Windows v. Mac = Conservative v. Liberal

Over on an article by JesseJ, I dared say the Macintosh was better at something than Windows was. It's a good thing I remembered to slip on my asbestos long-johns this morning. Get this highly literate response from one of the WinHeads:

"Your entire post #35, has got to be the most ignorant and complete bunch of idiotic drivel that I have read in a long long time. I could make quite the page about it but why waste the space.
I wasn't even going to waste the time of day by posting in this ridiculous thread as a lot of it is plainly littered with typical MS slamming from a bunch of over egotistical, uninformed Mac users which really give Mac a bad name. However, some things are simply too stupid to let pass by without having to comment on that stupidity."


The funny thing is, I was being similarly flamed a couple of months ago on one of Brad's articles... by Apple Fanatics! Yes, I had dared to criticize Steve Jobs and Apple. Suddenly, I was the false prophet to Bill Gates' Antichrist.

It's the computer version of what Angloesque just blogged about. If you say anything remotely conservative twinged some foul-mouthed cretin with an I.Q. roughly equal his age will start blasting you as being some Jesus-Luvin', War-Making, Neo-Con, Redneck-Freak. Say something remotely sympathetic about the less fortunate (for example) and you'll be tarred and feathered as a Left-Leaning Liberal Loony.

If you think political forums are bad, try speaking honestly about computer OS's sometime.

People aren't reading the articles and comments. They're scanning them for a buzzword that will set them off. They can't respond reasonably because Reason's a town they long ago left in their rearview mirror.

Why have evidence when a chip on the shoulder and a ravening mouth will do?

I feel sorry for people so sold out to a cause that they have a hair trigger ready to blow-off the second their antennas brush something counter to their dogma. These type of people have very poor psychological boundaries. The product or philosophy they've decided to back has bled into their identity. The mere hint it isn't a perfect gift from God sent from on high for the betterment of all is taken as a personal affront against their own worth as individuals.

That's really sad.

I guess they think they are doing some good in a "shout them down" sort of way. Actually, they are just harming their own position. They think dropping ten tons of manure on an ounce of caviar proves manure is a superior delicacy.


I don't know about the manure, but I hope the Kool-Aid was yummy.

Hehe, there's a discussion you can't enter without getting silly comments, gotta love the internet There's not much you can do about it but shrug, it will always be like that, and not just on this subject but many more. Imo, it has something to do with what social group you want to be a part of, and then fight for it, trying to convince others that this is the only way to do this/that. You can't change a persons mind, once it's set

I think somewhere along the line tolerance became synonymous with approval. That's bad for both sides of an issue.

I like to think that those of us who straddle the gap (I use Mac, Windows, Linux and occassionally hard-core UNIX) as the truely enlightened ones. We're the ones that "get it", that no one platform is absolutely superior to another, that each has it's good points and bad points and they all fill a given role.

Here's how I use 'em:
PC for gaming/coding
Linux/UNIX for network & servers
Macs for ease of use.. and as a quasi-UNIX environment to do a bit of coding and experimenting.

I have to say I agree with you Nash, and most certainly Zoomba, everything has it's strong and weak points, or infact simply what works for the indiviual user using whatever it is at the time.. Some people are just single minded and lack the ability to see the pro's and cons, one or two little problems with something and it's "this thing is a piece of C***"

Also I think some people look for a cause, something to believe in, they feel it's their duty to speak up and defend whatever it is they are speaking out about. sometimes to the point of being asinine about it..Mac vs PC, AMD vs Pentium..Ford vs Chevy..the list goes on and on, as do the arguments, needless as they are.

It does get rather tiring to witness or participate in these types of converstaions, especially when the other part involved is close minded and passionate in their beliefs..

Anyway, theres my perception,

I thing you should use an OS based on what you want you computer to do for you. I use all three platforms for various tasks. (Win for work, web, & gaming, Mac for video editing, and Linux for running my network.) I think people by nature pick a favorite then get all caught up not liking the other platforms.

Back to the thread... I agree with #6. People tend to want to make there buying decision a purpose.

For me, I want to use a MAC for 2 reasons:
I am a technology Geek and I want to know how other OS's work and know how to run them
I am into design, publishing, and printing (and it is a indrustry standerd for such)

Their heads would explode. Anyways, I have to say that I can agree with all of you in a way. The dogmatic will remain loyal to their platform (no pun intended) and the open minded will judge for themselves. Even if they decide that one is better than the other, it is because they made the decision based on their findings.

I started out as one of the bull headed individuals being criticized. I was hard core Windows, if there is such a thing. A friend of mine held the opposite view. He jibed at windows with such phrases as "Bliss is ignorance". He even went as far as to post this scathing albeit humerous image on my desk.

Now, being in a high school, a run in with a Macintosh machine is likely if not inevitable. The environment is saturated with shiny plastic hip cases. We had some new eMacs with superdrives and the curiousity in me took hold. Expose, xGrid, Dashboard, and other features slowly eroded my opposition to Apple products.

Not that I am any sort of "Apple Whacko", but I can honestly say that I like certain aspects of Macs, and other aspects I dislike (cough cough everything os9 cough). I also like and dislike some of the foibles that are inherent in my Windows machine. I like to think of myself as among the enlightened elite.

As a Mac user, I have both praises and complaints for both the PC and the Mac. Although I do prefer the Mac, I do like PCs too, and I do see why somebody would prefer them.

There is an old idiom (at least I believe it is considered an 'idiom'):

"There is no accounting for taste".

Trying to force someone to have a specific viewpoint on a piece of art, a sunset, or an operating system seems a bit silly.

We all have to live with and use the system we choose, and we all have the right to use the one(s) that we like. I for one would love to know all the platforms, but I simply do not have the extra money to go around purchasing a bunch of machines to learn them.

I use a PC because that is what I have at the moment, and for which I have purchased software (not a modest sum for that, either). Taking personal offense to someones viewpoint on art, a sunset, or an operating system (as long as they are not forcing the issue on you) is silly.

I have to agree that the personal attack quoted in the opening statement seems out of order.

As long as we are enjoying ourselves, why bicker over which operating system the other guy is using or believes in?

Well I hate MS and Apple...Linux too (they continue or will continue to cost me money) but I really love my PC with XP Pro on it, the PC I'd dearly love to be able to run OS-X on ...and a Linux distro if I ever get around to it.


And when I get all three up and running, I'm gonna go out of my way to shoot 'em all down in flames when I see forum posts praising any of them....why should the zealots have all the fun of being obnoxious and get all the attention.

I'd suggest picking on NExt, but at this point that's kinda like picking on OS X's grandpa, isn't it?

The final conclusion has to be that whatever we are currently using is the most fantabulus technology ever, gives us a better sex life, the mate of our dreams, and cures cancer, while whatever that other guy is using is "just a toy."
