtual reality."  So, the "icon" that people use to represent themselves is an "avatar".

I will spare you the wrath of Karma this time...........

Moderateman: Find a picture/graphic you want to use (can't be bigger then 50x50, use some of the others seen in the forums for examples). Then go to wincustomize and the my account tab for the update images section (or use this link, which won't look right in the forum, where the icons are visible, go figure). Once there note the personal icon section, click browse and find the file on your computer. The directy/file name will then fill the box. Click upload at the bottom and you should be all set.

gifs wont work, but I wish they would

We don't allow gifs because we don't allow animations.  It's not possible to identify an animated gif from a static gif, so we only allow jpegs

Im sure theres a way to change a gif to a jpeg, but im graphically challenged.

There is. Open it with Microsoft Paint, and then do a Save as. One of the choices is JPG.

You can try that. What's the worse that can happen, it doesn't work and you try again?

That would be easy if I had Microsoft Paint. Can I just change the file extension?

if you have Windows, circa 98 or later, you have Paint.

But no, on your question. Check out Accessories. Every version of Windows since 98 (might be 95) has paint. it is in the Accessories menu.

Hey!  You don't have to be that old to remember 3.1!  My first PC had 3.1 on it, and I was only 19 or 20 (ran a DOS shell because all my games were dos, though).  Man....I guess that was a long time ago.....

It was only 10 years ago, but not many people will admit using Windows 3.1x (I actually used windows 2.x!  Yuuuuccckkk!)

It was only 10 years ago

3.1 was actually released in 1992, so it was technically 13 years ago (which is why I knew I had to be 19 or 20 when I first got it since it was new at the time).  It's amazing how far technology has come in that 13 years.

I Meant until it was superceded.  Which was not until Aug 95, so that was still  10 years ago (and even after then it was still in use).

That's okay. I've used just about every incarnation of Windows including 3.11 and NT. With the exception of ME and XP. Right now I'm on 2000 Professional.

ME is an abomination!  XP is damn good!  I would upgrade if I was you.  I got 98, XP and 2K Professional running on my computers.  The 98 for customer support, but the 2K and XP are the mainstays.

The earliest version of NT I used was 3.5.  I did not touch it before then as it was trash as well.
