Bootscreen Help

I didnt know which catagory to put this under, because stardock support didnt have the bootskin section.

Hello, i made a bootscreen for my computer using photoshop, skinstudio, and applied it in bootskin (stardock). now for some reason, it works in the bootskin preview, but when i restart my pc it doesnt work and then i have to boot the pc in safe mode a fix it. let me tell you what i did and maybe someone knows what i did wrong. thanks!. first, i made the background. It is all gray, with a black BONES Skateboarding logo that i did some cool stuff to on it. so basically its all blacks and greys. and then i made just an all black progessbar, and saved them both as 16bit bitmaps. then i made a subdirectory in bootskin. then i opened my images in skinstudio and used the prepare for bootskin option/tool and saved them to the subdirectory i made. then i took one of the other existing bootskin.ini files that i had from downloading from this site, i believe it was the Trash_XP one, and replaced the variables with my information, and fixed the X/Y numbers and width of the progress bar so it looked right, and then i saved it as an .ini file. and then i tested it in the preview box and it worked! i was all happy, and then i restarted it, and it didnt work and i had to boot in safe mode just to get the pc started. does anyone know what i did wrong! help is GREATLY appreaciated. i want to get this one done so i can work on more, and submit them all to the site. im a beginner at this stuff, always used it, but just starting to make stuff myself. Thanks!

Hey there Richard, First I would like to say that bootscreens are pretty touchy, system wise, and I have had my own personal trials with them..Be careful, otherwise you may find yourself asking a whole bunch more questions upon recovering from a MAJOR bootscreen disaster..LoL

I also have never created one, but I do know there is certain criteria they have to meet, it may just be that you havent met all of the necessary criteria.

As far as I understand them to be, the bootscreen has to be created as..

1.A BMP file
2.640x480
3.4bit 16 color Data type

Im sure all of these things have got to be true for windows XP for your screen to work, if there are any other criteria, I am not aware of them..Hopefully one of the more experienced authors will jump in and tell us..

Anyway, check your file and be sure it meets all of those perameters..it's at least something to work with..Sorry I couldnt be of more help.

Good Luck,
Zero.

Thanks man, i got it working, but it just looks like crap. i guess practice makes perfect. whenever i move the coordinates of the progress bar, it seems to not work. so i just used a base image and edited it and kept the bar at the same coordinatites. im really new at this stuff and have always been interested in it. right now im just editing other peoples stuff to fit my computer, but dont worry im not stealing and uploading. i made two really cool bootscreens, and they both Semi-work. those i made myself. ill upload a wallpaper i made too. maybe ill get it right. Thanks! this site has been of MAJOR help to me.

Cool, Glad you got it working without any major issue's.. There is a place that has tutorials about creating them using different graffix proggies with settings you can adjust to get a better effect from the 4bit 16 color pallet, maybe it will help to make your creations look better..
Anyway, heres the link Link Just surf to the tutorial section using the buttons on the top bar..

Good Luck,
